  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDRAY Comments

Yes, that is a powerful distribution arm with the up-coming PS4 system.

Sony has many good thing going for them, but they have messed up a couple of times before, mostly due to arrogance...
Remember how they ditched mp3?
Or the Beta story?
Or BlueRay? (It isn't really an infinite success, and there are reasons for that...)

But they own a great catalogue and have the manpower to do things right (given that h.265 is any good....)

But the strategy of first making "mastered in 4k" blueray films, sounds a bit like the "same old, same old".

Should've done that from the start (on back-catalogue)
Bluerays suffer from often NOT looking better than well made DVD's... amongst other things.
So if they use "4k" to finally push well made BlueRays, that is probably not the wisest of choices...

RedRay/Odemax sounds like the way to go, but as long as playback is limited to the RedRay player, it can be a year or two late to reach mass-market.

But Jim/Jarred seems to have a good capacity at positioning. Expect the unexpected, and superior quality...
(let's just have that .RED encoder and someway to look at the files available soon'ish, and let the Indies start distributing over Odemax, kinda in "not so long time" and there will be a significant gravity towards that platform.

Right now I guess it is a race to get the "iPod" solution that works "right" out the door, and the winner will have a bright future... :)

That move is disappointing, i was expecting them to do put real 4k-material on some bds, like they did for that demo-disc/player for their 84"-4k-TV. They have the tech and the content, but nope, they've choosen to milk the bluray-cow longer.

"Look we finally make the great looking blurays that we have promised for years, forget what we said before, HD-masters are not enough to make good looking blurays". And then the statement about those 4k-mastered blurays being perfect for upscaling back to 4k, thats really funny.

This "mastered in 4k"-label makes even less sense than their similar "Superbit"-DVDs from the past. And the name adds some confusion to the game, probably intended. I guess we will have some slightly(?) specced down standard-releases from sony in the near future, to give their 4k-mastered re-releases more room.

DéjaVu? Reminds me of the discussions why HD isn't needed for home-use... Tables and math plays with screensizes and viewing distances, we had this all before. ;) Funny thing is, it always starts before most people had a chance to see it.

Come on, my 10" tablet has a higher resolution than FullHD, and i love it, my next phone will probably have a 5"-FullHD-screen too. Apples Retina stuff is beloved, no one arguments with "but you can't see a difference from that distance and angle"-graphs against it, no theory-talk there.

TV's get bigger and bigger, cheaper too, projectors are already mainstream. People who care will get a lot out of 4k.

It's a bit like those discussion about minimum viewing distances, it's stupid. Get the position thats comfortable for you, hell get as close as you want and can. It doesn't make sense to get a bigger screen and then increase the distance like it's recommended by too much people. I've had sales-man asking the question about my viewing distance, when i looked at their biggest screens in house too many times. ;)

Being close to 103"-plasma can be really fun, but it will make you cry for 4k. ;)

BTW, even if the resolution is too much for your eye, i think this is a good thing, because we start to "oversample" the eye.

I'd love to see the skeptics take a 1080 TV and a 4k TV and set the up in front of a scene being recorded live, or a recording playing on both devices of the scene directly behind it. then have both displays on a dolly so you can roll them out of the way revealing the real world scene. Not saying how drastic the difference would be I just highly doubt we are anywhere near replicating human vision in display technology no matter the size of screen or distance from it. Would love to be proven wrong would save me a lot of money, but form my eye's looking at images in the real world from real world distances in various different living room set ups, I'd say we still could use as much more clarity and colour fidelity as we can possible get.

OK - so WTF is going on with ODEMAX? I am a patient person but I think their promise of an announcement at Sundance deserves some acknowledgement. Even with the flu, some one person could post SOMETHING!!

I'm wondering the same thing. No changes to their website and nothing here...and nothing in cyberspace. Since the festival ends in a few days I would have thought the announcement would have already been made before everyone leaves.

And the skepticism often comes from the same old sources. LOL

:-)

Gunleik - you don't want to confuse impatience with skepticism!

Haha!

Does that make me a sceptic and you confused? :-)

I guess there is a reason Odemax was editied out of the thread title, after the initial enthusiasm.
I don't know what that reason is. And we'll either know when Sundance is over, or we won't.

Flu has rarely stopped business-wide important announcements. If that's what's needed, I guess Jim and Jarred are capable of a presentation if the Odemax guys are all ill.

So it is not sceptisism, or lack of enthusiasm.

Either something happened, so we won't hear from Sundance, or this is just one more of the very well directed drumrolls to make us hold our breath and smile with relief when it all pans out.

We'll know in a few days, and knowing RED... I'd not wanted to bet on either, as I find the one option as likely as the other... :-)

Like the concept a lot, though!

No - I am just impatient. LOL

Well, in my experience, while RED is often hard pressed to deliver product on time, they are actually pretty good at speaking up after they have promised to do so; even if it is just to say "we're not ready yet." I am only hoping they take the time to update us as promised. I don't expect delivery of product (Player, Projector, Encoder, Odemax/CDN) until they are completely ready; just more information about Odemax.

Gunleik I don't know what you're smoking but I'm hardly a skeptical guy when it comes to things Red. I might even be called a Fan Guy (my boyish days are long behind me).

Now if it were the Winnipeg Jets it would be a different story! Love the team, just destined to be bottom feeders for a few years.
