  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDRAY Comments

Thank you Phil.

I guess two ASICs in one box for $1400 is too much to ask.

We should get RED-user version of this box for double the price.
I am getting tired with current portable RED Rocket solution.

Need something quick to connect, simple and small.
 
Without dedicated hardware Netflix has no chance to deliver decent quality 4K.

Maybe Apple TV box 4K could be designed to do it but not Netflix.
Or another 2 years till PS4 (4K) will be released.

Realtime streaming of H.265 is also few years away and prone to ISPs trying to get cut on profits.

Also it wasn't clear as to whether he was referrirng to the commercial Red projectors or the consumer version.

My gut feeling is that no consumer machine will ship this year.

The Redray player which they showed a line of happy technicians in multiple production mode hasn't started shipping yet either.

Odemax. Was supposed to make a spash at some manufacturer's etc booth complex somewhere at Sundfance, the location was published, now there is just silence on the Red site. Odemax was never really supposed to lauch until March anyway and I think Sundance was to just attract the eye of source producers. Be interesting if anything is announced tomorrow when Sundance starts.

this is all part and [arcel of Red. It eventually delivers good stuff at great prices but it does tend to self promote way way way in advance of delivery. Its something you just have to put up with and not base any firm plans on with a time line.

In a video interview, Ted said 4 to 6 months for the projector.

The REDRay Player will easily ship in 2013.

Odemax was, indeed, not scheduled to launch until March - no news there. But was to be introduced at Sundance. Sundance isn't over yet and rumors, as cited above, are that the small Odemax team is struggling with the flu.

No news here. Just some typical bad-mouthing of RED.
 
I read, on the Sundance site, that the RED presentation was today Mon 21st. Doesn't mention ODEMAX, but I'm guessing it's a hot topic in today's presentation.

I wanted to attend this today but I couldn't find out anywhere whether I be able to get in to the event, does anyone out there know? I PM'd someone high up and involved in the presentation but got no response.
 
Mark, I would just go. These types of panels and presentations at Sundance are usually open to everyone. I'm sure you'll be able to get in if you show up.

Symptomatic when the threadtitle changed and a few other "will distribute 4k" options popped up, perhaps.

What was presented in this thread is the most "right for the pro market" thing I have seen thus far.

Sony are smart, because they can use the ps4 to propagate their solution like they did with blueray.
There will be a ton of F5/f55 out there to push material for that, IF they manage to deliver a useable workflow and distribution platform out the door.

Microsoft seems onto the same idea with the xbox, but lost the last round with hd dvd and don't have the content Sony can provide. They could of course partner with Canon...

The .red seems like the "pro" option and the infrastructure towards theatres seems like the right thing. Especially if it comes out well compared to dcp's, but there will be a few side-by-side tests to figure that part out. The rights management idea seems all in place too. Problem might be content if the studios bet on Sony/Microsoft.

I have been waiting for the redray to display the type of ideas presented here, and I hope they can get the full thing out the door in time to lead the party. If .red files can only be played back on redray and it isn't wavelet based, so that you could play back say a halfres from the computer (if the content provider would allow that, and I sure as hell would), it will probably have a harder time to propagate than the box/ps h.265 based solutions.

But fun part is that we won't know for a little while yet.

I was hoping to se the .red encoder before christmas so that I could start testing encoding, and maybe see if it accepted node based rendering, even if I had no way to look at the files...

I am to calibrate a few workflows (it seems) over the next few months, and would LOVE to incorporate .red for cinema in those, if given half a chance...

Yes, that is a powerful distribution arm with the up-coming PS4 system.
