  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDLINK APP now in ITUNES Store

so this app is only usable with the REDLINK module? since there is no way to plug in a cable into the ipad, wifi is the only way?
my problem is that the XL module has a fixed spot on my epic these days, so the REDLINK is out....

Paul, the camera can connect to your network using GIG-E - lemo cable then iPad can connect to the same network using wifi and control the camera without the REDLINK Bridge...

I'd be curious to first try the app out over a network. Is this the only 9-pin lemo to cat5 cable out there: http://www.red.com/store/products/lemo-to-cat5e-ethernet-cable-9 ?? I wasn't able to find a less expensive option...?

Then I only need a cable and an existing network or maybe an Apple Airport Extreme (which I have) to play with the app... rather than ordering the Bridge...

that seems a strange way to do things...i would prefer your app if the camera needs to be connected to a mac in the first place....

i am guessing the red mote is bluetooth? and i guess red does not want to make it obsolete? or is the bluetooth ipad-camera connection not possible?

or maybe a lemo- lightning adapter?

No, as long as your camera and your iPad are on the same network, you can connect. For example, you could use an ethernet cable to plug your camera into a router and have your iPad wirelessly connect to that same router. At that point you'd be able to connect to the camera and control it.

I've never been able to get the DHCP to populate with an IP address. Have talked to tech support for hours and still couldn't get anything. So I'm not able to tether via the gig-e cable and use the app via wifi then.

no need for a mac in the above setup as also described by Trevor : camera -> router (via lemo gig-e) iPad -> router (via wifi)

REDMOTE is not bluetooth... nor wifi.

lemo lighting adapter not sure at all but this should work with the RCP SDK... lighting to serial then make your own serial to lemo

so a portable (battery operated) router can be used with the lemo-ethernet cable on camera....
is there no way to make the apple bluetooth connection work?

In theory it should work but I haven't found yet a small, battery operator GIG-E portable wifi router (a 100/10 would not be recognized by the camera) .

seriously? what is it? REDWAVE?

It is called REDlink but it is different from the REDLINK BRIDGE module (wifi + RF) released at NAB... a bit confusing I agree

from the DSMC operational manual :
The REDMOTE may also be detached from the camera or rearmost module and provide wireless remote control of the camera over proprietary REDlinkTM protocol.

the more i think about this, the more annoyed i am getting, actually....you can get wifi n built into a SD card nowadays for 50$....i would be more then happy to pay an extra 500 to have it built into the camera body...there has got to be extra room for it in the camera?
the redlink is great and all but why do i have to choose between the only (really good) battery option (XL module) OR the redlink? what about a side redlink? just like the switchblade? the link blade?

remember REDLINK BRIDGE is sold as a development kit... hopefully the antennas will find their way into other kind of modules sooner or later.

I guess it probably was much faster (and cheaper) to produce those and release them quickly to the thirsty crowd in a REDMote form factor.

Make sure you are using a 1000 BASE-T switch or router. 100 BASE-T or 10 BASE-T are not supported by the camera. It needs to be GigE.

Thanks Matthew.... Going right into my 2013 Macbook Pro Retina VIA thunderbolt. Was told this should work, with in network configurations I see it is a 1000 Base-T, is it because I'm not running the Server Edition?

You need a DHCP server to be running (on your Macbook in this case) if you want to use DHCP on the camera. If you are connecting directly to your Macbook it is probably much easier to assign static IP address to both the camera and Macbook.

I don't believe the DHCP server is enabled out of the box on the Mac's. However, you should be able to set up a manual connection and have it work properly.

The other option is going through a router.

Andrew, to connect camera and computer directly using the cable and no router, you have to use manual IP addresses and not DHCP, check detailed setup here :

(BTW your camera will also need to be running beta FW 5.2.7 or above to connect to the iPad REDLINK app)

Has anyone tested range in ad-hoc mode? Considering wifi does pretty well through walls and stuff, I am hoping for 50-100ft of solid connection and 100 yards LOS.
