  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDcolor3 and REDgamma3...

Really great discussion here. Cannot wait for the new tools. Meanwhile, here is a frame grab with two color grade alternates, captured today, at Lake Las Vegas. To say I'm in love with this camera's capabilities would be an understatement. Working on RED removes every creative limiter I've ever run up against.

When you put it that way it seems to make a good deal of sense to me... Not sure why though...

Of course we haven't seen RC3 & RG3 yet, but it would seem they will change just that. Apparently, they are slated to provide a more saturated and contrasty base out of the box, though probably also providing as much/almost as much grading malleability..?

Well, we shall find out soon enough. One thing is certain: This is going to be a big step in the right direction. Wonder what Graeme will do next..??!? Starting to hit the ceiling... Probably work on ways to allocate the additional DR from DRagon so that it rolls highlights more than anything else?

Are we there yet? Can we see samples? :)

:) Great news that they are doing this. That is what I was posting to Jim before, the performance of what you get out of the chip should be maxing out by now, even in the first year, and sux months for each new chip. I suppose it is a learning curve for them as well. It is a shame when JVC released GY-HD10, they did not include capability like this with 10 bit for moderate improvements, that camera needed some help, especially with highlights.

The interesting thing, is that I have seen more colorful raw images from camera heads using 1/2.3inch micron sensors 8 years ago, that tanker example looks almost monochrome.

Rob, that is more like it, but I still see some issues camera side, but it is hard to tell on this portable screen. The untouched image has much more color, more what I would expect.

Sweet!

Got to say that working with these Gamma look applications provide a great view for the client as well as positive results for media capture on set as potential offline content and even online media on projects that don't require or have budget to inline with RAW media!

Clients have been amazed that this is just the low resolution footage and it looks pretty great without any one-lighting etc. Looking forward to Gamma3, and thanks for your continual support of this awesome product.

Below is a recent frame grab that I think shows off your EPIC-X sensor... amazing job in immense detail throughout the exposure range... maby 14 stops? I thought the sky's and range there was spectacular. Thanks for that! These are dumbed down for web.

Be Well,

OK, confession, you must have updated the retouched picture, or my color calibration must have been off when I was suck the other day, as now it looks more colorful.

You know it is amazing, but you can eat certain foods and the tint of various colors shifts in response. I'm sensitive to noticing it for some reason.

Any chance of this being release before the 20th of Feb Jarred? Would love to use it before a really big shoot starting 20th.

Is that true? Has this been proven?

I generally find that licking pennies before a shoot really brings me to the most "neutral" space/response of all the various substances I've tried for whatever reason. I just pop one in about an hour before the shoot for about a minute, hold it under the tongue. Something about zinc content I think. Lozenges work for some, but I find I need a bit more of a kick. We all differ a bit I suppose...

;D

EDIT: THIS IS A JOKE, DONT LICK PENNIES.

I wish that new REDcolor3 and REDgamma3 will get fix Bayer-pattern decoding that was not good enough in past or from a day one of RED ONE camera before.

With a great hope that RED has got involved the world's best engineers, scientists and programmers to finally get things done the right way.

Also I'm talking like this just because have to get Scarlet-X soon and before had RED ONE MX that means don't want to have repeating any of the issues from yesterday.

Sanjin, if it makes you feel better after shooting my last two projects on Epic and also working on quite a few Alexa shows in the interim I'm confident that even with the current color spaces that the Epic/Scarlet has the best color and skin tone rendition of any digital cinema camera. Of course it's also personal preference but I can't wait to see what these new options provide. BTW I feel the color and DR of the Epic/Scarlet are noticeably beyond the MX sensor Red Ones.

Evin,

I know well that Alexa still has a color issue especially with skin tones (good examples are Melancholia and Hugo).

Arri RAW could't help so much in that case because of its limits and I could bet that is more a kind of serious issue with the silicon vapor involved,...

And my wish is to easy mach a footage shot on three cameras like the Scarlet-X, Canon C300 (have both cameras on order) that will compensate lack of Dragon sensor for a low light

and upcoming Nikon D800 that will also compensate some of anamorphic shots like a specific close up shots of human faces.

All those three cameras together are still cheeper and a better deal than to owe Alexa or even Epic.

Btw, to me a slow motion starts with Phantom cameras speed of 1000+ fps.

Also to mention that I'm living in HDTV world at middle of Europe,....from here 4K looks more like a gaming weekend in Las Vegas with hangover,...

At the end shooting with those three cameras will look more like shooting a movie with three different film stocks.

That's interesting Evin. I assume you are comparing both transcoded via Redcolor 2 and Redgamma 2 (and not leaving it in 1 and 1, as they are the only "in camera" choices on red 1 MX)?

I am not sure what all that was about but I really like the current color and skin tones. I do think film still holds a small edge in color reproduction; but there are far too many advantages that go beyond budgetary concerns which make Digital (Epic) the only desirable format for me.

About slow motion, I know what you are saying SJ, but slow motion is anything beyond 24 frames and dictated by content and context. I do think the C300 is a fantastic camera for extreme low-light. That opening sequence in the clip you posted (shot under moonlight) is truly shocking.

Seeing in the dark is fun but does me no good if I can't do much with the image once it's recorded. No matter how you cut it 8bit 4:2:2 H264 is not an "A" camera originating format that can be manipulated to a requisite level for production quality.

Rob, yes for the most part 1 & 1 but even processing MX footage through my rocket with 2 & 2 you can see a difference in Epic material.
It's cleaner, smoother, more highlight retention (clips later) and the colors just seem more naturaly pleasing.
