  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

iPad

Personally, using something that's only connected to the camera via WiFi makes me nervous - as said before, it seems like for that being as close and connected to the lens as possible is ideal. Imagine blowing a shot because of lag time or a WiFi error.

However, using the iPad to add the look, edit the look, etc would really be awesome.

Focus is out of the question,

And I really hope a $30 Slate can keep its job, I wouldn't mind this as a TC music video playback tool, (But for god sakes please bring more than 5ft of cable to connect to the damn speaker)

Completely agree, I don't suggest WiFi. Apple is selling a ton of 30-pin dock adapters, and apps can be built to support other connection. What if RED (or a 3rd party) creates an adapter that goes from the camera to 30-pin, and then builds an application to support it, so that you can watch the Live Feed from the camera to the iPad just as you would on an LCD that RED sells? That's what I am hoping for.

anyone know how alex is geting the video feed from his dit cart to the iphone? Jaedu app?

He said in a post above that he's using 3cP (a great app for on set) and a VNC client on his iPhone to see 3cP running on his cart. I'm guessing he could run/stop video record on a SDI capture show, I'm going to try it out later today as its a great idea that i didn't think of using my iphone for before.

I think everyone missed the real possibility of using an iPad, RED Link.

I know not much has been said about it but from what I can gather it will be a wifi tool used for the DIT to change and check red settings remotely and on various cameras at one time. I can imagine being on set and adjusting the ISO, Color temp, audio input's and more all from this device. I can see it being an even more useful tool when on set with multiple red's and matching there settings and timecode sync and more.

That's where I see the real possibilities for the iPad on set.

Don't hold your breath - the SDK is horribly limited. Forget that iphones/ipads are visually sexy, they're not robust development platforms in the least.

The thing is you can do a lot of the stuff being talked about here without the SDK.

The DSMCs appear to be able to be controlled via the ip protocol; it they can host a HTML based control system then you would only need to connect to the camera on a local network. Heck, even if the control is USB only, a cheap netbook or linux stick pc (there is a name for these things) would do the job; just VNC into it.

What exactly do you not like about it? With POSIX threads, UNIX sockets, SQLLite, OpenGL ES, OpenAL audio, various media decoding frameworks, and then the whole Cocoa Touch framework (for the UI), it seems pretty robust to me.

Have you tried playing back H.264 video via the current SDK? You can:
1. play
2. make video full screen or not
2. turn on/off progress bar and ffwd / rewind / pause icons for the user

That's it. You can't even:
1. seek to a point in the video
2. pause the video
3. change audio streams
4. find out what frame the currently-playing video is on.
5. encode a series of frames to an H.264
6. do anything with OpenGL eg putting video on a texture

Kinda sucks! So no go on a video editing app for now, for one thing.

I started writing one app for the iPhone but moved to Android-only until Apple adds what's needed to the SDK. Android at least does #'s 1-4.

EDIT: And just to piss me off, Apple does make these API calls available to themselves for their own movie player (EG chapter selection, plus the movie player interface itself knows what frame the video is on so that it can update the status indicator).

the ipad wasnt designed to edit video, and its target isnt really for the techies. i wouldnt really dream of editing on a tablet anyways, low res screens (barely close to 720p), not enough power or space. seems like the wrong tool. i can see controling exposure, and capture settings would be a blast on the ipad though. keep in mind that this is just the first generation of it, so be patient and i think you'll see the ipad come into itself.

An iPad is probably faster than the early PCs, Macs and Amigas that I used to edit on. It'd be fine for editing storyboards. Heck, we still do our offlines for big studio movie trailers at SD anyway.

Also, have you ever used a Quantel Editbox or Harry? Gestural editing via tablet, quite nice in the late 80's, early 90's!

That said, I agree - buy something like an Atom or Core 2 Due based tablet for real video editing.

Anyway, my app was written more towards content playback. I didn't need anything fancy - just to be able to SEEK TO A SPECIFIC FRAME! EG what Apple does themselves in their own video player.

Agree with you there of course - and yes I am buying one.

it'd be useful for the scripty to get all the info from the camera instead of bothering AC's all the time, spose she/he could do a rough edit with some kinda proxy files too perhaps

I'm not familar with all the terms of the app store, but what's to stop you from statically linking to something like ffmpeg or a similar library?

I guess that would (probably?) not be hardware accelerated, which would be a problem on the iPhone but not so much on the iPad. And you'd be able to use many more codecs.

I am looking into that. For example, someone did a VLC port - available via Cydia. But it requires a jailbreak to install. Not exactly consumer-friendly!

I want to use the H264 decoder chip on the iPhone because playing back a full movie via software decode might well chew through battery life.

If I try to use any undocumented calls (like the ones Apple uses for their own movie playback software), Apple throws my app out, so I'm basically locked out.

Android's SDK came out after the iPhone's, yet their video playback is already better. Hope Apple fixes this by version 4.0!

REELDirector on the iPad anyone?

But obviously a much better version, batch dumping photos etc.

So take time lapses, dump them in REEL director, change all to 1sec, render out, save. Upload.

Just use a laptop and forget about the ipad.

The appeal of the iPad over a laptop would be to mount it to the RED itself. You couldn't mount a laptop. Essentially the iPad would be great to support because it would be a cheap LCD display for the RED that can do so much more. Essentially more bang for the buck. Please support it RED.

I think the problem is Apple doesn't see this as broken. They want users to use iTunes for audio and video playback. They do this same move by not allowing third party browsers.
