  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDCINE-X Build 326...

Hi!

Wondering if anyone has definitively figured out the black quicktimes issue yet.

I'm trying to render ProRes 422HQ and 4444 without a redrocket right now. tried the millions of colors setting and the non-gamma correct setting. Still getting black QT's.

It would be amazing to get this version working if it actually renders as fast as it seems to...albeit just not with black output :cheers2:

Ok. It seems that there's a little bug in Build 326... When exporting with Crop in Custom mode (a red rectangle over the image appears) the clips are upside down!

Anyone else with this?

Yes, the same here:
the clips are upside down after export
with 326 when exporting QT 1920x1080 Prores 16/9 (no cropping) ,
debayer nearest fit.

Also, something strange: I cannot uncheck :"Use rocket“ (grayed)
while there is no rocket in Mac

So I am back to 321 where there is not this issue

Does this version support audio over SDI? I only get audio playback on the computer no output over SDI.

I quite like how REDCINE-X is shaping up. It's still buggy as hell, and the interface still needs a bit of a polish, but I'm liking the direction it's heading. Keep up the good work guys.

Please verify that you DO NOT have flip set on your framing controls. This setting is pulled from the camera metadata. If flip is not set and it is still upside down please send a RCX log with verbose logging enabled of this to 'redcinex at red dot com'

You should not need to uncheck the "use rocket" box as it will not use it if it is not present. That simply means that the next time a rocket is connected it will use it.

Now I am at a point where I have 3 long clips in the timeline and I just can't find how to zoom out the timeline so I can see all the clips at once. I read the manual and no reference I could find. I cannot find a slider or zoom button like in AE or Final Cut.

There are multiple ways to do this.
1. Use your mouse wheel over the timeline to Zoom In our Out.
2. In the "View" menu at the top of the screen choose fit timeline to window.
3. Shift+Z

Thank you Matthew for your answer.
After a few attempts, we have now:

FLIP is and was never set in the framing control.

Issue (upside down) appears only when crop is set on "custom",
origin x=0, origin Y=0, W=4096,H=2304
source resolution: 4096x2304
This happens with build 326 or 321

When "No crop" is set on, no issue.
so it's rather a user'setting mistake and not a software bug,
please accept my apologies.

If I open a saved a project I get an empty project, there's no way I can store a project. For the rest great build, redlog film is beautiful. Thanks for the tip about using redspace as color space in conjuction with redlog film.

Thanks a lot Matthew,

That really helps. It was just hard to find out. For future versions I think it would be great to have at least an slider on the same timeline, same as the one for the thumbnails size. though I have to say that the mouse wheel is great!

I'm having the black ProRes issue as well, on ProRes Proxy or ProRes 4444, and it happens with REDCINE-X builds 326, 320, and even 261, and 261 and 320 both previously worked just fine.

I tried another computer and the same all black Quicktimes happen in REDCINE-X builds 194, 221, and 258, all of which worked a few weeks ago.

Now I'm really starting to freak out - I busted out a laptop that has not had any Apple software updates in a long time (there is a Pro Apps update that is available but not installed) and the same black Quicktimes problem with REDCINE-X build 252! I even tried the Animation codec in case it was just a ProRes problem, and that was all black as well.

So that's 3 different computers and 7 different versions of REDCINE-X, with different versions of Apple software updates, and different versions of the FCS studio installer. All 3 computers worked perfectly fine a couple of weeks ago. So what's going on? I'm royally screwed at this point.

Turn on verbose logging and send some RCX log files to Redcinex at red dot com and I can take a look at what is going on for you. Also if you can send your export preset that would be useful.

I'm now on a 4th computer, an iMac with no RED software previously installed. No FCS plugins. Just installed REDCINE-X 262, and... black Quicktimes.

I know it's not my footage being corrupt, because I'm trying to re-render footage that I rendered fine last week.

As others have reported, REDLine works just fine, other than the fact that it is not using my RMD settings.

Which gave me a thought... I deleted my RMD files, which had been updated in build 326, and started fresh in 262. Voila, problem solved!

So it seems that Build 326 is creating broken RMD files that lead to all-black Quicktime renders in that or any older build.

Will my verbose logs still be of help to you, Matthew?

Yes the logs may still be helpful. And if you can send me one of those bad RMD files that would be most useful. Thank you.

Have you checked the crop settings? I noticed build 326 add an unexpected custom crop to my footage that resulted in black output, I haven't had time in front of the machine to check what caused this, however clear the crop in the framing tool and all is well.

It's great to see the RED team jumping on this so quickly. Thanks Matthew and Gavin.

For anyone else experiencing this problem, my solution was that because I had saved all my looks to look presets, I trashed my RMD files, and used build 320 to re-apply my look presets, creating new RMD files. Then everything worked perfectly!

As soon as that render finished, I will check the framing tool as John had suggested, as that seems like a very probable explanation. However... I didn't think that framing tool settings were saved in the look presets, because there was no way to select or de-select them being applied in the look presets window.

EDIT: Yup, it was the framing tool. It was set to "Custom crop" for some reason. I've never touched that control, but somehow it got applied to all my clips via a look preset. I was unable to get rid of it through a look preset in build 326, even though that's seemingly how it got there. I could change a clip to "No crop" save a new look preset, and apply it to clips in a bin, and they all stayed at "Custom crop."

However, I was able to set the framing tool to "No crop," create a framing preset, and apply that to all my clips in a bin, which solved the problem. This is the easiest and fastest solution for anyone else experiencing the black quicktimes problem.

Now, for the folks at RED... I think there is something wrong with REDCINE-X 326. I was correcting a new batch of clips for the first time, creating RMD files for the first time, and I ended up with a framing preset applied to all of them. It could be user error, I suppose. But then I went back to an older project that had been corrected in build 320, already had RMD files, and I made a few adjustments to my levels, and those clips ended up having "Custom crop" set to them. I don't think it's just a coincidence, or user error, that several of use are all experiencing this; I think it is a software bug, somewhere somehow.

Yeah, it seems to be some kind of crop error. I was able to turn off the crop, and then I reset the prefs in general as it was doing some wonky things. The short test clip I rendered out seems to be working though. Now, if we can just get redline to apply the look settings I will be very happy because I can render quickly with the right look.

Matthew

I used the 32bit version for MAC and got corrupted videos once converted to Pro Res 444. Audio is fine though.
