  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED WEAPON - Info and Data Sheets

so just to be clear, this is absolutely an end to "obsolescence obsolete"

just to be clear.

i'm not a big guy with huge clients, but i've spent tens of thousands of dollars to be a part of the RED ecosystem, and i simply can't afford a dragon update this year.

so i've been abandoned.

not to be dramatic, but this makes me seriously look at other options. which means i'll be taking a hit to some degree, but i'm not particularly interested in supporting a company that wants to hold a gun to my head to upgrade.

i'm quite disappointed in this.

Upgrade paths ALWAYS have windows and time frames. Always. While you feel abandoned, I continue to feel gratitude for a company that doesn't make me buy a brand new camera every year. New camera required every time a tech leap happens... THAT is being abandoned. You have a window open to you, not a gun pointed at you. The production line can't stay open for you and one other owner indefinitely.

As technology improves at a rapid rate, Red allows me to PROGRESSIVELY improve with it. THAT is why I bought Red.

Dragon turns into Weapon

Dragon turns into Weapon

The “Dragon” is an evolution that has now about to be turned into a “Weapon”, much like a dragon when it grows up, it has to feared by the traditional thinkers, there is no stopping the “Red Digital Cinema Company”, and you can take that to the bank. Now or Latter!

Wise Words. There is no hurry to go from Dragon to Weapon, that's not what I am pushing here. It is a heads up for anyone still on MX to get to Dragon if they want to continue down our upgrade path.

Jarred,

Will Scarlet Dragon or Scarlet Weapon, ever be allowed to upgrade to Epic Dragon or Epic Weapon in the future?

Thanks for your time...

First, I think you are confused...this isn't the end of obsolescence obsolete...but rather the evolution.
but...what other options out there offer any type of upgrade path thats even remotely close to what Red offers?

I'm incredibly happy to hear the MX to Dragon upgrade has been reduced back down to $9500 for those of us that still need to do that. That makes things a hell of a lot easier for me.

Thank you RED! I wanted to upgrade last year but some things hit me in the face in my personal life. Now that I have it back on track, this happens. Things happen for a reason.

- It is possible to pay for the Dragon Upgrade and then pay-up to the Weapon Upgrade.
We actually don't know how cool is Weapon and what money for.
Does it mean it is possible to see the details and price about Weapon at NAB and then make decision about upgrade MX to Weapon somewhen in May-June?

At NAB 2015 we all will learn the full extent of Weapon. From there you will have until late June 2015 to upgrade to Dragon, which will allow you to upgrade to Weapon.

There is no "direct path" from Mysterium-X to Weapon. Weapon is a Dragon only upgrade and only Scarlet and Epic Dragon Brains are eligible.

Thanks Phil. I guess I didn't make it quite clear what I meant :) I already understood what it's about. i just noticed a lot of others who didn't and tried to explain it to some. But you of course have more "red street cred" ;). So it's good to have it with all the rest of the info in your first post. Thanks!

As more is revealed here and "abroad" I'll be paying very, very close attention. There's somebody out there who's already a chatty about Weapon. I have a very sincere feeling in a few days we'll hear a lot more details.

i'm quite glad there are those of you out there that look at this as a positive, and i'm prepared to accept that i'm not as much of a RED zealot as many, but this goes against obsolescence obsolete. entirely. the Epic MX will become exactly that. obsolete. am i missing something that indicates this is not the case?

and upgrade paths always have windows and timeframes? even when that's seemingly an arbitrary decision? the implication in this announcement is pretty clear to me:

"Upgrade to Dragon by summer or find yourself out of the loop."

it's really entirely impossible to continue an upgrade path for MX users? i just upgraded from scarlet to EPIC last year; i've officially had mine for less than a year. and now i'm essentially being threatened to upgrade or my investment ceases to have a future. that's kind of messed up to me.

"The production line can't stay open for you and one other user" - while i appreciate the jab, i would imagine i'm not the only person in this circumstance. not even one of only two. and i'm glad you're so flush with cash that this upgrade, while not being "forced" in your eyes, is a welcome opportunity, but it is very much, to me, a forced upgrade.

i'm $30,000 invested in this. as a one-man operation. and i'm being told that my investment is essentially end-of-life.

sorry if i seem unreasonable for being perturbed at that revelation.

Phil, the connectors in this image look a lot like the picture on the bottom right of your collage. Possibly the Weapon I/O module? If so, then it looks like they took the connectors from the bottom of the camera and made it a module, which is elegant.

Have to say I am a big fan of RED Design. Love my Epic Dragon form factor too much. Its completely indie friendly, jib, steadicam, movi- you name it- friendly. And it looks incredibly good, even after all these years. I hope the Weapon keeps the good looks and practicality of the Epic body!
