  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED WEAPON - Info and Data Sheets

Just to round up some of Jarred's thoughts here as they answer a few things being asked via PMs and emails.

Granted. Weapon brain is actually almost half an inch shorter than the Epic brain, and when you add the modules there is no adapter needed and things get much more compact ( the base IO for example only adds 3/8" of an inch to the body ) For super compact setups, where you may not even need the base IO, just the battery module, you can skip the IO module completely.

Long and the short of it, pun intended, Weapon is smaller. Some have asked if current base plates would be compatible, they are.

That is one thing we are carrying forward ( because we can ) ... There will be an adapter to make current LEMO monitoring/touchscreen options work with Weapon.

All current LCD Touch screens and BOMB EVFs will work with Weapon.

Yes and Yes... if you upgraded or upgrade your Epic M/X to Dragon before NAB you are eligible. Carbon Dragons get pole position just like last time.

Carbon Dragons are ahead of the pack in terms of the upgrade queue.

Of course we are... Epic Dragon and Scarlet Dragon will remain in the line for quite some time.

Epic Dragon and Scarlet Dragon aren't going away anytime soon. This also means that many of the modules and general accessories will be around for a while as well.

Yes you are good. No pressure.

This was in reference to "if I have to upgrade to Weapon from Dragon immediately". Nope. You'll have some time to do that. This is just the announcement leading up to the beginning of the Weapon upgrade.

There is more than one Weapon and there is a path for Scarlet (dragon) owners to go to Weapon.

Scarlet Dragon to "top" Weapon.

There will be more than one model of Weapon. It sounds like there is a path for Scarlet Dragon owners to go to the "top" Weapon, what "top" means I'm not clear on here, but I believe it means the "main" Weapon model. And Jarred has also mentioned the Carbon Weapon will have more capability as well, which is the premium option for sure.

My read is there are two Weapon materials Carbon + Aluminium.

The bolt-on modules will differentiate the Weapon functionality.

1st Priority of Cf_Weapon upgrades : CF_Dragons + Non_CF_Dragons_wishing_to_jump_to_CF

I missed the "CF Weapon will 'do more'" comment that Phil quoted earlier -> but this might be a 'burst of excitement. :D

Didn´t he also mention that "Carbon can do more" or something similar? Not sure where that quote was

People kept asking RED to unlock the Scarlet's potential to be an Epic. They thought the Scarlet was handicapped to not have it's full potential. Simply put, they just wanted all the functionality of an Epic but at a Scarlet price (which totally doesn't make sense other then them being greedy and claiming poor).

WEAPON should be the high end top of the line. Difference is physical (Carbon versus Aluminum). If there was also a variation of Junior (Scarlet) versus Senior (Epic) lines or M versus X, I think RED will again get some of those messy requests again and the momentum of Weapon will get stunted by the same old folks thinking they 'deserve' more for less and should pay less even though others had to pay more. Horrible word of mouth and marketing.

Apple had 14 variations of a Mac before Steve Jobs came back and created 4 distinctive product lines.

I totally understand wanting a cheaper version of Weapon (for those who can't afford it) but that's where I feel the Epic and Scarlet Dragon lines should now move towards, something more affordable to the masses that's still relevant quality against the competition.

Giving everything to everyone doesn't mean better business. Look at Sony and how they tried to offer every technology to every market. HDV, AVCHD, XDCam, Discs, tapes, digital formats. 5 new cameras a year (approx) to cover variations of the same 2 market (Broadcast, Film - Pro and Prosumer). Sony is the worst at naming their cameras too. Beats me to understand the difference name wise of an F7 versus an FS700. F55 fifty times better then an F5?

I'll go with whatever RED decides but I hope clarity doesn't get spoiled by distraction.

My own sort of "out there" thought was that RED, as indicated, will first consolidate everything into Weapon; regular and carbon models. This sort of drags all current owners up to the highest levels.

Then, perhaps, in a couple years, they might re-introduce a more entry level camera, like the Scarlet has been, to start a new cycle of getting new/young/entry-level camera folks into the fold and then repeat the whole process.

Far fetched, probably.

Ha, ha Glen. I was merely using the Sony naming convention to try and understand their naming in some sort of logical way. 50 +5 =55. Just an example and theory. No real truth.

Terry, your logic makes sense.

I had read the following to mean .. that as the CF Weapon was designed from the ground up - proportionally 'more' of the chassis could be Carbon-Fibre.

But maybe that 'do' was not a transitive verb (apologies for obfuscating syntax!?) ... as Phil paraphrased - the CF Weapon will be more functionally rich (perhaps as the Epic was to the Scarlet).

AJ

Yes there will be an Epic Dragon to Carbon Weapon path and this time the Carbon will actually do more.

I believe the Epic and Scarlet nomenclature will disappear for Weapon.

That is an interesting thought. My main dilemma right now, is I have a Scarlet MX and eventually want to get into an Epic. I apparently need to upgrade to a Dragon to be eligible for the Weapon upgrade, but I certainly can't afford to go Epic Dragon at the moment. I also don't want to jump on the upgrade to Scarlet Dragon just so I am Weapon eligible if that means I would be locked to the Scarlet platform moving forward. So I am on hold for the moment until there is some clarification on a Scarlet Dragon to Epic Weapon upgrade path, or, as, you speculate, a single unified Weapon platform.

Exciting times!

EDIT: Well, there seemed to be quite a few posts before mine that may have "answered" my dilemma. There was some mention of a Scarlet Dragon upgrade path to "top" Weapon. Very nice.

Yes, I am in your same position (Scarlet-X owner) and I will go to Scarlet Dragon now, before NAB, because with that, there is still a pathway to "the top."

assuming going from epic dragon (non-carbon) to carbon weapon the price will be higher than going to non-carbon weapon, will there be a path to change from non-carbon weapon to carbon weapon at a later time?

thanks!

Just got really, really official word as there has been some confusion regarding Mysterium-X upgrades.

You cannot have Epic or Scarlet Mysterium-X and pay for the Dragon upgrade and never physically send the camera in and then pay up from the Epic/Scarlet Dragon up to Weapon. This should be a given as it's been explicitly stated, but there's been a few who have been confused.

Weapon is a Dragon upgrade.

There is no direct to Weapon path from Mysterium-X. You must upgrade your camera to Dragon as there are "things" needed for the Weapon upgrade.

Additionally, Serial Number is not a factor in the Weapon upgrade. Fulfillment will be based on the camera type you are trading in, meaning this priority:

1. Carbon Dragon
2. Epic-M Dragon
3. Epic-X Dragon
4. Scarlet Dragon

Then within each group it will be by date and time stamp of your order placed.

This is official, so plan accordingly.

Big help Phil. I hope you can tease out of them what we can specifically upgrade to.

As for this part, I take it to mean date and time stamp of Weapon upgrade order?

And do you know if all Weapon upgrade orders will be filled ahead of new Weapon sales? (At least until a backlog is filled.)
