I've been returning to original SALT test so many times! Can't wait to see the results of this one.

Which lenses are in for a challenge this time, Evin?

Looking forward to it - I really enjoyed those first SALTS and would love to see come Canon glass evaluated. I'm tempted by the Optimo's but could get an awful lots of Canon lenses for the same money.

I hope that we'll finally see those legendary Nikon G primes side by side with Zeiss ZF/ZEs and Canon Ls

Are you posting a little write up of the proposed testing methodology ?
Is it the ' person sitting with xmass tree lights ' type of thing, or some charts, or a mix ?
Having some charts helps us understand what is happening optically to produce those 'creamy, organic, etc' looks that some people are after.

I was going to hold a mini lens test session in a couple of weeks, with a mix of 3rd party glass as well, including Tamron and Sigma, etc.
One of the problems is having a more than one sample of each, as the build variability is large with cheaper glass.

Hi Les, here is a link to S.A.L.T 1... Hope this gives you a better framework for what Evin is doing with these tests.

I hope this helps, I am on set or I would go into further detail.

Cheers,

Andrew

PS-- Thank you Evin for all the hard work and for sharing this invaluable information... And as always I hope that you and your wife are doing well.

Over the last year or so I have seen some first rate imagery from stills glass, particularly Canon L series. Evin's Nikon test shots were very impressive, makes me want a RED Nikon mount when they come out.

All that said, my week shooting with the Angie DP series Rouge Optimo 16-42 was a real treat - thanks #17 (Steve Tammi). We can debate whether its worth $20K or not, but it is a joy to work with and the IQ is terrific.

Don't know what glass Evin will be able to round up for this next round of SALT but if anything comes close to the Leica Cs I'll be very impressed. If I won the lottery tomorrow I would get two sets of the Leica Cs and give one set to Bear for Evin to use ;-)

Cheers - #19

Woof, Bear thanks you ;)

As for our methodology, we're going to simplify this test dramatically, the last time around we were a bit too ambitious and although it was very informative we were just not able to properly publish the resulting footage because of the sheer volume of material. This time around I'm limiting the lenses we'll test to those still zooms and primes most likely to be employed by Professional filmakers. The professional part is important and why you won't see any 18-200mm, or 3rd party lenses (Except the Tokina 11-16). In order to keep the test manageable I have to only test lenses that have what it takes to rock with the big boys and also that have a comparable lens from the other brands. There are way more options in still glass so it's very easy to go overboard.

As to my Optimos, well...

They are definitely worth $20K each.

I have all of the Canon primes and zooms listed on the other thread if you want to use them. I'd love to be a part of the test but I'm editing a feature in Aspen and won't be around so I'll have them delivered some other way. PM me if interested. Thanks for doing the tests!
