  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED WEAPON EVF

I found that if i was off centre ever so slightly it would start aberrating, technically the optical block is removable and you can hopefully change it in the future for something more robust. but so far there really isn't anything you can do.

Just got mine. Not massively familiar with EVF's, picture is for sure bright - resolution not as great as I expected.
As with other Red gear, very nicely made and packaged. A solid item for sure. Would've appreciated a small microfiber bag or a case for the EVF...

One question, I was surprised by how much chromatic aberration there is around the edges of the image, can totally eliminate by moving my eye but there doesn't seem to be a sweet spot where the whole image is visible with no magnification artifacts anywhere. Is this just the way it is with EVF's? Any tips how to minimize?

Maybe u got a weird copy? Can't fathom wanting more resolution, turn your sharpness up to 15.

It's one of the options in the "look" menu. I usually set all my monitor outputs to 25 because it looks better to clients.

Just to add, it doesn't sharpen the actual R3D, just what you see on the monitors while you are shooting.

@ Jake - you can adjust the sharpness?? Whut? How?

I see, that's good to know, never considered that, thanks

Do remember that Sharpness effects the ProRes and DNxHR/HD file recorded as it's part of a baked in Look you are creating. REDCODE RAW isn't effected by it.

@Phil

oh really? So PR and DNX burn in all this data like ± tint, sharpness, curves etc? I noticed this when recording proxies in RC4, but Even when Shooting RLF?
I noticed when I loaded on a custom LUT, the weapon would only produce Log ProRes files, it didn't seem to burn anything in.

I forget the exact details of the output settings, menu system wasn't very intuitive when it came to selecting various Color Gamma outputs and LUT application etc.

Just now had a chance to test out the new EVF outdoors and noticed a dead pixel... bummed. Shows up like a black dot. Anyone else have one?

im still really confuse on how or what effects the prores image.
how can you make sure its in some sort of log form?
or how can you bake in a look from camera?
is it the second choice in the menu where the default is redgamma4?
does "graded" have anything to do with it?

A lot of comments about the chromatic aberration that occurs when you shift your eye off center. Anyone have a more positive experience with this EVF? I've been considering purchasing one for its resolution, integrated buttons and cable less design, but I could save a bit of money with a Gratical Eye with WC bracket. Anyone loving their DSMC2 EVF?

+1

really want a 1 cable integrated solution... We have some old OLED ones as a point of ref

I just tested one today. Really liked the feeling but have not used an EVF before. I also looked at the Alexa EVF which had a similar feeling.
The image is quite large and very large. I could also afjust so that it corrected my vision.
