  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED WEAPON EVF

Just got mine today, awesome mandatory piece of gear ... don't try it unless you can afford to buy it. Is also a lot smaller (total size) then I was expecting. Another thing, is I am mainly on sticks so I really like the "arm" configuration, and since I like the 9 inch touch on the left side, the arm based approach is really nice for me.

Looks like a beast! One day I'll get mine =)
 
Sweet viewfinder, but I am finding the connector to be in precisely the wrong place for those wishing to mount it on any of the adjustable clutch type mounts that are available.

Not impossible to work around, but awkward & shows a lack of understanding by the design team about how operators actually set-up their cameras..

Thoughts?

Ben, I was shown a way you can flip the image, but wasn't in the monitor settings as one would expect, it was in a sub menu of 'Look' the cable would stick out to the left of the unit, but at least you can get a bracket going on the right... Bit of a hack job, I know. Skull logo would be upside down too. The red rep mentioned that panavision uk managed to rewire the connection to the back - some sort of wizardry.
 
Thanks for pointing this workaround out -- but, again, odd that the most generally versatile way to set-up a viewfinder is made so inelegant.

Yeah totally, they got too carried away on making it cableless, Overlooked how evfs are actually used on a daily basis. Maybe WC will come up with a low profile bracket that avoids the cable, but until then we're gonna have to use it upside down. Would be ideal if they made a version with the connection on the back/bottom
 
Glad that Im not the only one pulling my hair out about this. Seems a massive oversight. Looks like such a botched job with one 1/4-20 sticking out the top of the WC bracket!
 
You still can't zoom 1:1 during record to check focus?

The mounting plate only attaches to the top, so no way to have a 1/4-20 on the bottom of the EVF?
 
@ Chris - the mounting plate can also attach at the bottom too, I received one recently
@Ryan - I just got the extra small round chamois from 'blue star' - works fine

I just wish the evf had a heating element for humid/cold conditions - I believe the previous model had it.

Edward, if you wouldn't mind, could you do a quick shot of the blue star chamois on your EVF. Also comment on how well it is attached to the EVF rubber. I'm thinking of buying the same thing for my EVF2.

Perhaps Red might consider doing a version with the Lemo coming out the top or bottom... I am holding of buying one until sombody has a elegant clutch EVF mount that takes a lemo and doesn't thrust the evf out too far.
 
@ Patrick - some basic Pics of 2 sizes of Chamois, one is one extra small, other is small.
I actually prefer the 'small' size it gives you more surface area with your eye, maybe the Small Oval will wrap around better with ones face.

@ Michael - I'm actually thinking of creating a custom fitting that you would attach to the EVF, and it would fit into the brackets that the Arri alexa/mini/amira uses, based on the top mounting 15mm rail systems that we are familiar with. Also somehow make it be able to protect the cable from getting mashed over time. I always found arri brackets reliable and elegant, would like to bring that to my camera system.

Just got mine. Not massively familiar with EVF's, picture is for sure bright - resolution not as great as I expected.
As with other Red gear, very nicely made and packaged. A solid item for sure. Would've appreciated a small microfiber bag or a case for the EVF...

One question, I was surprised by how much chromatic aberration there is around the edges of the image, can totally eliminate by moving my eye but there doesn't seem to be a sweet spot where the whole image is visible with no magnification artifacts anywhere. Is this just the way it is with EVF's? Any tips how to minimize?
