I was very, very fortunate to get a few hours with the new RED V-Raptor 8K-VV just before the announcement and release to do a small test shoot. I had just a few hours with the camera without a crew, but I chose to make a quick little short film in that time while testing out exactly what this small camera camera can do.

Everything seen here was filmed at 8K 17:9, either 24fps or 120fps, and finished in 8K. There's a few BTS stills at the end to show various setups.

*YouTube still rendering 4K and 8K, but it's coming and I'll be posted some stills and frame grabs shortly.

Even on a laptop monitor the imagery showed remarkable DR. In the beach scene, the folds and texture in the dark wardrobe held even with the white wave tops below the clip. Loved the bokeh in the workbench scene and the ability to hold chroma in the torch flame. Look forward to seeing it at 8K, or even 4K on a Dolby monitor. Thanks Phil.

Phil, can you share the prores file if you dont mind? Vimeo gives option to download the file as well.Watching something on youtube just sucks. Worst compression ever.

More likely a well encoded H.265. I broke the internet with a small Komodo clip of me last time. The 8K master in ProRes 4444 is a chunky download.

Great job as always Phil. The image is really nice, felt different to Monstro and definitely Helium.

Thanks for this Phil.

:)

Thanks as always Phil. 8K VV 120fps is exciting. What you said about the speed of the camera - specifically buttoning on/off abd clip playback speeds- is just as interesting to me. Can you tell us if the 1:1 magnification on screen is quick now too?

And I'm wondering if you found any timelapse/frame summing/frame averaging functionality in this camera? One of the most interesting functions of DMSC1 imo.

Interesting! Thank you for doing that work and sharing with us, Phil!

Darn it, they should have given you the camera like 2 days earlier on a sunny day so you could have really hit the DR! LA has been sunny for weeks... RED gives you the new fancy camera and the clouds roll in damn it.

Phil, having graded it, are the color and the skin tones different to previous RED?

Looks like very "RED" skin tones and color... which is good for people slotting it into a RED show and making this work alongside other RED cams.

But also bad for people who dislike RED skin tones and color (eg me haha).

Can we get an HDR h.265 encode pls? Actually I'm good I can imagine haha.

Skin is very good and oddly one of the nice things about having the overcast beach is it shows exactly that.

Only color grade going on here is tweaking REDCODE RAW Temperature and Tint + philmColorR3 "sol" + one of my output transforms.

I'll post up some before and after stills relatively soon. Phone is blowing up after that live stream. Tackling messages from all over. Heh. A buddy is calling me in between takes right now. Wild.

Yep. That is very much what I was noticing. Very responsive when "doing things". I didn't have a touch screen for the shoot, so I remapped magnify to the smart side front record button and it works as fast as well as Komodo (which is good) and bunched record via the dumb side rare.

Little things are shockingly noticeable to me pretty quickly. Even the raised up area around the record button is really nice to find in a dark setting without looking. Lots of little things that don't exactly end up on a spec sheet.

Playback is quick. Currently right when you push play it jumps to the last rolled clip and starts playing. You can navigate to previous clips from there via the side menu panel. Fast forward was also working for playback, didn't do much take review, but I did test that a few times.

Phil, this was great stuff as usual, Nice work! This is going to be a must add to the toolbox. Can't wait to see some 600fps at 2k soon as that could come in very handy for some projects.

Okay. Pretty phenomenal day and getting wrangled into the livestream was a treat.

Been answering a lot of messages across platforms. I touched on some stuff on the stream, but using the camera "straight in" on a shoot was really interesting.

Some quick thoughts:

V-Raptor is pretty darn small, 4lbs naked, and you can certainly build it smaller than I did for this shoot if desired.

I used a variety of batteries, more to test than anything. Used on this shoot: GDU 98Wh, CoreSWX 98Wh, RED Branded CoreSWX batteries that are now listed on red.com, and Anton Bauer Titon Micro 150Wh. V-Raptor uses these smaller V-Mount batteries and as you and I learned on stream today there are going to be battery adapters for Gold Mount and such. Hoping for a Micro-V to Full-V too if anything to add more D-Taps and AUX. But we'll see. Don't know exactly how long I was getting per battery because I was powering a monitor too, but I'll dig into that later. On stream people were mentioning 98Wh nets you around an hour uptime. I actually felt like I was getting more out of a battery than that. Will know more on that front with additional testing.

Side Menu Panel - I didn't have a touch screen and everything I did was through that. Works a treat and I think it's obviously something people have been asking for.

The camera is really, really responsive. Like instant record, cut, re-roll. Actually a time saver when it comes down to it. It feels "good" to have this level of instant response.

Record buttons are easy to find without looking due to raised areas around the buttons. One on the camera front, smart side. One on the rear, dumb side. In the case of this shoot I mapped Magnify to the front record button. It works and is as responsive as Komodo. I used some of the Exposure and Focus Check Tools and they work as expected.

I ran a signal off of one of the SDI ports to a SmallHD Cine 7. 7 incher feels great on the camera, still a bit wider. RED's/SmallHD's touch is also 7". Excited to see we have pogo power and signal through the top of the camera. These are 12G SDI and can handle 4K out individually or mirrored. Pretty amazing in a camera of this size.

48v Phantom Power has re-entered the camera! Big one for me and many others who need audio in camera.

Camera is quiet! New high speed top fan and thermoelectric inside the camera kept it nice and cool too. The workshop I was filming in was upper 90 degrees and past 100 at some point. Beach was relatively cool.

Hard to say much regarding camera boot, but pretty quick. I did time sensor calibration. That lands at 4:30, which is nearly 2X as fast as Monstro. On the stream RED mentioned the camera hold temperature much, much better due to the new enhanced thermals. That's only welcomed news.

New Sensor and OLPF are looking really, really good. Nothing you see in my little test short was on accident. I lit the first scene for a really broad dynamic range, deep shadows and hot highlights. And on the beach, particularly as all of that was 8K 120, I made sure we had some high frequency detail in his shirt and sand textures. LQ frame grabs look alarmingly good. Test shoot masked as a short film if you will.

No noise reduction on the footage, and if you think about that at 8K 120 that's pretty damn good. Footage seems to look good at higher ISOs. I rated at 800, but tinkered around a bit at 1 stop up and 1 stop down. But also just lifting up some the darker background material on the interiors up to 3200 looks really decent.

Initially reaction is the camera is small and powerful. Hard to know if this sensor bests "pure Monstro", but it does appear to do some things better. I'll also dig into that.

But feel free to ask me anything at this point. Following a lot of the conversations across social media since the announcement. Interesting to see reactions to this particular camera, disregarding a lot of the "no brain chatter", but the sincere responses have been worth reading and responding to.

Phil, what would be the s35mm cut of the Raptor sensor? I.e what would be a probable s35mm Raptor camera? Does it land on 6K and have a sensor size similar to what Dragon had? Or is it more like 5K? I'm speculating on what a possible Raptor s35mm camera would be like and cost.
