  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The internal drive is indeed a SATA unit - interface capable of up to 3Gbps. Unfortunately, no mobile 2.5" HDDs (nor SSDs) are available to maximize that bandwidth. But yes, a fast internal HDD is a good idea. Currently the fastest HDDs on the market is the Seagate 320GB 7200rpm drive. The 5400rpm 500GB drives are close in terms of read speed, but slower for seek and write times. There are SSDs available that are a lot faster for reads, but none really perform any better for writes at the moment.

It's possible to sustain writes out via FW800 of about 75~80MB/s if the firewire drive can handle it. And that's just as good, if not better, than most internal options at the moment.

A hacker option that may work (and I may try it soon); is to remove the internal optical drive and pipe the SATA port out. It won't be a full functionality eSATA port, but I bet I can still connect an eSATA RAID to it just fine.

We like the Intel X-25M SSD's. Much higher performance than the Apple spec'd drives. And any SSD should put a platter based hard drive to shame.

At Digital Cinema Society on Saturday, I demo'd a 17" MBP with Snow Leopard with 160 GB SSD. I was able to drive multiple streams of h.264 video in QT while simultaneously doing an AJA system test with writes of 77 MB/s and then pulling reads of 262 MB/s.

Ask Ketch Rossi--he has one of our systems and loves it.

Not to hijack this thread, but we keep getting this error message on launch.

"Your RedRocket firmware is out of date. You have version: 1.1.2.23, you need version 1.1.4.14"

AFTER we installed the firmware upgrade twice. When we close the box, the app launches, sans preferences. Anyone else experiencing this? Is this a bug, or did we do something wrong? seems like a fairly simple firmware upgrade.

I didn't mention the 500GB 7200rpm drives in my last post... You don't want one. They suck. As of right now, Seagate is the only one shipping such a beast and between NewEgg, Amazon, etc.. They have about a 1.5 star rating due to the high amount of failures. Give them a few more months to iron out that product line, I'm sure it will improve. Or if you don't mind the risk, go for it. They'll gladly replace the drive under warranty. :biggrin5:

IMO, the SSDs are a good option for a system drive in the MBP. They're quick for reads and don't have any moving parts, consume less power... But they're expensive and no faster for writing to the drive than the fast HDDs.

Either way, you will still want a good external drive solution and I'd recommend something that can connect via FW800 and eSATA. Hopefully FW3200 and USB3 will make it into the next Macbook Pro systems. Then none of this will be a big deal and we'll all have enough bandwidth again. :) Or at least it will be a lot better.. You can never have enough.

Alright, I'll probably just go with the SSD then. This is going to be awhile down the road (hopefully around when I get Scarlet), and hopefully by then FW3200 and USB3 will be out. I heard somewhere, I think from Peter actually (don't quote me because it was ages ago) but they can easily make FW3200 from FW800 with a firmware update. That'd be very convenient.

I'm having the same problem Tim. Have tried reinstalling everything. Same results. We must be missing something.

Deanan? sent you an email. Anyone else having this issue?

Also, we can get it to debayer, but cant get any output to our DELL 30" that is plugged
into the RR.

We can't even select it as a preview monitor, its just not there.

EDIT: The light on the monitor goes blue "on" but its black... yet it plays fine in RocketCine-X
what am I doing wrong?

Is the machine completely shutting down after the firmware upgrade?
(a reboot is not enough)

Just about to reply to your email also...

Some monitors don't support very many formats. The apple 30" and dell 30" seem to be pretty restricted. I'd start with 1280x720 and 1920x1200 as they're the two most common formats supported by monitors.

Yes, twice. left it off for 15 minutes the second time. Still get the error every time we launch the app. But again, it still launches. Just not sure what version is launching and assume this is why we are having playback issues?

Thanks. We figured as much. The 1929 x1200 results in the monitor going from amber sleep mode to blue "on" but no image.

Same for 1280 x720 . We will keep trying different options... thanks.
 
Tim, the Dell 30" is very restricted as to what it accepts. It will accept 1280x800 or 1/4 native resolution, at the proper timings. I've had no luck driving one from the Rocket or from many other devices.

alas, therein lies the issue. boi oi oi oi oing. :embarassed:

thanks Jeff. We will just have to use preview monitor tomorrow with an HD-SDI to HDMI Converter. As we haven't received our Pro 11 Panny yet.

No rush, not for a client. Just trying to play with the new toys. Still got weeks of buildout as well.

BTW: For any of you considering RAID for the RR or your MAC editing suite. The MAXX DIGITAL EVO 2K 8TB came plug-n-play out of the box, expert packing. Drop the card and plug it in and it boots right up flawlessly. We were ingesting RAW test files within minutes. **and less than $4K for RED ONE owners** WOW.

Peter Majtan at MAXX builds some killer gear. Cant wait for the Pocket Rocket for our MBPRO 17.

Torrey - is there a target price on the 320 ? Still thinking about snatching up that 256 Corsair for my MBP ....

Drifting off-topic as always, but I just have to correct you there, Jeff. SSDs are considerably faster than the fastest HDDs at both sequential and random write operations. Maybe not when comparing against a large disk array, but as a system drive, there's a huge performance boost in both read and write speeds, as long as you get a drive with a good hardware controller (ie. an Intel one!).

Frank. We finally got oit to work by

1. Deleting firmware install and downloading it again.
2. This time there was a small text box for choosing "Y" which was not there last time. The install at first took seconds... on second attempt, took a couple minutes.

Now fixed up and running. :emote_happyhappy:

The 2nd issue was replacing the DELL 30", sadly does not support squat.
So it's not an option for the RR. :mad2:

But Red Rocket now streaming beautifully to a DELL 24" via DVI. :thumbup1:

Now on to testing. RocketCine-X is bitchin (to coin a 90's phrase)
