  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

Hey, Nir... How did you get to the end of this thread without seeing this? There is a mobile solution coming soon. You can see a picture of the prototype in post #1066 of this thread. And some pictures that come before it show a larger 2-slot production unit that may be useful for some as well.

The real drawback to the mobile solution will be overall bandwidth to and from the RED Rocket™, as an ExpressCard adapter on the MBP or other notebook will only allow for about 1/8th of the Rocket's maximum bandwidth. But it should still prove useful for certain things, especially real-time onset playback from a full 4K debayer.

Thanks Jeff yes I read that post just wasn't clear about it being planed as a Red made unit or a third party.

We've discussed the limitations of band width via the single express lane and read speeds of internal and external HDD here many times. So I agree with you it is becoming obvious that the most common use of RR on a laptop will be real time play back on set. Possibly if combined with color correction software such as 3CP or Speed Grade play back 4K scaled down to HD with a look applied.

Hey guys - just a quick update - I have shown yesterday the final alloy version of our "Pocket Rocket" to Jarred and we will be announcing the final specs & pricing early next week. Units will be available for shipment in quantities in the second half of October...

Fasten Your seatbelt and get Your astronaut license - the "Pocket Rocket" is about to take off...

PS: We also have a solution to the "bandwidth problem". You can expect close to real-time transcodes on the set as well...

realtime / inline compression of the data pipe? Or something else..? Either way, I'm definitely interested.

Yup yesterday we saw 2 solutions in various states of completion... Peter's box and the Ron's MaxxDigital Box. Its very cool that multiple portable solutions are just around the corner...

You could conceivably capture the output data before it goes 'back up' the narrow pipe to the MBP and send it directly to some kind of external storage.

Very Exciting...Tks Guys

Yeah, I was thinking that too. I think it came up in this thread before when they showed the external box with two card slots. Theoretically, the box could have both a RED Rocket and a SAS/SATA controller and the output could be directed along the localized PCI-E bus rather than back to the host system.

OK guys, just a quick update:

- Both prototypes have been finalized and are in fully working condition
- We have initiated the manufacturing production
- First shipping units will be available in the second half of October
- Final pricing will be announced before the end of this week (or at least a close estimate)
- The final design has been locked off and You can see the base unit bellow
- The shipping version will be cable-less solution that will also hold the laptop in place and offer rackmounting of the unit. For security reason I can't post those images yet...
- More info this weekend...

We are all excited about this product!

Selected resellers of the RED Rocket™ will be authorized to use the new RED Rocket™ logo on certified products containing the RED Rocket™...
Jarred was very much involved in the development process and as You can clearly see the design was inspired by RED-ID...

Many thanks to everyone at RED who helped us with this first DERYL Gear product. Fasten Your seat-belts - You ain't seen nothing yet!

Peter,

Cableless is a great idea.

Is your 2 slot version working at x4 or x8? If I can keep the RR in the chassis all the time and don't have to sacrifice the speed when it's connected to Mac Pro, that will be great. It would serve to work with Mac Book Pro at x1 speed with storage solution and expanding one slot for Mac Pro.

Nice stuffs! I wonder... Could this be used as a portable RR for workstations too? I mean... We buy one of these and a bunch of HBA's for our workstations so we can move it to whatever workstation that needs it and plug it in WITHOUT opening the case and inserting a PCI-card. That would be golden and for sure more interesting then using it on a laptop, atleast for us. =)

This is the plan. The only limit is that the HBA is x1 PCIe only - the same as the Express34 card. This will not have any effect on real-time playback, but any file conversion will be limited to 250 MB/s...
