  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

This is pretty exciting... Ron from Maxx Digital just sent me some photos of the prototype EXPANDO for the RED Rocket that Maxx Digital have been working on with Peter.... it's getting close :)

Cool Ron! A version that works as an expansion chasis for mac pro would be super-cool. I'm guessing you thought of that already? Like, the mac has an sas-type cconnecctor, but the areca or atto is actually in the external box? That way I could keep my fiber connection to the shared storage AND my evo - plus the kona 3. He'll, this thing configured like that, I could use it in the bay OR the
field!

but thats not a RR in there is it?

SAS HBA and a capture card.

1 slot for dvi out
2nd for sdi outs.

dont see how unless ya have a 3rd port..

unless the sdi's pop out somewhere else?

Though using a SAS HBA going to a raid and a RR will saturate the expansion port no ?
 
(Fiber and Kona) or SAS and Redrocket... on a MacBook??? relax guys its just a 1x PCIe lane... 2.5Gbit minus overhead...

We need a real MacPro class system on set...

I'm building the prototype... of my portable CinePack system... a tender to the FiberPack portable storage...

My test system as of today it has 20fps 1080p from Color, to Blackmagic HD pro 3 HD-SDI out, with no RR, at full res 4k proxies... It has installed an nVidia 9800GT, a Fiber Channel 4G, a Blackmagic and it has one 1x PCIe free for the Qio dual internal CF reader and a full x16 PCIe waiting for RRocket... all that with batteries run for four hours... it utilizes i7 quad core with OSX 10.5.7... (Alpha testing system) its a dual boot system with Vista also...

The FC card can be replaced by SAS card for LTO connection...

Two boot SSD's Win/Mac, one Raid10 SSD internal 1Tbyte drive with 400mbytes R/W speed... or instead you can use the FiberPack for 6Tb online storage on set...

Plus two removable Raid-0 1Tbyte drives (that is two sets of two disks) in order to do a mirror copy to each drive set with speeds of 130Mbytes/sec... the removable drives can be set also in Raid-1, so a four disk backup... with 70Mbytes/sec... to make happy Dino G also...

It will have WiFi draft N and a four port 1Gbit switch in order to connect all MacBook's, Avid's etc... that will be around it, or to use remote desktop because the 12.1" LED screen will be too small and the waterproof backlit keyboard will not be too easy to use with Color...

One small detail would be, that the same system it will be able to do RED, all RGB444 real time 1080 cameras, ARRIRaw, P2 workflow and SONY SxS workflows... The perfect all around DIT/DataWrangler system...

Ahh... I forgot... all that in an airline carry on Peli case...

By the end of September - early October I will have tested the RRocket also, and I will start building the final prototype chassis...

Sorry guys, I don't have photos or designs yet, since its a bunch of cables and boards on a Lab table...

Hmm... probably I will draw a block diagram of the system in few days...
 
Well they wouldn't be out of luck...it'd just look a bit like that things huge in comparison! The 17" and it just looks together...
But you would be right on the express card side if you mean the new 15" laptops...I've got an old one until next summer...

THAT THING LOOKS AMAZING! I'm curious as to if you by the box and then put ur rocket inside or if you have to buy it as a set...

Correct. But there are some advantages to having a SAS solution and would make for some nice connectivity options.

Other than smooth, high-res playback for spot checking footage or creating looks on-set, I'm still unsure of the overall usefulness of the mobile Rocket setup. I think a lot of people are thinking or hoping it will do a lot more than it ultimately will.

Always the best solution. But not always practical. I do enough shooting in locations where a Mac Pro would just be downright impossible. In fact, there are times when the RED One puts us right at the breaking point of what gear we can carry. Epic-X and the FF35 Epic / Scarlet can't get here soon enough.

Its just a 1x lane, so to work with an RR and a SAS for LTO backup, it will have to have, some kind of datapath switching... so how you will work with two cards??? While it backup to LTO, that takes hours, you will have to work with RR... I don't thing it will be possible... Probably two MacBook's and two expanders one for SAS and one for RR... I guess the second slot is only for the I/O bracket...

A direct to tape play out of 3RD's, will change the world towards to RED...

It's exactly what I'm trying to solve...

Out of the trunk/backpack/donkey/sleigh/dinky/boat, put it down to mud/10cm water/whatever, open cover, switch it on, 30 seconds after you are ready to do everything backup/edit/grade/transcode/playout... no cables, no connections of drives/PSU's/cardreaders etc, no power, no table, no cart, just the CinePack and an unfoldable chair (or the short Sachtler tripod box which is my favorite)...

A MacPro class system in 45 seconds ready everywhere... its my dream...

If I succeed, It will be out in few months...

Thats what the original footprint of the device was said to be

Evan does that mean that your going OSX?

This is "just" a normal expansion chassis for any two PCIe cards. You can have RED Rocket™ & SAS card, or any other combination. We also have a much more compact (and lot more solid) version that holds just the RED Rocket™. This version is also battery powered, so can work without main power source. I will be posting more photos this weekend. Just now playing with RED Cine X on it with the RED Rocket™ - all of the batteries...

I'm testing everything under OSX...

The system will have everything working in Windows when it ships to client.

It will have a boot manager (like Apples bootcamp) that will allow the user to buy OSX retail box, if he wish to, (it will be Snow when CinePack will be available) and put it on the DVD drive, follow Apple's instructions (not mine), and just do a straight normal install, reboot and have OSX running perfectly... install the latest drivers for BMD/AJA, Qlogic FC, RRocket, Qio, FCP7 or whatever... and have a full functioning dual boot system... No hacks no tricks just straight install... Basically whatever has drivers for OSX it work straight away... just remove the box from the Peli housing open it from side and put whatever PCIe card you wish as a normal MacPro... The only limitation will be the graphics card that due to power constrains it will be the only one that it will be compatible...

The machine has a lot of free areas, in order user to stick the Apple provided stickers with the Apple label, which included in the OSX retail box in this way he will have his system Apple labeled as EULA is asking... :closedeyes:
