  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Roadmap...

Not open for further replies.
1) Dragon is FF35. 2) Epic-S has been delayed until May/June to incorporate dragon at launch but 6k will only be doable maybe without HDRx (?which is fine with Dragon?) or else in burst for stills.

There are your two surprises. Or at least I hope those are the two.

I think I remember Red saying that HDRx will be incorporated in all cameras from here on out. I personally believe Epic-S is just gone. I think this goes with Red's philosophy of not dumbing down their products. I would just hope there's still an interchangeable Scarlet...

the roadmap jim put up, then commented on to say that RED reserves the right to change at will, indicates that the order the roadmap is listed does not indicate the order of the release of each product only a very very loose guideline.

I am curious as to what makes you draw these conclusions. Certainly it could indicate order... or not. Did I miss a specific clarification from Jim?

Thank you for the roadmap update!!

Sounds like projectors aren't as close as I had selfishly hoped. Oh well, RedRay is more pragmatic for 4k so it was expected. My other guess (I know you hate it when we guess, sorry) is that you've already had a working Dragon with 15-stops + of DR in single exposures since NAB; and that you can't friggin' wait to show us once it is ready for prime time after some serious heavy-duty torture testing. Bet it comes out in FF35 sensor-area flavor, to completely revolutionize the stills market! Just hope photosites stay small enough for 4k+ resolved in ~S35 sensor area, then everything beyond that will be pure benefit (and about real 8k).

Also I'll repeat here again:

I must say now that we had a lot of RED roadmaps in the last 5 years.

What we would need definitely is a serious and exact RED product line for the next year or two...

I'm sure more or less people would like to hear something more about that precise RED product line than about that possible RED Roadmap.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions or make assumptions. They are going to put those amazing mini-Primes to work on something, and it won't be a fixed lens camera.

That is exactly what we will NOT do.

Jim

Its not really that hard to figure out where Red is headed. The trick is to look forward and forget about the past. My confidence level in their ability to deliver the tech is absolute. The thing that has stymied motion imaging development in the past has been underestimating the rate at which innovation can propagate through the professional sector and a failure of imagination. The demand has always been there-- its actually the low-hanging fruit in the equation. It helps that Jim is a stark raving lunatic who sees boundaries as targets for destruction-- and that's why I give him my money.

Thanks

Thanks

Jim,

Thanks for the Roadmap. I've been on the road since the beginning and I trust where you are headed. :thumbup1: Although ....... my checkbook is not to happy about it! :furious3:

Show me a company that is prepared to do that, and I'll show you one heading for bankruptcy.
PS it would be the same one, for the sake of simplicity.

For example Sony call it New Products:

New Products

- F65 Super 35mm 8K Camera
- SR-R1000 SRMASTER Storage Unit
- PMW-TD300 3D XDCAM EX Camcorder
- HXR-NX3D1E 3D NXCAM Camcorder
- PMW-F3K Super 35mm XDCAM EX Camcorder
- SR-R1 SRMASTER Portable Recorder (HD-SDI)
- NEX-FS100EK Super 35mm NXCAM Camcorder
- HXR-NX70E Dust/Waterproof NXCAM Camcorder

Ok I'll join in on the wild speculation.

Jim seems to be dropping hints Dragon is sooner than we think. Notice the price for Epic-X goes up $7,000 Jan. 1st 2012. What if that is because they start shipping with the Dragon sensor Jan. 1st?? The Mysterium-X upgrade was about $6,000 so the price increase looks about right.

That could also explain why Epic-S is not on the roadmap...they are waiting to release it with the Dragon sensor.

Maybe the Dragon sensor is 6k/FF35 but you can window down to 5k for S35.

Highly unlikely but anything is possible with Jim.

I don't think RED would put in the time and effort to develop a state of the art Fixed lens and proudly show it off at all the shows only to scrap it later.

Yes, I think THEY can... (I also think it will not be the first time they do it) The knowledge and experience they gainned from the R&D isn't lost and can be used to develop other variations much faster.

I could see that happening in the very early stages of a product, like when Scarlet was 3k for $3k, but I still don't think they would do that in its current stage (or at least what we think its current stage is). It seems like Scarlet is too close to being finished for them to make such a big change. Although being as unpredictable as RED is (which I think is a good thing) its really hard to tell. But it goes without saying that what ever changes they make I'm know it's for the better. As long as the price doesn't jump up too much

+1 (Exacly what I'm guessing)

Also, I think Scarlet is going to be 4K with the M-X sensor and 2/3 wil be dropped. That would explain the fixed Scarlet lenses trailing because it would have to be redesigned for S35. There would be a huge saving in supply chain, assembly line, etc because the would be more shared component between Epic and Scarlet.

That is exactly what we will NOT do.

I agree. Altough, a 1 to 3 months horizon would help making production decisions while in prep and not give enough time for competition to catch up.

Of course in keeping with Sanjin's OCD style that would also need to be accompanied by an equally long list of links/quotes/references along with a nod to the make and model of the keyboard and computer your are posting with and any lenses or cameras that may be sitting near you at the time of posting.

Serious. Exact.

Is that 45,000 minutes written there? That is 750 hours = 31 days and 6 hours. That would be October 9, 2011 (early morning).

What happens then? :)

That was in reference to a perspective to 45000 feet up in the air, which is probably the approximate altitude Jim rides in his Bombadier Global Explorer jet, which someone linked to earlier in this thread.

One thing for sure: Once you see his Global Explorer with the giant RED Logo and the huge map of the world all over it, you will never forget it :). Most private jets are deliberately bland to show no clue of their owner's identity, so they can be chartered while idle. "Bland" and "Jim" don't mix. I'm going to take a wild guess and say that chartering isn't much in Jim's plans for his baby.
