  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Roadmap...

I wrote something similar in another thread.

Here are my thoughts:

1. Epic-S scrapped and everything go back to Scarlet (as it was in the original plan)
Why do that? Wouldn't moving the low-end S35 camera, whatever it's called, back to the less-robust Scarlet platform be kinda dumb at this point?

3. Jarred already said that for the fixed Scarlet, the delay has something to do with the lens. My guess is it's a redesign of the lens to go from 2/3 to S35
The delay was ascribed to shortage of a component, although there may have been additional reasons.

I don't think Scarlet is a less robust platform at all. It will have less processing power but not less quality.

Obviously, the Epic-S isn't mentionned anymore for a reason. But I don't think that Epic-X will remain the "entry level" for S35 either. So the entry level S35 will be Scarlet or Surprise #1 or 2. For now, I'm going for Scarlet.

I may be thinking too far ahead. But is there anywhere in this road map that Red might consider making or branding monitors/LCD or LED screens at 4k/5k? I believe this will be the standard as well. Just a thought.

While it is true that he hasn't mentioned it i didn't give it any thought until people began assuming that it was significant somehow. When asked about Epic-S on at least two occasions, Jim has confirmed that it is still in the plan. He has been intentionally vague about it saying "We know what you want." without elaborating.

One reason comes directly from Jim, he has said that they don't wish to broadcast their plans to the competition.

Reason #2 "Everything in life changes... including our camera specs and delivery dates..." It's fair to expect that the "Epic-S" will look fairly different from what we have been anticipating.

Reason #3 is pure speculation, but I would put a little money on the possibility that it will not be named "Epic-S"

One other thing is clear; whether or not he says ANYTHING of substance, Jim always causes a stir among the minions... Particularly now.

The Epic-S is competitively priced for what it can do. I think RED is planning on Epic-S to make a huge impact on the industry and force competitors to rethink the sub-$20,000 market. It will be hugely popular. Thus RED is being vague about their plans in this regard.

Am I correct in thinking that only the EPIC-X brains will be eligible for the sensor upgrade program, and not the EPIC-S (in whatever format it arrives in)?
Also will an EPIC body house a Monstro sensor?

This was always true. EPIC-S was not going to be Dragon upgradeable, most likely because Dragon needs the much faster processor power.

D

I have a feeling the Dragon may have some answers to this :)

Maybe. We can probably assume that Dragon is a 6K sensor, but that does not mean it's FF35, nor that it's 3:2 aspect ratio. Those factors are key to the FF35 camera, aka the "IMAX Killer".

Dragon doesn't need 6K or any kind of resolution enlargement.

What it would need is more a half or one stop in terms of Native Dynamic Range

just to keep up with the competition (Alexa, F65 today and Genesis 2 tomorrow).

Sanjin,

You need to get off the island, get your ass to Amsterdam with that PENDANT and start hypnotizing a few people. While you have them under, tell them to make the greatest sensor in the world.

Leaving competition behind like in dust of horses from spaghetti westerns...

:) LOL

See you soon in Toscana Mr. S.

For cinema perhaps but a 2:1 chip would be awkward for stills shooting.

Look-around is nice for tracking etc as well.

Most anamorphic lenses assume a taller sensor as well.

Lots of reasons a 3:2 chip would be great, even if you deliver your film @ 1.85 or 2.39.
