I have for a while been trying to find out what the Cooke S4/i lenses usable image circle is, with usable I mean without vignetting and fallof of sharpness.
I have mailed Cooke optics twice with the same question - are the S4/i lenses 100% future proof for sensors like the new Epic s35 with a sensor of 30x15mm size.
In the technical info on the Cooke S4/i lenses it says that the image cirgle is 30mm, so everything should be ok...
-What I´m curious about is if the image circle is perfect, in the sense that there´s no vignetting or other disturbance in the edges of the circle.

It would be a pretty nasty surprise for me to find out this the hard way if I as planned buy the "Cooke Red Kit" and plan to use them on an Epic S35 in the future. I know very well that they work fine on a RED One.

So does anyone on this forum know the answer to this? Cooke optics seems to ignore my mails, which furthers my concern in this question even more...

if the image circle on the S4's is a 30mm diameter than i would think they do not cover the 30x15 frame as the diameter would not cover the corners as the diagonal would be 33mm+. could be wrong. would prefer that i am.

Why should you be wrong? They were designed for S35 film, nothing more, many years before RED came out with 30 x 15.

This is important for older lenses too, say Cooke 25 250 and 18 100 plus countless others. Im not expert in this area and need to know more, would it be possible to create a sticky chart to list what lenses cover what image circle/sensor. I cant find the info collated in any one place unless some one can point me to it.

Thanks Matthew, that kind of stuff is such a help, you make this community a better place with every post :)

Thanks for the PM Matthew!
The list you have is interesting indeed for me who is in the lensbuying "hell" right now :D
Really really hard to decide what to buy, considering the future...
I´ll wait a bit longer and see.
It would be interesting to see the ARRI LWZ and the Cooke 15-40 in that chart too.

Thanks.
There is a lot more I have recorded, I just need to add them to the list.

Matthew, fantastic resource, thank you. What are the chances of you putting a set of measurements for S2/3 cookes?

I've been building the list ever since RED announced their 5K sensor and everyone is concerned with future compatibility of their lenses. I note the image sizes when a lens passes through our shop. So naturally, finding a set of S2/3s is a bit less common than a set of S4s. I've been slacking off lately, as I still have several common zooms to add to the list such as the Cooke 20-100 and the Angenieux 25-250 HR. In fact, I just updated it a little bit yesterday, so keep an eye on the list. It's growing pretty quick.

Matt, this is fantastic. I had it in my head that only Master Primes and RPPs would cover 5K. But it looks like the set of Ultras I had my eye on will do just fine. Wonderful!

Thank you for the work you're doing on this list, it's going to be an invaluable resource.

Matthew, the first site I have is: http://matthewduclos.wordpress.com/2009/06/02/lens-image-circle-database/#more-68 it has an Image Circle over a rectangular Sensor/Film image, I’m not sure which image it is.

But then I went to: http://web.me.com/ducloslenses/DataRef/ImgCir.html and the image had improved since this morning! I got to say it again, it’s just wonderful what you are doing, Thanks! I know that is still work in progress, but it would help to add the S35 and the FF35 frame sensor sizes to the 2/3 and Red One Frame sensors to the images on the right! Also the film holes across the top of the still fame might also help. Just some suggestions. Keep up the good work.

They are there... The page is just having some problems... :(
I've been hauling butt with the Duclos Lenses website (major data loss) lots of little problems here and there.. Ill make sure everything is crystal. Thanks for the heads up.

Matthew you are absolutely right, the web page: http://web.me.com/ducloslenses/DataRef/ImgCir.html keeps on improving every day. If I might offer a suggestion, and it’s only a suggestion: I would put the S35 35mm X 15mm sensor between the super 35 film frame and the full 35mm still film frame. Then the FF35 36mm X 24mm sensor bellow the Still frame. However I must complete you on your work in progress, keep up the good work!

Matthew your web site definitely continues to improve, again I’m only suggesting, so the way you want to do it is the way it will be. I do have some more suggestions. Because the list is going to be fairly long, I would suggest that you move the Image Circle that is now in the left of the page to right of the page just above the Scarlet 2/3 image. You might also consider putting the diagonal measurement bellow each of the images so you don’t run too much to the right of the page, and then you would have enough space to spell the word diagonal without having to abbreviate the word. I cannot emphasize that what you are doing is just simply great!
