  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED RAVEN! RED RAVEN! RED RAVEN!

Red should make a camera for horror films called the REDRUM...

Nice post David.

"Wendy, I'm not gonna hurt ya, I'm just gonna film you here with this here Raven camera."

Perhaps it's a redux of the Scarlet using boards that were to slow for Epic. Perhaps RED (or their partner) is cutting 8K sensors for the VV Weapon and during QC they are discovering many of them have one or two bad photo sites. Rather than tossing them in the trash, perhaps they could cut them in half and put the good half into the Raven. This would be a roughly square, 4K by 4K sensor that would require roughly half the processing capacity of the 8K cut. The 4K vertical would be great for anamorphic capture and cine-photo applications.

Yes, after the Bayer pattern penalty it might not resolve a full 4K horizontal, but I'd expect it to measure out very similar to other nominally 4K cameras in it's market segment. If you absolutely have to have kitchen clean 4K then use a Weapon, Alexa65, 15 perf, etc...

I don't expect very high frame rates due to the demand that puts on the internal processing pipeline and read/reset properties of the Dragon tech.

Well, I love anamorphic so it would be fantastic if it works out that way. But my 2c is that they'll probably stick with their widescreen format.

EG instead of cutting the sensor in half, just use the center section if there were bad pixels in the edges.

Exactly. And let's be honest: the criteria of kitchen clean 4K is a very small subset of our industry. Even big budget feature films. Sure Netflix wants it... but they don't pixel peep to an insane degree.

Yup, agree, again, sadly! But I can rent for high speed.

Just for clarity, was the Scarlet not a good indie camera? It does come in 2 sensor flavors. Where will the Raven list on the RED.com drop down menu (above or below the Scarlet)?

Once I see full frontal pricing on the Weapon categories, I can genuinely get excited that something new is around the corner.

Good point. The Scarlet is an excellent indie camera.

FWIW, indies often need more performance from the camera/format than better budgeted shows since there is typically less of a lighting package for INTs and less bounce/diffusion/scrims/etc on EXTs.

The Raven will find it's niche, the open question is how large is that user base, and what other options are in the buyer's wheelhouse.

I am very hopeful that there will be a functional "strip n grip" build option for the Raven that keeps the "regular camera" schtick semi-believable for picking up shots in places where permits are problematic to obtain. I'd also love to have something easy to walk around with for various life situations where I want something better than an iPhone, but don't want to lug my Epic around.

IAC, I think it's going to be very interesting to see how RED's DNA (and tech portfolio) intersects with the market segment the Raven appears to be aimed at. This is not a dig, far from it - I think RED just might be the right guys to nail the "ultra compact yet still legit" motion/stills camera segment. They have honed their chops over the last 9 years and sold a lot of cameras. I'd bet RED has recovered the NRE costs on many of their core technologies, most of which will likely be easily ported to the Raven program.

I look forward to checking one out.

I time traveled to NAB 2016, and this is what I saw:
RED Raven is a fixed mount camera that uses a normal 6k Dragon sensor with 'standard' OLPF. It records in 4k Prores up to 60fps from the 5.5k sensor area. It does NOT support redcode. Specs:
-Both EF and PL mount bodies available (fixed mount, not swappable)
-Weapon body style
-Prores 422 (all flavors)
-4k, UHD, 2k, & 1080p resolutions supported
-Up to 60fps in 4k/UHD
-Surround view monitoring supported (past the 5.5k sensor area)

I was about to ask about price, but then got pulled back into Sept 2015.
It makes sense to me cuz:
-Red is committed to their dragon sensor, they aren't going to send out anything less or different (fragmenting their imaging brand, or releasing new tech on lower-tier products).
-Red would not promote using their dragon sensor at only the 4k crop (m43, like some have theorized) for a few reasons, including noise and insufficient resolving power.
-Redcode is a premium feature, and will be finally treated as such (like other raw formats) now that prores is part of the RED equation.
-Finally a good use for 120gb minimags
-Will be the new stepping stone to Weapon, as AKS, Modules, Media, and Lenses will all be cross-compatible.

In the central hall, I saw Arri announce a >4k sensor camera due in 2017, but that's for another thread...

Any takers?

I have to say that I have never been impressed with their design aesthetics.
I really like RED's designs, save for the R1. That's very wishy-washy, though its performance of course is terrific.

Can't see RED abandoning S35, or releasing a camera that's only 4K. Doesn't seem in their DNA.
Yep.

Red should make a camera for horror films called the REDRUM...
Shhh! Do you wanna get sued?!

Actually... why not have high frame rates - but only at high compression ratios? That would be a good compromise between features, bandwidth and cost. Those who own the more expensive cameras won't worry too much, as they have higher frame rates again, plus they can use lower compression ratios.

Because HFR are already at high compression ratios on the Epic X and Epic Dragon. I want to say in most cases it's around 15:1 as is. I'm sure with the new SSD's its better but I haven't personally tested it or researched it.
