  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

In the aftermath of the WPN announcement, and the endless pages of wailing tears about how RED had abandoned the indie filmmaker - the little guy. Jarred did try to stem the anguish with a promise that RED hadn't forgotten the indie guys, and that something would be coming...

This is that something, and we're in for a few days / weeks of leaked photos before the big reveal. ( not to mention endless argumentative posts about specs, upgrade paths, and then bitter disappointment by some that they are still being left behind... but I digress)

And abandoning the fresh brain only 15000$ scarlet dragon? I think many of you are expecting way too much, once again.
Red should keep some logic in the line-up.

Use this to determine the sensor size/crop factor.

They're not just going to magically remake the Dragon sensor with larger pixels.

They will release a camera that's only 4k if they want it to be cheaper. Hence #4k4All
 
I see a closer resemblance to Weapon than Epic/Scarlet here:



That does not really look like a cinema lens mount and the locking ring looks a lot like my 5D. DSMC 2.0 sounds in line with this.

4k is yesterday. I don't see them going back that way either.

Grant - the Dragon sensor at S35 is 5K. So there would be no reconfig of the sensor if they delivered 5K/S35. It would be a very traditional use of the current Dragon tech.

Based on the two pictures we've seen so far - I think the WPN form factor is agreed upon, just in a different material than magnesium or carbon. Speculation from plastic - to aluminum.

Me neither, though Grant makes a good point. If they can make it a 4:3 m43 sensor so I can put those Veydra anamorphics on it, well, that might make it interesting. And I do have a m43 Speedbooster.

BUT... look at the RED AL CANON MOUNT. It looks identical, down to the divots.

I think that it would be less profitable for RED to develop a good 4/3 electronic mount plus 4K 4/3rds sensor than it would be for them to just put their tried-and-tested Canon mount on it and having a 4.8K S35 sensor or whatever.

What divots are you referring to Bruce? I don't see any on the locking ring in the 4k4all image, but I do agree that it resembles the Canon mount.
 
It really does look like the mount is 'fixed' and you won't be able to swap in a different mount. So it's Canon or nothing, or M4/3rds or nothing, or... M4/3 makes sense from a standpoint that it's easily adaptable to everything else including PL.

If you look at the texture of the lens release button itself, it has some little divot-y things. Seems like a column of 4 and a column of 6 or 7 for both.

Left is from the original 4K4ALL image (brightened), right is from RED's Dragon Canon mount image (brightened).

Sorry for the horrible screencaps. I'm at work and due to MPAA rules, my real image editing computer isn't connected to the Internet!

In the first picture, the sensor plane symbol looks to be too far from the mouth to be a M4/3 mouth. That said, RED could have different models with different mouths.

Yeah - but the heater button in my pickup truck is the same as the one in a 'vette, and a caddy...

70% of the performance of Weapon for 30% 0f the cost. We will pay dearly for 8k.

I'm going to go out on a limb and relay a story...

So, I was speaking with 'someone' at RED and I was telling him that I really wished we had something that could "steal" shots for when we didn't have permits, something like the Black Magic Pocket camera. Obviously RED is a superior sensor (MX, Dragon, etc.) but our rigs are impossible to hide in places like LA, without being asked for permits. RED has this cool, 'rebel' image and I was saying, "It would be great if RED designed something that was stripped down and small, yet, cut with RED footage, something like the Black Magic Pocket camera that we could 'steal' shots with... in keeping with the RED military vibe, you guys could call it the 'Stealth' or something." A smile came over him, "Well... you never know what we might have in store." This was about six months ago.

By judging the size of the mini-mags and the cage being just bigger than that... hmmm... could this be the camera the guy didn't 'confirm nor deny'? (I'm hoping!!!!)

Sounds cool - and wouldn't it be nice... But the picture makes it look to be the same size as WPN.
