  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED One slammed in Feb issue of AC?

Who is Jeff Kaye? Did someone else do a DVD on the RED and I don't know about it?

I did do a segment you described in mine as well...

Hmmm... I'm confused.

Jay Kelley

was wondering the same... did a search. nothing

Well holy fuck, THat was the entire article in like 1/10th the word count. Don't let my editors see that! I like going on long verbose rants just to benefit from the online impaling I can then receive in user forums.

Thanks Gavin for getting the point.

:-)

Ha, Deal! I'll keep it a secret from your editors just so long as you keep my post away from the AC copyright lawyers. ;)

Hey Bruce,

This last one's news to me - do you just mean that when the image is zoomed in you simply can't see the dropped frame counter on the screen/EVF (as well as all the other info like histogram etc)? Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know you can no longer record while the image is zoomed in (I remember finding the zoom-in-while-you're-recording feature quite handy for checking sharps mid-shot & was a bit miffed when that feature got dropped), so logically it would be hard not to notice the dropped frame counter? Or do you mean there's some kind of bug that disables or messes with the dropped frame counter whenever you hit the zoom button?

He's not referring to the image zoom where you magnify it to check focus, but rather the monitor zoom on the LCD, which you access by pressing the right-hand round button on the LCD.
Page 15 of the Ops guide for Build 21.4.1 describes it as:
"switches display between Video plus Frame Guides and Menus, to Video plus Frame Guides only"
When you lose the menus, you also lose the dropped frame counter.

I'm pretty sure julian was referring to you Jay.

Other than that miscue, he had a great post with some solid points.

Sorry Jeff.... I mean Jaye!

I am mildly dyslexic.... I really thought I had it right this time (didn't heed the little warning voice that said - check the DVD cover). Yes, it was your DVD, not Jeff Kayes (who the heck is Jeff Kaye anyway?).

Loved the DVD by the way Jeff....sorry.. JAY!! (dammit... work brain work!!!!).... Aaaarghhhhhh.......

Ha! It's no problem Julian! Frank was right, your post was first rate!

Thanks for clearing that up, Stephen. Just to clarify though, doesn't the LCD zoom function affect just the LCD? Or does it also slightly zoom the EVF image in as well (if so I've never noticed that personally, which is surprising because focus pullers are always using that feature to jump in slightly mid-shot to check sharps - I would've thought I'd noticed that and find it slightly annoying whilst operating??)

Guess what footage just came in for me to pull greenscreens from today? Shot by a reasonably famous DP.

Underexposed 2K footage shot with tungsten lighting at RC28.

And the best part: NOT A SINGLE SHOT AT 120FPS.

Not to get off-track here, but why would you want greenscreen footage to be at 120 fps? Do you mean that it's supposed to be delivered at 120fps and he shot it at 24? Or that you want a smaller shutter angle so there's less motion blur? I can see how that would be better for keying, but then you've got the choppy look of the small shutter angle, which seems like too much of a trade-off. Also, at 120fps, he'd have to shoot in 2k windowed mode, which is less resolution -- wouldn't you demand 4k?

I think the point being made is that 2k mode on the RED was used unnecessarily. Normally you shoot at 4k. If you need to record more than 30fps you drop to 3k and if you need to go up to 120fps you go to 2k. If you don't need the fps, you don't drop the resolution. That resolution was dropped without someone needing the high fps is a sign of poor camera operation judgement. I think that is the point being made.

Oh I get it! I thought he was complaining that there weren't any shots at 120 fps in general. It all makes sense now, thanks!

Maybe they dropped their 35mm lens on the floor and it broke and they only had a 16mm spare :)

That's not true according to this http://www.icgmagazine.com/wordpress/2010/01/06/the-red-planet/
unless you know the man personally. Doesn't sound like a man who disliked it. Wasn't enraptured with it either, and preferred film but said he "liked the experience" and it "worked out very well."

Also from same article: Though Burgess says he liked the experience, he’d hardly call himself a RED convert. “It’s not a process cinematographers are in love with,” he says. “I’d still rather shoot everything anamorphic and run it through the lab. But that’s the world we live in now.”

I don't Mr. Burgess but I do know Allen and Albert.

It isn't that there is an established/old-school conspiracy, but that we are human. Not just writers, also readers. Nobody "hates" Red. Digital is going through the same growing pains anything else that -- is -- had gone though. Since Red evolves at a different speed the pains will be more intense, as well as shorter lived.

That people aren't overly concerned with the credit due to a company in a cinematography publication shouldn't surprise anyone. However, many of us will remember to thank Jim for being such a wise man by introducing modularity, firmware updates, and RED RAW.

I have always known that HDD's were reasonably reliable if not hammered and knocked about, however, Chris's article did raise an interesting point (which I had not heard about before).

specifically: loud noises (e.g. thumping music) or even overly loud dialogue (shouting?) leading to dropped frames on the HDD units. With this in mind, just how risky is it shooting with an HDD in less than ideal (quiet, still) conditions? Should one just stick with CF's to totally avoid the problem or can one reasonably rely on the HDD for most lo-noise minimal movement shooting and switch to CF for the dicey stuff? What in users opinions and experience constitutes the fine-line between reliable HDD use and the danger zone of sending too much vibration to the read/write head?

I'm just trying to get a gauge of how much of a problem this is and the varying scales at which it occurs depending on shooting conditions.

I use the Red Drives about 90% of the time with no real issues. If playback is too loud or too bassy on set, I'll sometimes point the speakers away from the camera and that helps a lot. You just need to be aware of the issue and keep an eye out for it. If the problem is causing too many dropped frames, we'll just switch to CF cards.

I've actually never worked with an EVF. It was backordered for the longest time, and once it became available, the Bomb had been announced, so the company I work with is in wait-and-see mode.

Perhaps someone who has some experience with it can chime in for sure, but I think the LCD zoom function should just affect the LCD, and it has certainly never affected the HD-SDI preview out.

The LCD zoom function only affects the RED onboard LCD.
