  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Where are you guys getting this info?

Hi everyone.

I am 3 months out from getting my camera, and for months I've been reading this message board trying to stay up on what's happening. But you guys are coming up with technology and solutions that I've never heard of. A recent example is SDK. I've never heard of this until about a week ago on this board. Where are you getting information that relates directly to the RED yet has never been posted on this forum before? I feel like there's a thick manual or How-To web site out there that I don't know about. Do you ask colleagues in related fields? Where does this knowledge come from and how do you even know to ask?

This forum is it...

The SDK has been an on and off topic since RED first started taking reservations. People were asking for an SDK before RED ever announced an SDK. Jim announced such a thing with developer support well over a year ago, said it would be coming... It pops up here and there. Now the alpha release is very close, like in the next few days.

The info is all here, you just have to search. A lot of various solutions, workflow approaches, etc.. are discovered the old fashioned way -- keep trying things until you find something that works. Many people have shared their findings here.

It's easy to miss stuff, even if you check often. The SDK (software development kit) has been spoken about for months on the boards, but usually not in a direct way, as in you won't find an old post title about it. It just ends up in other posts about workflow or Adobe etc.

I think it also has to do with your background and knowledge base. If you aren't familiar with the terms, they can slip by for a while where for others they instantly trigger great interest.

This has been the case for me. I've learned volumes from this list as most of my knowledge is in software/editing/post, all the shooting terms, issues, situations and so on have been phenomenal.

Others probably have an inside ear at Red through beta testing or early adoption.

Cheers,

Jim

We just spend 10 hours a day on the frikkin' forums.

If you were wondering why all of those REDusers haven't shot those short films and features they promised that they would when they got the camera, the reason's right here:

1. sit down at computer, load Final Draft, write 3 lines of a scene...

2. have temporary scriptwriting discipline breakdown / lapse of focus moment...

3. oh, hang on, let me take a quick 5 min break and see if there's any new comments from Jim or Jarred buried in page 56 of that thread I was reading yesterday...

4. Oh damn... that was a long 5 mins.

It's addictive fun because the RED team is as crazy as we are and actually bothers to read all of the customer comments.

At least when our scripts are done in 20 years' time it'll be a breeze to shoot because RED will have an ironclad camera and workflow due to listening to feedback ;)

Personally I combine this with a day job that involves quite a lot of rendering (no, NOT being a Final Cut Pro editor but doing movie trailer graphics, haha) so that gives me another excuse... bring on more of those 4K finishes please, noble clients!

Work in progress, bleeding edge, moving target: choose your cliche. This is the place to get the latest RED intelligence and act on it. :ninja:

Reduser is the Rumor Mill in effect.......

Some of us asked half the questions discussed on reduser.net back in December at LART but I work with the Red Camera / Raw Data at least twice a weeks on various jobs.

I just finished a 2 camera E-40 f/ Akon Music Video yesterday....

Of course many criticisms leveled at the forums are valid. And you can often get a bunch of conflicting advice, even though it's all well meaning.

Just don't fall into the trap of thinking that there's nothing valuable on the forums. Or that the information on here is impossible to wade through. Simply not true.

The trick is to use the forums without spending every waking moment on them. Personally, I've gotten a lot better. I limit my forum visits to only ten times a day.

Well, I appreciate the knowledge that is shared here. Many times it's hard to assimilate the info without a camera to reference as I glean a new tidbit off the board. Hopefully when I get the camera I'll be able to read a new discovery and look at it in relation to the camera and it will make a little more sense.

Thank you to everyone going through the hard R&D and posting their findings for everyone else to learn from.
