  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red One On a DJI Ronin?

I did not take any photos. We had to shoot with the magic hour so we were more concerned with testing to be sure that everything was good.
I'll ask to the rest of the crew if someone took a picture.
I put the battery down the camera with a lot of gaffer tape to the red bottom plate, I think adding weight in the bottom helped with the balance.
The R1 with the battery, monitor, lens and the gravity one was heavy as hell, so I think it is essential to use an easy rig or something similar with the R1 and any gimbal.

Benjamin. . . did you use an EasyRig on your tests? If not, that could explain a lot!

Stephen

Yes I used a Easyrig + Serene + Gravity One.
I was sitting in the back of a pick up following a woman walking towards the camera, the road was a colonial stone street and the easyrig stabilized a lot the movement but the director wanted it to be almost like a dolly.

Love to see the footie.

Thanks.

Great set up shot! I wonder how much the Ronin actually added to that set-up though. I mean, I would think it would have been quite smooth using just the Flow-Cine gear.

I work for a rental company and we rent out a Ronin set-up... and I own a R1. We're due to receive the Ronin extension arms soon, so I can test the set-up once I've got all of the parts. It's likely to be weeks before the extension arms arrive, though.

Admittedly, so far we've just rented the Ronin out with 5D, Black Magic cameras or a Scarlet/Epic. That's all people have asked for so far - although just today we had a customer run a Sony F7 on the Ronin. I'll hear the feedback tomorrow as they were using their own Ronin; we provided the F7.

This will be incredibly helpful information Stuart!

Thanks much.

I own a Gravity 1 with easyrig 600 then spoiled myself by adding a serene arm recently. Serene is not absolutely necessary, but it helps. I purchased G1 because of its payload capability - up to 38lbs if I'm correct. Purchased to shoot a doc, and have to say at high fps the footage is spectacular. No image stabilization needed!! Really remarkable. Has a more handheld feel about it. Ronin and Movi rigs give a gliding sensation much like a Steadicam. Something to think about if you're considering the Ronin. At 24-30fps is another story. It's gunna take some practice. You can see every bounce and mistake. I met Flowcine's Peter at nab this week and he advised putting more weight on the bottom of the camera, and practice, practice, practice. He also told me of a South African chap who took a year to master the G1. Interesting, I shot a Daily Planet Future Tech episode about the Ronin in February, and the DJI rep told me that once you get near payload capacity you really start to challenge the Ronin (and the Movi) so you're really not getting the benefit of the rig. So R1 at 10lbs, plus lens, plus monitor, battery and whatever else you want and you're beyond Ronin's abilities. Ok, lastly, cost of my rig: G1, Easyrig, and Serene is around $10K. Can't use G1 without easyrig. And, talking to Ronin users they prefer to work with easyrig, too, cuz after an hr or 2 of holding all that and you're cooked! Not to mention off to the chiropractor. LOL. Hope this was helpful. Once I'm done with doc I'll post shots.

REDUser Jeff Harkavy is going to have some really big news for RED One users wanting to use their Ones on the Ronin, but I won't spoil his fun.

Suffice it to say that I think you'll all be pleased. I was just glad that Jeff answered my call for a RED One in LA and that DJI was so helpful with the tests!
