  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ONE M-X Sensor Upgrade Program

I'm currently saving for my first camera from RED. If I have enough for the R1 before the Scarlet is released, and providing we aren't within weeks of a definate release date then I'll buy the R1. With every passing week it's starting to feel more and more that with the huge demand for sensor upgrades, and probable impending stampede for the 2/3rds scarlets that the sooner I jump on the RED train, the better

However, what I still do not comprehend, is how there cannot be a rough guess as to a schedule of the sensor upgrade program. To me, and my simple mind, it seems like a simple math equation to give an estimated time table.

because it is a completely new process. The upgrade is not simple by any means, it depends on alot of new parts, fabrication, sensor packaging, calibration, circuit board manufacturing, a whole new building and team to get in the groove of working together, and alot of stars to align.

Just like anything new.. there is a learning curve, and you are always slower learning something new than when it becomes second nature. We are somewhere in the middle of that right now, and with the machine failure, it put a pause on that whole process.

Give us a couple more weeks to land on a schedule.. because right now we honestly just do not know.

We could lie to you and make something up.. but then you likely will just end up being even more disappointed, and we would end up looking pretty dumb :)

And I will simply wait. From September onwards I will have less time for production work and until then there will be no Scarlet (at least not for me). So I just wait and let the others report about how the Scarlet works and then decide what to do. Until then I might get a VDSLR as an intermediate HD-source. Not perfect but I need a new photo camera as well so that's fine. The new Ti2 (550D) looks like a bargain that fits the profile perfectly.
I want RED to take their time and do a perfect job. I would just like to hear more about the development process. That'd be fun (although unrealisitic unless we keep the competitions eyes and ears shut).

That I can understand and appreciate. Thanks for the info.

Not wishing to second guess RED's (or anyone's, really) own estimates of scarlet/epic production but i think most are agreed now that scarlet is very unlikely to appear in the store before september (certainly to non-R1 owners anyway). They clearly have their hands full right now, so it's whatevers available from RED whenever I can afford it from now on.

EDIT: I guess the relevance to this thread is that take into account an upgrade programme potentially incorporating some 7000 R1's with unknown factors affecting its schedule, an R1 purchased now is still going to be late in the upgrade queue but given the massive interest in the epic/scarlets, i'd imagine the upgraded R1 will come sooner

I plan on getting my RED MX'd ASAP. no offense to RED but I am not thinking EPIC will be ready til mid summer at least and def no Scarlet til fall.
This is just wild assumption on my part and I hope to be so wrong it hurts.

Hey Jarred,
don't get too bummed out! Everyone demanding M-X yesterday is GREAT news! Imagine if you guys had announced it, everyone yawned and you got 3 orders? :-).

These are good problems to have, Red is kicking ass. Moving forward and blazing new trails always involves getting a few thorns in your hands and legs (ah yeah, a great NW homily)

Thanks Shawn... the encouragement, specially from you (who never lets us get away with anything), means a lot to me.

Everything you guys are doing is spot on. it's the moving target schedule-wise thats the bummer but I know it is certainly not for lack of trying, wanting, doing your best to make it happen. Delays are great news when they mean more innovation and a better eventual product.

thanks for diving in head first without a helmet :)

In regards to the M-X upgrade program, I think the safest bet for everyone wondering where they are in the schedule, or how close it will be to Epic release, etc. is to wait for that email to land in your mailbox and at that moment see where things stand for you from a business perspective. If you receive it today for example, based on the information that has been released about potential timeframes for Epic/Scarlet releases, see if that gives you an appropriate amount of time to recoup the money on this upgrade. The way I see it, we just have to understand the complexity of what is going on here and never lose sight of the fact that Red is still a young company, still getting their processes smoothed out,and at the same time inventing a whole bunch of new stuff which requires new processes. I say live in the moment. When something becomes fact, i.e you receive an email that says your M-X upgrade is ready and the camera will be turned around in 7-10 days, then that's when you make a decision on whether it's worth it. The reality is, if they gave you a rough schedule, that's all it would be and won't change when that email actually lands.

In regards to Epic, I am not putting any kind of schedule on this for my business. I know it will get done. I know it will rock. But right now - it's not a product. Either is Scarlet. The R1 is something I have in my hands. It's something I can upgrade to M-X. Epic and Scarlet are cameras that when they do materialize and my number is called, will be new options to consider. They are extremely complex machinery. I expect them to take some time to get right. I expect delays, because honestly I believe that Jim is demanding more of them in terms of performance, reliability, and the shelf-readiness of them. I suspect they are less likely to give in to demands from the community to announce schedules and force the cameras out before they are ready. And I agree with this approach. There are high expectations on these new cameras. Much higher than first time around. They need to get it right. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately in some people's cases, Red is still keeping the community aware of products they are developing. For some of us, we like seeing where things are going. For others, perhaps this has grown old or new potential customers haven't been around since the beginning and expect that when something is announced it will ship soon after. Either way, I think this process requires patience and it requires smart business models. For me, I can plan for it on the side, but it's not something that I've attached a delivery date on. When it's available, I'll react.

In the meantime, I need to make some money and have fun with the R1.

you make the bed

you make the bed

all this frustration and belly aching comes from the fact

*you were not ballsy enough to jump in when Red's plan was announced. or
*you were snoozing and didn't know what was happening.

Your MX will come according to YOUR past DECISION of R1 purchase timing.
You got no one to blame.
I was snoozing and my number is somewhere #1900 and #2300. I will wait for my turn. However we are still making the killing on our two R1 without MX upgrade. Thank you very much.

Epic is late because Red has to come up with lot better camera than original plan due to all new competitor Red has created with original Red 1. We all benefit from what Red has created in this industry. Epic will come when it's ready. Isn't this crystal clear?

So my friends just chill. Grin and bear! We are late comer to the party.

Jim, Jarred, Red...

Much gratitude that it's even POSSIBLE to send my camera in for an upgrade. I can't imagine complaining about the schedule or any delays.

Much love.

Jarred,
Is it possible to get one of the used sensors put in my RED currently sitting dead, then ship it back to get the Mysterium-X Sensor when my number is called?

I'll be glad to pay for the bundle up front, as well as a repair fee and rental fee for the used sensor. Not having my RED available and making a payment is pretty painful. Any solution is better than where I am right now.

You never know until you ask, so it's worth a shot.

How did you kill your old sensor? And do you know that's the issue and only problem?

The camera had been used quite a bit for months with no issues, then we went to Miami for a shoot and booted the camera the night before the shoot and the LED on the back just flashed at us and the camera would not boot up. I sent it to RED and they said that the sensor board was burned in several locations due to the meta data cable being pinched....only relaying what I was told.

I'll have RED remove the meat data cable when it's repaired. Someone said I was over reacting but they are not in my shoes.....2 months out of warranty, dead camera....it's coming off.

Wtf is a meta data cable? Is that the little cable inside the lens mount? If so, have you ever changed the mount?
