  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Mysterious SKULL

I'm talking about the general shipment David, which was in 2014 ;) :

You're welcome ;) About the body upgrade, of course they will! They upgrade sensors today even with a "much larger customer base", so why would they not upgrade bodies?

OK, but the technology is 2 years old.

The performance loss came from something Jim or Jarred said a while back. A few were questioning why the DR kept reducing from what looked like a Stouffer wedge of 18+ stops, then to 16+ in camera and then at the CML 2014 test it was looking less than the Alexa (not so much in 2015 though).

The Dragon and their previous sensors were late from memory, so we are close in on the expected next sensor. However, I think it is likely we will see additional camera/s.

Now the upgrade thing, one thing we have learned that upgrading a camera can be problematic compared to buying a new one. Unless they simplify the upgrade to drop in a black box, it is not that simple, and environmentally not as good as reusing the entire camera rather than throwing away the most complex part of it.

RED don't telegraph their moves anymore, so if they're announcing something at NAB, they've got to be aiming at delivering it within about a year. IMO there's no way they're going to announce a new camera/sensor to replace the current Dragons based on that kind of time-frame. New modules and partial upgrades for enhanced features or functionality, sure, but not a whole new camera.

However, it's no secret they've got a large format camera in the works, which was originally proposed as part of the same camera line-up that included the Epic and Scarlet models. Someone posted a picture of it further back in the thread.

Re-edit: don't you love auto spell correction/predictive text, "their previous sensors", becomes" they previous seen hair".

Yes, we "start" speculating then "stop", then he "starts" us speculating again till we "stop" then he starts us speculating again, you guys still haven't got it about how that big red button could be used :)

I'm taking it easy, been around pre-release speculation before, it will come when it comes, I can spend ten times less effort accessing it if I want to buy it, otherwise a glance and I'm off.

Sorry for re-hashing this, but curiosity got the better of me again.

I don't know much about wireless broadcast technology. Is it even possible for that thing in the picture to be a module for the reliable transmission of 6K video (with audio)?

If so, does that mean the SSD module on the other side of the camera can be removed altogether (#thinisin) and the data recorded on an SSD elsewhere? And if so, what other hardware would be involved? Would there have to be a newly designed stand-alone receiving unit? Would the camera itself have to be modified or have something else added to it (for example I notice there are no screw holes on the current camera body for that unit to attach to in the way it's pictured), or would it require a new shell/body altogether? Anyone know how it might all work if it is in fact an add-on/modification enabling a fully wireless-output-capable brain?

Les,

When you Facetime from an Ipad to someone else half way around the world - you get a very usable Video and Audio.

And so I would say Yes - it is possible for module to transmit audio and video from the brain / and receive commands wirelessly.

If a wireless transmission system sent 1/4 of X resolution in real time -> 1/16 of the R3D data rate .. it would require a the wireless tranmission of <150 Mbits/second.

Currently wireless systems (802.11ac Wave-2 / Beamforming) can already send > 2Gbits/second.

Which video codec to use ... that might be $6KK question.

AJ

I don't expect it to stream 6k so I wouldn't pull off my SSD in anticipation. You could transfer 6k frames or short files no doubt.

I forgot, there is a wcibsumer wireless HD standard that uses something like 36Gb/s, but I forget, I've mentioned in the last.

I read an old post from Jarred saying there's a reason for the future why RED is moving to the minimags. skull may be why. It may truly be a new camera... Or a new housing for Dragon. Interesting.

I have been driving around with W for the last 2 nights all night long in Downtown Los Angeles testing random new things. I was having so much fun I kept telling myself " ok just one more shot " over and over and over again until the sun came up.

The good old "prototype camera hidden under a cardboard box with a lens sticking through a hole" worked like a charm.... managed to completely avoid the cops.

Touchscreen control from the dash.

Probably need to sleep before I say too much :)

Sleep???

is it like just after 8:00pm local? I didn't think you slept :smile5:

Soooo new prototype. look like a few guesses on here hit the mark.

I was going to make a comment about Jarred's vehicle and the box in the back, touch screen on the dash; not conspicuous at all. ;-) But then I read that he is driving around Los Angeles. He probably fit right in!

Prototype camera? Suggests a whole new model to me.

P.S.... is that a vintage International Scout you're driving?
