  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Exactly. I never thought these are screws despite the cross groove. And I still don't :)

besides that: the Side SSD has a new button layout, too. So....
 
I had to skip my RED One upgrade to Epic because I put my money into a personal project, and I JUST got back into RED with a Dragon. And now Skull/Weapon has no front fans, and it's tinier, and it's probably super-light, and it does really well shooting in LA at night. Exciting! Must own. Anybody know a good plasma donation center?
 
Thinner in one direction, bigger in another?

Form factor of how you hold the camera is vital, so maybe they are making it better in some respects. Bigger means more opportunity for processing.
 
I do hope the form factor remains small. Some copycats have tried making their camera like Alexa while others have tried to stay small like DSLR or GoPro. Red Epics are at the top of the line for small form factors (just heavier). I'm truly hoping they stay SMALL or offer both. Perhaps a module for those that want big shoulder-mount style. For my indie work, I'd prefer thinner, smaller (or the same size), cooler (meaning low to no fan), and definitely LIGHTER!!

MX will be EOL.
You can of course sell your MX and buy the new camera or just carry on using the MX.
The MX will still continue to work just fine into the future. :)

Not really, Jarred said that the upgrade from MX to Dragon will be ending in the summer, but he also mentioned that MX could upgrade to Weapon, because that is what's going to be the new upgrade path. But you won't be able to get the discount for weapon if you don't upgrade to Dragon before NAB.

Do you mean there will be some kind of a trade in from MX to weapon instead of the usual upgrade line Christoffer?

It may increase from reports, but even a change of 1/8th in a dimension can make a handy difference on designs. When I draw up designs even just minor ratio changes enhance the visual appeal, and not so large changes enhance hand ability. But if they are changing a dimension for handability, they have to account ffor large to smsll hands, like in Asia, otherwise they can be wasting their time. A lot of people make the mistake of judging things by what is on hand, their hsnds. What is important is positioning, workflow comfort, then more comfort and looks (which might sell more).

My suspicion is that they will return to the look of the R-1, but with perhaps a detachable wider front with a lens mount and wireless to send what the lens is seeing to the body for recording in Redcode... maybe even in .RED.

I personally loved the shape of that camera but embraced the Epic box because it was lighter. I suspect they have figured ways to make the old R-1 form factor lighter, or if not, then the wireless lens detachment becomes the light weight version of the camera.

Plus, they can go back to putting more audio mounts on the side like the R-1 if indeed they are reverting back to that longer slender style.

If what I say be true, then I hope they will create a laser projector module to utilize the new brain for exhibition.

ThinIsIn could just refer to a really thin IO module with XLR and additional SDI I/O but still be attached to a slightly larger body. Both could be true.

Yes there was an upgrade from RED ONE M to Epic ($19.5k value trade in, insane deal) it was just a lower trade in value then the RED ONE MX, but I haven't gotten the impression there will be anything like this for Epic MX to WEOPON. I don't have the resources or necessary need to go DRAGON before June or whatever so one can only hope. Otherwise I guess I will finally be stepping out of the upgrade path.

That said, the Epic MX is an awesome camera and is fully capable of giving you beautiful images to tell a story.
 
I remember Jarred saying on FB they've managed to do some astonishing things with the red Dragon sensor so perhaps it isn't medium format but a boosted up Dragon sensor.
I kinda hope so I can't afford to shift to MF.

As you said, Epic X will still continue making beautiful images as will the RED One (which gets an upgrade each time a new color science comes out) and also the (soon-to-be'-) common Dragon.

Yes it would be nice to upgrade to the Weapon if it is more than a bell-and-whistle upgrade. But by controlling one's own camera envy for the present, when things get better one can get back on the upgrade train. At least, I think one could since many current Dragon owners were not early adopters, yet they are getting the early adopter treatment.

So while things may not be optimal at present, there is the possibility of becoming so in the future.

What would be the ultimate upgrade from Dragon, at least for me:

1- surpassing the still image quality of my 1DX, but at 100fps and at 20 megapixels, at least.
2- faster boot up. No need for sensor warming up.
3- I know of the capacity of custom LUTs on the current Epic, but would love "picture styles" developed by Graeme and top photographers/ cinematographers/grading artists for jobs that require a fairly quick turn around of footage.
4- full support for all leica M lenses. Yes, dont own a single one but would aim for a kit if it was viable!
5- Low Light with nois at 6400 iso equal to what we get now at 800. I love natural light, and am quite happy with my Dragon LLO oLPF, but would love to be able to get that "natural, night shot" at gorgeous 100fps.

6- I lust for the Carbon Dragon but can't afford it. Jarred, Red Team, give us a dream path to Carbon Weapon withou having to sell an organ! :)

Much of the reason other camera companies that do the large tethered umbilical cord solution is to be as small as the current DSMC Style bodies.

There's no real reason to do a corded solution like that with Red cameras with this general body type.
