  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Mysterious SKULL

Here is my bet- Wireless Universal Protocol.

Sort of like the HotLink- but hardwired into the side handle location. Allows iPhone Control via the software created by Michael (and other new RED Software). Great for Gimbal operators, Drone pilots and A/Cs.

I bet $1.

lol I hope it's not that... Seriously small market for that, and no use on narrative work. I hope they are thinking more broad in terms of functionality and not a niche product. 1000fps would be a gamechanger, especially if they do it in full 6K. That would have a much wider use and would make the Dragon more viable for many more uses. My hope at least.

1000 fps been around for a long time, I doubt that a well known fashion photographer would say that he has seen the future if it was a high speed camera feature, no?

I don't think it's specific to photographers. I think Jarred met with him while visiting New York and just showed the new thing to him. So I wouldn't be too sure it's something intended for photographers.

It this is something that the MX does not have the horsepower for.

So this is either:

- Something that needs extra RAM
- or Extra sensor refresh rate
- or The new format R3D files
- Or something else that was installed in each camera during the Dragon upgrade ...

You are gonna be in pole position for whatever you guys are talking about with #44. Then #599 will get to play .

You however are best to give #668 a bit of love while you still can.....

Happy to have the pole at #41 CF.

Very intriguing.

Thank you very much

That's definitely a W. I doubt it stands for wireless though. Hmm... The only "W" word that I can think would fit could be "Weapon". RED Weapon?

Maybe it could be for high-speed... Maybe something totally unexpected... Maybe it's not even a W... :)

It looks to be an exciting NAB this year.

I do think it might be "WUP" or Dragon Wing Upgrade. Considering Jarred posted the "glad I bought a Dragon" note, the upgrade aspect seems legit and likely Dragon only.

I was off the scent for a minute for sure. But I see things that make sense. Either way I'm making some dough for when this thing is ready to go. It sounds like it's going to be something a lot of people will want and will likely be useful for all sorts of productions. Hope to test it out if possible. If not, I'll happily wait until NAB To discover what these images truly mean.

So you folks who don't believe one of these is a wireless accessory aren't expecting Red to release a proper RedLink at NAB... after all of the complaining about the way the developer kit terminates the back end?

I don't think a "proper RedLink" is enough to have Jarred heh heh heh-ing at us, Scott - a non-terminated Redlink would just be the evolution of an existing product, which already has a third-party solution in the Hotlink - and Redlink also works with MX, which somewhat rules it out as a uniquely Dragon-specific product.

He sounds ready to unleash some crazy Dragon goodness.

We may very well see a non-terminated Redlink at NAB - but I don't think that is what this newflangled thingamajig is....

I would be seriously shocked if ANY camera upgrade did not INCLUDE wifi - that's rather obvious IMO - since you can stick a wifi radio in ANYTHING - the more important question is - WHAT ELSE?

CF 69 A.K.A. Ryoku Chan is waitng for its Wings, Warp, Wide... Well... IT WILL BE GOOD...

The "W" may stand for Wu-Tang, 'cause it's nuthing ta f*** wit! :jacked:

(on a more serious note: please don't close the EpicMX-to-Dragon upgrade (yet), this would break my heart)

I'm quite aware of that coolness Matt, and you may be right :-) But I expect the THC mini to use the same radio frequencies as it's big brother. So I'm hoping for the THC Mini and this new piece to deliver to NAB, wireless Canon lens control in a form factor that we are used to and without dangling wires of other solutions.

Like Mark though i'm wondering "What else?" Like Elizabeth I am intrigued by the Dragon exclusivity. MX cams apparently lack the processing power to support the live streaming of the network adapter, and that has me curious about wireless video. That is on the fringe I'm thinking... But it may be possible.

Again, I think the "wifi works on MX" logic holds. If they make a Dragon-only Wifi accessory, that would be very, very, short sighted of RED.

Yikes...if the MX to Dragon Upgrade is going to end...Im hoping theres a 3-6 month window after NAB for everyone to get their orders in! Considering the upgrade cost has risen to $12,500, MX owners may be facing a particularly challenging moment and hill to climb...

However, I have faith in all things RED, and am sure they'll have a fair and well thought plan to the upgrade phase out!

Its been a mystery to my who 802.11 has been missing from the camera since it was designed given red mote needs a wireless link and 802.11 is a wide spread technology.

Hotbox works just fine and pleased to have a couple here.

As wireless TX and RX 2.4Ghz modules are very small these days, our RTMOtion kit works over 1.7Km ! would be be possible to have a dual unit for 802.11 using control from hand held devices iPhone/iPad etc running Fool Control and perhaps other software in future and also long range control over 2.4Ghz too ? for bespoke control devices ?

Robert,

IMHO : I think Reds use of a Skull to indicate 'proximity danger' predates Intel's use of a skull for cool marketing.

Example : Red Tactical Top plate 2.0

As this new Skull is much bigger .... maybe Red have incorporated a maser so the Brits can have tea break's on set? :-)
