  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Mysterious SKULL

I'm guessing it's an uncompressed raw side modul for photographers, with flash sync and all :)

Anything photography related does not make me gladiboughtadragon.

It's GOT to be something useful to a larger portion of people. If not then this thread is going look a little silly and a prime example of how not to promote a product. Why tease everybody with a niche product? Doesn't make sense.

If its a skull, its surely something you drop a brain "into". My guess is its an atachable studio body/chassis with a hardware accelerator that allows for higher frame rates (1000fps), higher ISO (5,000 clean), and includes a Meizler Module level set of inputs/connectivity.

But its only for Dragon - not for MX - which is why MX owners should upgrade fast.

We need a module like that like with a single SDI 4k out that will let us participate in live broadcasting, narrowcasting or whatever but live.

Yikes...if the MX to Dragon Upgrade is going to end...Im hoping theres a 3-6 month window after NAB for everyone to get their orders in! Considering the upgrade cost has risen to $12,500, MX owners may be facing a particularly challenging moment and hill to climb...

However, I have faith in all things RED, and am sure they'll have a fair and well thought plan to the upgrade phase out!

In the past when there were major changes or "ends" to upgrade paths Red has historically made an announcement and usually that was followed by a 30-ish day window before that upgrade path ended. Also, it appears that camera upgrade paths tend to change/end around November/December. Just observations that might allow you to plan accordingly.

Understood. Thanks for clarity Phil!

My guess that it is a module to increase HFR for Red Dragon ... something only related to Dragon Sensor ... really want this to happen even at burst mode or at Full HD

Don't get your hopes up for a high speed module.
As Jim and Jarred said - quite often I might add :) - high speed needs a different sensor AND different boards. So that means a new brain and no add-on.

If this is an image of a new module that attaches to the body, what could those pins connect to? I'm thinking it's a replacement for the right plate (or possibly a new part that replaces the connectors at the bottom rear of the camera), not just a module that goes in the side-handle slot. Has anyone pulled the right side plate off their Dragon to see if any new connectors were added as part of the Dragon upgrade?

I´m thinking it is a RED optimized gimbal. Makes sense with the skull (camera being inside the skull/gimbal). That thin back-module is something, that extends power, monitoring etc. off the camera to the gimbal frame.

Also a new gimbal (side)-handle grip, is wirelessly connected to the skull-side thing. The wings, which are reffered to, is maybe something new and original when it comes to gimbal design (auto-balancing stuff?!?).

I don't think you would call a wireless-thing-protocol-thingie a Skull. That makes no sense... except if there's something more original and skully-thing about the wireless :)

The most likely theory so far is the larger studio body with less boxy ergonomics and the connectivity that redusers complain about not having, all in one solution. Skull and brain dropped into skull makes sense.

However that rear module looks mighty thin. No help with ergonomics and continues the boxy form factor.

How long till nab?

There's nothing on the current camera body for thirteen of those springy type pins to directly connect with, unless it's concealed beneath the actual body panels. There's a piece of protective tamper-evident type tape under the side SSD module, but I don't think it's got any contacts covered up underneath it.

So whatever that thing is, it needs some kind of interface between it and the current camera if it's supposed to connect via those pins, or it attaches by some other means and is itself something that as yet unknown modules connect to, or it connects to something else entirely, or...lol

Maybe a replacement of the different modules in a new thinner lighter shell module, more connectivity, buttons, touch screen, handle, new thin battery etc. all around. I see some kind of knuckleduster shapes in the first picture too.
