  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Mysterious SKULL

It's entirely possible that RED just has a 'dumb' brain for testing accessory fitting on and we're looking at a basic body cap to cover up the fan hole.

By the way one interesting concept is that the RED is pretty over powered in order to handle 100fps when most people shoot at 24. Maybe we can shut down 3/4 of the chips at 24fps and use like 33% of the power when not shooting highspeed (and therefore not need the fan for gimbal rigs).

I just am trying to figure out what would make a photographer excited about the mystery product. I mean other than it's incredible resolution and dynamic range + colors, what would make a photographer excited?! The OP posted the shot from a famed photographer, so I hardly think he'd be that excited over a wireless module, right? Not sure but it makes things even more confusing on what it could be.

That is part of the reason I'm guessing that it includes wireless video and perhaps the ability to tag and transfer frames wirelessly. In a still photography context that would be great, making DSMC more comparable to DSLR studio systems.

But that seems like it's intended for a very small niche market. People who buy wireless video want a system that can work with any cam, not a specific system only. Just seems like it isn't really meant for the cinema market, but who knows. While Dragon is great for stills, 99.2% of photographers use a system other than RED.

The original question was; what about this would be so exciting to a still photographer?

For still/motion hybrid shooting, tagging the still frame and a range of frames remotely and then transferring only that marked range without touching the camera would also be killer.

If it still seems niché, consider then some broader potential software applications. The original Redlink was a software developer's kit after all. While Mikael and Red have given us interesting things so far I have to wonder who else has been working the kit and to what end. I'm not talking about a simple, generic video transmitter I'm talking about a full robust network connection to Epic. Some of it's beauty is a direct result of it's specificity.

Until this point our discussion was hardware centric. With the right software much more could be done.

What if we could capture a frame accurate HD stream wirelessly, then connect to load only the desired r3d range(s)? That would be great for everyone, still and cinema... No? We could be creating and editing dailies in video village or on the other side of the world before the card even left the camera if the hardware and software combo were frame accurate. Post production would never even have to handle all of the RAW neg. I mean editorial would likely still be pulling selects and ultimately archiving the footage but the entirety of the neg would conceivably never have to be online.

i'm just using my imagination here. I have no idea if the Redlink protocol allows for that, I just presume it would. :-)

One of the largest missing features for photographers is tethered shooting. They're pretty used to wireless cameras going straight into Photoshop/Lightroom for touchups quickly. But I think you're being too narrow in your thinking. I imagine if they are already big RED fans they would geek out over video features as much as the next person.

Yep Matt, This is the point.

......
I see the W everywhere ..... :)

- Wide (dual sensor Dragon) opportunity to refocus in post production
- Wireless Remote (direct connect to your laptop or workstation or World Wide Web )

Jarred !! a little help:Angel_anim::Angel_anim::Angel_anim::Angel_anim:

If they make a DSLR-style Dragon, it'd have to be in-line with DSLR pricing/performance ($3500/ISO3200/~60min RV?), and current Dragon owners would likely be pissed, not happy as Jarred suggested, if it shot 6k motion at speed (24-30fps).

Honestly, I don't put too much stock in people who get a behind-the-scenes look at any upcoming product and say it's the future. Not only is the endorsement biased/forced, but so much could happen before it's launched and/or readily available. It's not like every other camera manufacturer is sitting around waiting.

That said, this is exactly what makes NAB awesome... And yeah, 2 months seems long, but it is the perfect amount for time for lighting the fuse of RED's powder keg!

Wireless recording to a remote redmag / PC would be pretty awesome too. :hurray:

What's the point of another photo camera? Red will never beat Canon/Nikon/Sony at their game.

Heh, text is contextless.... I was actually giving reasons why they wouldn't/shouldn't make a DSLR-style dragon as others were suggesting (some were saying that because Steven Klein is a photographer, it might be photography related -- like a DSLR-leaning DSMC).

I think wifi module is going to happen anyway. Either as a +1/module adapter, or as an updated side handle... or upgraded (internal) antenna... Though it'll be way more expensive than the HotLink, so I'm not sure how successful it'll be (but then again, I don't know how well RED's other products with 3rd party competition sell either.)

what about longer exposures? that would be something that has confounded the engineers for awhile, which would also please a still photographer.... or perhaps the ability to adjust shutter mid-stream, so that you could more easily reset the shutter speed for a still, while capturing video, without having to enter menus to do it - not simultaneously, which is impossible, but with some sort of pushbutton speed which would allow us to toggle from stills mode to video mode and back, etc..

something that would bring the hybridization of stills/video closer to reality without compromising either.

maybe that little side module looking thingie is similar to a canon timelapse controller. intervalometer. TC80N3. that's my guess.

alternatively - I am guessing time travel module - that would be new wings, for sure!

People hype up their hopes so much it's getting out of hand. The image was released with the hashtag "GladIboughtaDragon", so it's clearly something good for the Dragon owners. If it were a new camera, why that hashtag?

My guess, a new nuclear powered battery option that powers the Dragon for 20 years before having to be replaced/recharged.

That makes sense completely. The scull is just a symbol for a nuclear fried user head. Ryan, you nailed it!

As well as proper wireless flash triggering/sync...for single shot. Tethered shooting....etc. So...maybe a still photography module??
