RED Komodo-X

KESSLER CINESHOOTER | Initial Thoughts and Impressions

My Frien,

there are literally people complaining about these things IN THIS THREAD.

Im sorry, I know it can be confusing and hard to keep up with all the information coming out. Those questions are from people that haven't been paying very close attention. Andrew is correct, all of those things I believe have been answered.

People will have complaints because its impossible to make everyone happy, and thats ok. But I think the vast majority of people are really happy with the body of Komodo-X. Especially if you use V-Mounts. Not having to use a battery plate technically means that for me, its a smaller camera with better IO. Thats awesome.

There have been plenty of side by side test already too. CVP as others have mentioned, have done a nice one.

- New Sensor
- Solid DR Improvements

Put my order in for the Komodo-X. I am super hyped about the Pro I/O module. I never ended up getting a battery IO module for my Komodo because I just never liked any of the form factors and cable routing needed and other oddities around them I just always stuck with the Canon batteries since you can easily use the camera all day with a few pairs and would just build out a camera rig for whatever I was doing. Usually just a Tentacle box connected into EXT or if I had the camera on a gimbal just running a little EXT breakout box in a battery slot.
Should be so easy to build out handheld or studio rigs now. Having the DC-in on the module as well as the dedicated power switch for it is perfect.

I'm sure some will want a more compact module but having it extended out should put the battery in a really nice spot for a simple rig to rest against your shoulder and keep it balanced for a top handle setup.

by far my favorite Red camera at launch.

Wasn't expecting some of the heavy duty power options on that module especially the 24 volt.
RED took a good approach with that module.
It covers many bases and the the price is decent as well.

Would have liked a module that would allow 2 more audio inputs (for 4 total inputs) and I'm sure some would have
liked an additional SDI out but the Pro I/O still looks like a well executed option for KX.

Could someone confirm for me whether or not Komodo-X has timelapse / interval recording? And pre-record? ... and at a stretch frame summing / averaging or a way to use slow shutter?

Not finding much on the internet.

Cheers

it can shoot at 1/6th shutter speed. That’s the lowest so far.

not bad! i was considering picking up a use cinema camera, but at this price, the warranty alone is worth the extra grand or two. plus, more quiet, better battery, no lag UI, and smaller. and so many more advantages. like faster playback, 1:1 focus is instant, the red control app if free. media is not EOL.

Yeah,

You would think however that the "PRODUCTION PACK" would at least come with two Batteries and two 2TB Memory Cards. Plus keep the Pro In and Out module and just let it be more expensive. I think RED was maybe trying to keep the price of the "PRODUCTION PACK" under the Price of the V-Raptor S-35 for some reasons.

That sounds smart.

the Basic KX kit is more appealing for me, because i have all the accessories i need.

I think the Standard Kit is resonably priced. But I rather they keep the "Wing Grips" at $120 each and maybe get the option to replace them with the "RED 5-PIN TO DUAL XLR ADAPTER" for $299.Maybe One WING GRIP to Offset the "Outrigger R/S Top Handle" and just let it be a little bit more.I mean why does every package have to come out to a Price of "XX,995" , how about $12,299,$12,399 or $12,499?

My favorite Komodo setup right now is this with GDU left side handle, Red Wing side handle on the right, and compact top handle for mounting monitor and Bright Tangerine 15mm rod mount that can mount to the front of that. For tiny lenses like the 9mm Laowa and Laowa Nanomorphs the top rods are great. And help protect the lens just a bit. Also easy to swap rods down o the GDU arm for larger lenses.

Komodo-X was an easy purchase for me so much of this stuff will be ready to go with the new camera. I ended up ordering a package at about $16k with 4x1TB cards, 2x98wh batteries, 2x49wh batteries, and Pro I/O and a few other things.

I'm running the Komodo X with the 7" RED LCD and really like the weight and balance and clean cable compared with the KOG workflow. Really great stuff there.

I am curious about the autofocus functionality on the big monitor though. The original autofocus beta with KOG was certainly a beta and I forgot about it. Initial testing with KX autofocus has been really exciting and things are moving in a great direction. Hopefully that eye autofocus gets integrated without the need for the phone app soon.

I'm also confused about having to tap on the top LCD to adjust the focus point. Is there going to be a way to integrate this in the RED / SmallHD monitor? It is not a quick or intuitive thing to continually go back and tap the top LCD for AF instead of working directly on the touch monitor.

Yeah I think I am going to wait and see what RED does for 5 or 5.5" display. Jarred has made it pretty clear it's happening but will just take some time. Sounds like lots of overall improvements will be coming to DSMC3 monitor situation soon enough.
The AF on latest Komodo firmware seems pretty decent now but it is very much lens dependent.
