  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Komodo-X

I’m confused as to why some think it’s going to be same size as Komodo now. Jared said if you want it to have more power to do the extra frame rates etc, it would have to be a little bit bigger.

Because he also made the comment about Komodo needing to be the same height and width in your hand. That’s where I extracted it from.

watching your 6 hour live stream, it seemed pretty clear to me that it would be a little bigger than Komodo. But I guess we’ll see. I just hope red announces the END at the same time lol.

Taking it abit further and lining it up with the silver ring of RF and it does look slightly larger.

Look at the size difference in the screws around the mount in the superimposed image. They appear to have substantially different diameters. Yet, the mounts must to be the same size. You need to draw lines the project from the top of the inside of the mount straight out. Repeat this step for the inside bottom of the mount. Align both images so that the lines touch the same points on both cameras. This should yield a close approximation of the actual size; Also both images can remain opaque. Keep in mind, the Komodo-X appears slightly off center in this image.

I think you’re right.

million dollar question is how will it fit in a salty water housing for the original Komodo :drunk: maybe with some button mcguyvering-

This is off. Jarred already confirmed that he would bet heavily that it will be the same height and width as Komodo. A quick play in photoshop reveals the opening for the mount is larger in this image than that on the Komodo.

You are right. I didn't realize that the Komodo mock-up is missing the release button and the mount is bigger than my actual Komodo . So, I have updated it with the Komodo X mount on the Komodo, and now it looks the same height and width as the actual Komodo.

If Phil doesnt truly have one already, and know all the specs... that would be really the most mysterious thing of KomodoX of all.

Much like Raptor, I've been in the void of darkness on Komodo-X. When Jarred showed me Raptor 8K VV it slapped me across the noggin that the camera was so far along and shootable. Similarly here as he was dropping hints, but I didn't expect to see a full fledged Stormtrooper body pop up. I certainly "knew" something was coming throughout discourse and discussion over the last year. Somewhat obvious really.

The key things from chatter online was for a while people were discussing Komodo XL, which sounds like a weird concept and didn't sit right with me. But yeah, if I had to guess specs and a very likely price, I think I'd be within 3-10% of a margin of error.

Outside of the announcement, looking forward to seeing this thing in person. I'd be shocked out of my mind if one or more were at Cine Gear as that would be post announcement. Where there is one Stormtrooper, there are many. Historically that is.

My only grounded take here is this. The key thing for this camera is catering to the "more" of what the majority of Komodo owners today have been requesting. Lots of that here and on social for sure. The other layer is how much of that more plays well with the rest of RED's lineup. Though not exactly made for it, Komodo is very much a lot of people's A-Cam. Komodo-X is only going to empower that mindset and workflow further while also checking boxes further into a utility camera for higher end productions. That's my expectation at least.

Also. Interesting Modules are back in play. Something I enjoyed about DSMC and DSMC2 for sure, but also I do like a lot of the built-in features we have now as well.

This all makes sense. Honestly if they could do Komodo 6K with 90fps, better onboard audio, and some other smaller improvements, I can see the Komodo-X ticking a lot of boxes. If this cam is $10K, it will sell like hot cakes. They won't be able to keep them on shelves. Honestly even 6K 60fps, and 5K 90fps would work. For some reason I see this cam actually selling for $12,500, but who am I to say?

Jarred's latest tease confirms a few things.
- CFexpress (CFx)
- 6K 17:9, likely the same format size as Komodo
- Confirms at least 80fps, which is 2X of Komodo 6K S35

Couple other things in that image to speculate on, but this is the hard info.

Maybe few other things :

- Dimensions seem to be " 4 x 4x 4,5" which is wild..

- Integrated V-lock ?

- "1000 iso" might be a tease for low light capabilities.. A baby Gemini maybe?

I'm obviously extrapolating here, can't wait to hear about dynamic range and image DNA..

The top panel and screen look almost identical to Komodo. But notice the CFx indicator… 80/fps and single battery indicator.

that voltage icon next to the battery is interesting. Accessory power maybe? Or perhaps just a dc-in indicator?

Edit: I also see that while it’s 80fps, it is ELQ

80fps ELQ certainly interesting. Something I'd find super useful for my commercial work. I've not yet dabbled in the world of DSMC3, based off Raptor where would we think the fps would land if switched over to LQ or MQ? 75 fps? 50?

TBH these days with anamorphic being so hot, and the myriad of aspect ratios I need to deliver work in, a 3:2 or 4:3 sensor would be welcomed. The sensor does look slightly narrower than Raptor, but perhaps this is wishful thinking on my part? Or perhaps it's ability to get to 80fps 17:9 could be from a crop of a taller full frame read out? Find out soon I guess.

From someone still rocking DSMC1 Dragon 6K this is the first RED to have really got me considering an upgrade. Exciting times, feels like it's 2014.

For those that were wondering about size:Size comparison

Another one:

btw: this camera starts shipping on Monday. Unless there are major improvements to image quality and dynamic range, then it’s not for me. I’m not a high frame rates shooter. Now if this thing was bringing built in EVND… welp, that would have done it. But I’m feeling like this will largely be a pass for me. A bigger Komodo is not a selling point for me. And better audio is pointless, as I almost never utilize in-camera audio.

Tuesday apparently. He corrected that. But damn, this is happening really fast. And that appears to be a novel take on a Micro-V Mount. Different than Raptor's design, likely same form factor compatibility and also plate compatibility. Body a smidge longer, integrated V-Mount, I/O in a more sensible position. Very interesting.

Wow. So it looks to me like they've basically made an updated Komodo with built-in A-cam features.

Should be good for those who find the Komodo capabilities and features limiting, but who don't want or need the 8K and higher frame-rates etc of the V-Raptors.

Good that they've been able to keep the size down to Komodo levels, except where they've had to add the extra features on.

Just curious now about the actual sensor performance. Keeping it on par with the current Komodo would make it an awesome little package, but if they've managed to extend the range a bit along with the frame-rates, that'd be some nice icing on the cake.

Kudos to RED for responding to the user feedback and filling out the DSMC3 platform like that. What an amazing selection of cameras.
