  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Dragon: Candle and Match Low Light Tests

Matt I don't work with Premiere, I'm an Avid guy. What's the next best application to run it in? After Effects?

hmm. I would probably say in Resolve if you have the OFX version. That would also give you more complete color controls as well. I haven't used it in any other editing software so I'm not the best at answering that question. After Effects would probably work just as well, but I have yet to try it, sorry. My copy of Neat Video is for Premiere only.

Oh it works in Resolve? With the OFX version? Perfect.

BTW I downloaded your quicktime of Phil lighting the match...looks staggering. Feels like I'm watching a Hollywood movie scene, not a test clip. WOW!!!

Yup, OFX works in Resolve.

The clip reminds me of Pirates of the Caribbean for some reason.

Wish I had a 4ktv to watch this stuff on!

I believe this might be because of Phil's beautifully, and restrained, blue back light.

Even indoors moonlight seems to find a way in :)

It's actually a 5600K flashlight diffused and bounced off the ceiling for a bit of rim.

Happy New Year folks! I purchased NEAT VIDEO right after Phil suggested it as a great NR when I asked a few of days ago. Used it in the Light Match clip Phil provided us and: Absolutely amazing plugin. Pushed ISO so much to test the limits...also tested adding a grain to it afterwards to bring back the organic feel because it turns so clean and yet sharp that you start missing the film look...I just did it as a test because I can NR less and maintain the noise but for the heck of testing I went to the extreme. I Also tested the NR with motion since the clip was a 10 sec clip. NR plugins look funny sometimes when subject is in motion. Amazing on all counts...Sharpness retained extremely well.

DRAGON and NEAT together are amazing....MX and NEAT are also very very good together.

No reason to be judging low light performance at this point and focus more on the beauty of all the things Dragon can do. It keeps making more sense what Phil and Toia and Gunleik were doing before not focusing on the Low light comparison when people like me were so concerned about it...Not anymore! :)

Phil... You are a real pro! Ever since I saw Blade Runner about 20 times, back in 1982, I have been
obsessed with back light, and I noticed the blue back light in your tests immediately.

So, what brand etc. is this 5600K flashlight? Is it LED? Did you meter how many FC where hitting you?
At 6400 ISO this tiny amount of light shows up quite effectively. Gone are my days of 500 ASA film.

I think it's called "Task Force". Looks like a light saber. I can take a meter tonight. I honestly can't remember what showed up. I have spent way, way, way too much money on flashlights over the years. They are my dirty secret :) I lit a post apocalyptic piece that I can't show yet shot on my old Scarlet-X with MX at f/1.4 on EF glass purely with flashlights. Still one of the coolest looking things I shot on that cam.

On the medium shot with the candle you'll notice the light meter says "under" and that's exactly how dark that was before lighting that thing up.

PMed you about the loan of an Epic-x if you want to do a side by side comparison. Thanks for sharing your testing, knowledge, and passion with Redusers.

Hey Nick: there's an Avid version of Neat Video too. Yeah, I'm also an Avid guy :)

But I must admit I usually do it in Resolve or Nuke or After Effects because Avid is more for the creative edit for me.

Sounds like you finally got convinced. Welcome to the new year 2014.

I'm thinking the same thing - leave Avid for creative edit, and then use Resolve for final grade, etc.

Happy New Year Bruce!!!

Rodney Charters seems to not have any love for Dragon yet...

Anyone wanna head over to Twitter and join the conversation? Let's keep it civil and not a fanboy attack... https://twitter.com/matthayslett

Back up your words with facts, not nonsense..

Hopefully Mr.Charters gets a chance to use a Dragon and see for himself what it can do! I have to imagine he's just being playful, as clearly a tweeted pic can only say so much.

Looking forward to seeing what he thinks!!!

It angers me as well too, Nick. I'm surprised that a professional like Rodney would make such an uneducated and unprofessional response to a Twitter post of an instagram picture. I actually really like the guy and think he's done some incredible work. Kind of a let down when he posts a comment like that... Guess it gives guys like David Mullen so much more validation for being professional in every one of his responses.

I would love to say I graded it that way, but there is no color info in the flame from what I can tell. That's based though on it's original capture exposure clipping the flame. But from the CML images of Alexa and film I posted above, they don't have any color info either and look very similar...

I certainly appreciate Dave Mullen's wonderful, balanced, nuanced tone!

I just offered to show Rodney my Dragon. He's actually a cool guy, just don't think he's had his hands on the camera yet.

And to be perfectly clear, there is color in the flame and it rolls off into the highlight clip rather naturally. In the motion footage you can clearly see the reds, oranges, and blues on the match.

Eeek. The last few posts in this thread were a bit of a drag to read, but anyone looking at an r3d knows there is a lot there.

Everyone is going to have their preferences though and that's cool, just the same way it's cool that RED is made in the USA.

Lets all all take the high road, Rodney is great at what he does.

Just saying, sometimes it's moments like theses that give reduser a bad wrap. We are here because we love cinematography and we love the tech. Let's post some samples of that colorful flame! :)
