  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Re-grade your footage...

I'm getting the beach ball everytime I click on something in the new redcinex.... macpro quad 12GB ram 8TB raid 5... no other apps running and a recent restart.... Any thoughts to make it faster?

danka!

( I know.. I know... Rocket.... but until then? )

If you're viewing the footage at full res you will get a lag if you don't have Rocket. Get rocket?? I'm viewing at 1/8 ( which blows ), but it's better than getting the beach ball!

Frank I share your Joy. This new Redcine-X or should I say the FlLUT and combined with lift gamma gain has actually changed my perception of the Red One. True we all got great results in Color, and AE, but what the company never understood was the deep gut wrenching feeling of leaving the very much appreciated sexy rawness of the R3D and loosing resolution to a different weaker Codec. The Only good conform and grading solutions are, Speedgrade, Scratch, Avid DS, Quantel etc. These are great programs and really nobody wants to be a colorist or negative cutter overnight (those fine folk are experts at their craft) but rather out ability to show clients and audiences that we shot with what we consider one of the most advanced imaging machines in the 21st Century. We want the actual footage of our sweat and blood to look as good as we had promised our wives, clients etc .
The Software angels at Red have finally heard our prayers and given as the three lords of the rings Lift gamma Gain. Now we wait patiently whilst they give us the rest of the package (the color range selector, a precise footage color grid, RGB curves, RGB parade, a vector-scope monitor, more video and Audio tracks, a split screen monitor to show grades before and after, and an SDK for third party plugins).

The software angels at Red work faster than most. You can bet more goodies are on the way..:thumbup1:

What if we compare shooting three hours on a mag vs. 11 minutes and the mag change time.

I am so tired of this stuff.

If you love film so much just shoot film.

there.

You may be tired of this stuff, but it is GOLD. Believe me.

Why do you think improvements are being made? B/c Red from top to bottom is listening to the compaints of its users and their comparisons of the Red One to other methods of acquisition.

Disagree? Look at how suggestions for improvement and comparisons to the competition are regularly beat down on Avid's community forum by fellow users. It's not doing the company any favors.

Yeah,

I agree, but the bitching about how RED is not FILM gets tired. It will never be film. And we already know the EPIC boots in 2 seconds.

That post just felt like whining.

So that assumes you don't have to load film (plus carry it with you)... swap magazines, unload and send to the lab... wait a day to see if you got the shot or if you had hair in the gate. Film actually seems like it is slower to me than waiting 72 seconds to fire up a RED ONE. Oh... and less than 2 seconds for every camera we make going forward.

Jim

LMAO. (wiping away a tear of sadness for film)

The new sensor is not more sensitive to light... it just has a much lower noise floor so you can push it further (use higher ISOs). Much less rolling shutter (comparable to a film camera) and black sun is fixed.

Jim

All good news, look forward to beating the hell out of this thing in the field and sharing the goods...will make you proud.

Quick question, with much "less rolling shutter", will that reduce clipping in flashes (ie gun fire :gun:, flash photography etc)?

Not a fair comparison, you forgot to include the time it take to put a CF Card... So it's more like 6-7 seconds :001_tongue:

Just tried a quick grading on my Windows laptop, never did much outside of WB before. I'm no coloring expert but I like the new interface and I think the new color settings handle skin tones better/"truer".

Scott -

GREAT football correction stills: skin/earth/leather tones are exactly the color ranges I'm appreciating most w/ FLUT™.

Any chance you could post that clip so we could use it for coloring experimentation?

Best,
Eric Trageser

Here's a footage re-grade I did. Both have equal white balance and tint. No curve adjustment.

First is RedSpace color and gamma, 320 ISO.

Second is REDcolor, REDgamma, 250 ISO, 1.5 FLUT™, no curve adjustment

Hugh improvement on the mids in the regraded still, and as you can see there is still plenty of detail in the hair highlights.

Jim,

I believe Rodrigo was talking about the time between you turn the camera on and when you are able to start recording. Assuming that you have loaded film, magazines, batteries, lenses, etc.etc. Certainly film cameras are faster than the Red One……But not faster than Epic or Scarlet will be.

Right now... only REDCINE-X has the new color science. Actually, there are working prototypes of Pablo and Scratch with the new science. We are getting the SDK out to all so it will be in the apps as soon as they feel the need to implement it.

Jim

Thanks very much - great to have that clarified. I've always felt the 'democratization' of post using Color was as important as RED's democratization of shooting. I look forward to Apple catching you up - perhaps you need to stop for a minute!

Red Alert not yet supported?

Could someone post a comparison with some ideally exposed skin tones?

There seems to be a far better handling of that delicate shadow saturation and halftone with the new color space and FLUT tools.

(Milk girls would be cool, and is a couple years long enough to be nostalgic?)

Thanks, I would post it if I could trim the R3D file, the problem is that the remainder of the clip pans to some items of potential security concern (sometimes 4K can actually be an issue ;) ).

Re-grade

Re-grade

This is the first post that REALLY proved the difference to me. Great job!

We were going to buy 1 Red, now I'm thinking our B cam should be Red too...

Jonathan,

Great examples.

I'm still learning how best to use the new version.

So could you explain why you REDUCED the ISO when you wanted to brighten the image?
I thought the point of the FLUT was that it protected the highlights?

Thanks,
Antony
