  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Raven.... Everything Just Changed.

Cant wait, thanks for the heads up Jarred!
O don't worry... The Scarlet engineering team deep inside the RED bunkers are not sitting on their thumbs shaking in a circle with their hands held up to their foreheads crying woe is me.

Scarlet will see its Magnum Opus @ NAB. Or maybe March 1st. Or maybe whenever Brent takes that pain in the ass virus he implanted on all my internet connected devices that makes my system reboot as soon as I start typing Scarlet- <poof>

It's already been said butI just want to point out again that there are EF to PL mount adaptors that work with a lot of lenses out there.
Check your own lenses to see if they might be compatible.

That aside I have a different issue. When Raven was mooted a lot of people were complaining that the sensor size would end up being much smaller than super 35mm. I have a lot of 16mm lenses and was actually excited by the idea but now it seems unclear if Raven is using the same dragon sensors or custom dragon sensors and what the coverage would be like in relation to 16mm lenses.

Can anyone update me on the current situation with that?

Freya

I wouldn't be worried about that. Every RED camera has had different resolution crops. With all the resolution sizes and crops, I'm sure there will be a match for 16mm lenses.

I know this mgiht be the wrong thread but I couldn't get an answer in the RAVEN thread so I'll try it here and also it kind of fits the title "--- everythign just changed"
The question is, Ii the DSMC mounting accecsories will also work with the DSMC2 Models (Raven and Weapon) or will there be all new one?
It's obvious the top plate doesn't fit but how about other stuff?

There are adapters for the "OG" DSMC monitors and etc. in my opinion it's best to take advantage of the package prices red is offering for the newer cordless versions, at the end of the day you don't save much.. I'm looking forward to the new 4.7, the 5.0 will stay where it lives on the epic dragon

So sick of reading people whinge about PL mount.... Seriously get over it, but a scarlet, dragon or weapon.. Red owe you nothing! They can manufacturer and sell whatever they want.. Raven is an entry level Red, you can't have it all

I completely disagree Owen.

RAVEN is also a good bcam and its sensor is near s35 size so it makes a lot of sense to have a PL Mount version, for both reasons.

It's not about doing what we want, but what is requested by the market.

4.5K actually mates better with PL glass (where you can find fast wides) than EF...(except EF-S maybe).

There's a reason why BlackMagic sells the Ursa Mini in PL Mount too...

That is a silly request - that will never happen.

I remember a time when Red criticized Sony for their market segmentation so as not to have their own products compete between themseleves... time has come for Red to do the same. The Raven would not be more expensive with an exchangeable lens mount (or an exchangeable OLPF for that matter), they already have that technology. The only reason the Raven does not have these options is not to hurt sales of their top of line cameras, pity.

My 2 cents,
Damien

If Raven did everything that was requested by the market "PL & swappable OLPFs" where would that leave Scarlet dragon and even Epic Dragon? It would piss them off even more.. Raven is an entry level camera.. Keep it that away

I agree with Owen for the most part. They need to keep the options down to keep the price lower. There is people wanting this and that with raven, they could have offered that at a higher price point, then people would say its to expensive etc etc, no matter there will be people that are not completely happy with what is offered.

As Jarred has stated, there will be a scarlet dsmc2 announced around March, Nab time frame. I'm sure this will offer the PL mount , interchangable olpf for those worrying about the standard, 5k video and perhaps higher for photo, ++++. This is there entry level dsmc 2 option, they have to cut the options somewhere in the line. For me it is more then I expected at the price point and I am more then happy with what they are offereing. Thanks

Actually, got a little more than we forecasted, so, nope.

Simple. Because we figured out we can. So we did.

This. This right here is why I love RED. I can't wait to get my preorder in my hands for my first RED. Thanks for making it even easier to use my wides!

I have not seen that post nick. But 4.5 between widescreen and 2:1, unless I missed something.

Recon thread, more camera for same $$, and here yet again some people are not happy. I frankly just dont understand it. But to each their own I suppose.
Two of my office mates have Epic Dragons, and the Raven is perfect for me so I was super excited to get my first RED and I see all these complaints. We just don't get the demands for PL, more FPS, etc. If you need PL or higher overcranks, rent an Epic or Weapon. This price point favors EF. You are not the norm if you own PL glass and you're UPgrading to this camera. Now maybe if you want Raven as a B cam that might make sense, but there's got to be some compromises on a B cam. And there are PL to EF adapters that work for a lot of lenses and they're relatively cheap. And 120 FPS is pretty amazing with Redcode for this price. Anyway, I'm with you, John. I'll be super pleased when this arrives on my doorstep!

Also I'm super fresh to reduser so it's definitely not all of us with that sentiment.

So is it confirmed?

Can Raven now shoot 4.5K in HD?

No. It can however shoot UHD 4K.

What can RAVEN do?

- Has a maximum motion and still resolution of 4.5K (4608x2160) (sensor size 23.04mm x 10.8mm)
- Shoot at 24fps at 4.5K with a REDCODE RAW Compression Ratio of 3:1
- Shoot up to 120fps at 4.5K
- Lens Mount - Fixed Canon EF
- OLPF - Fixed Dragon Standard OLPF
- Shoots Apple ProRes 422 HQ 2K up to 60fps
- Uses the same accessories as RED WEAPON cameras and is a DSMC² style camera Brain.
- Has Wireless Connectivity built in (WiFi)

Why don't you buy a Ursa then? Maybe the Raven is not for you.

We have a Red One, a Scarlet X, two Epics, an X and a Dragon, yes if the Raven had interchangeable mounts and OLPF, it would kill rental on all these cameras, it would also kill the market, they would sell like hotcakes, like the Red One, because it would be the best value you could get on the market today. I don't think it will happen, I'm not sure I even want it to. Red can do whatever they want, they don't owe me anything, I'm thankfull for what they've offerd me. I'm just noticing that when the One was released it was the best camera they could make at the best price, today they're following a business model, not technological possibilities. I wish it weren't so.
My 3 cents, cheers,
Damien

They make a 6000$ camera that is annihilating the red one (which was 17500$ I guess) .....
They make a 8k camera ....
And the future scarlet will be insane at a crazy price.
People who owned DVX100s, HVX200 can now, for almost the same price, own a Hollywood camera. Is there really a reason to complain?

I don't understand why some people complain about the Raven?
You can take it with amazing CP.2 super speeds with EF Mount shoot amazing images up to 150fps at 4K WS.
There's simply no other manufacturer that offer the camera that can record RAW (best format for photo and video) at 120fps@4.5K with this light and small form factor, with upgradeable future program (there's no other company that will buy the old product from you and upgrade your camera to the new one for less money).
If you want the Raven to have switchable lens mount and OLPF, with 4k120fps RAW you will be on the price of the Epic.

Raven is amazing "little" ticket to the RED world. Get used to it. :)

This is probably the dumbest thing that has been posted on this forum since it started.

Of course having a exchangeable lens mount costs more money.

There are many more mechanical pieces that go into an exchangeable lens mount, Many more electrical interfaces and internal adjustments that are incredibly complex, that not only cost more on a pure part level but take alot longer to manufacture, test, assemble and calibrate.
