  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Raven.... Everything Just Changed.

Scarlet Dragon has just been cannibalized. He was a good dude though. Underrated guy. I even let him stay with me for a few months before I sent him back home. So young.

Like the Epic Dragon will be cannibalized by the Scarlet Raven. Young hungry dudes.

Hate to say that, but that's actually another bad news for the resale and rent value of each Epic Dragon and Epic MX owner.
I wish this camera is at least such a big success for Red, so that they are sooner able to produce and announce a new sensor with 4.5K+, 120fps+ AND pretty clean ISO until 25.600 like the A7S2.
This would be a day to cherish and – unlike Raven – this sensor could create gamechanging unseen footage, as lowlight scenes that only could have been shot at f1.4 right now then could be shot at up to f7.1 as well.

So Jim and I just had one of those Epic all-nighters working away in Stage 4...

Now it is morning.

and now Raven has become 4.5k.

23.04mm x 10.8mm

No additional cost to you.... just to us.

Brought to you by the wonderful engineers @ RED.

Enjoy.

Think this is really cool. I wonder how the calculations are done. I mean imagine if RED started to sell 8k weapons for lets say 5k USD.. Then for sure the number of sales would possibly increase with a factor of what, x100 or so would probably not be an exaggeration. Then how much could the price be pushed down by the increased sales number etc. Must be shit hard to dial in the prices right especially when set so early in the process. Like when dragon came out the price was set quite early in the process then cameras where sold then shipped back for olpf adjustments etc. The cost for it all must be a night mare to calculate for.

I think a low cost alternative like raven is really important. To day a camera manufacturer will need to have such to hurd the crowd in the right direction so the stuff becomes a standard. To me the only missing link on raven is the mount. Why not make it swappable. It must be lest costly to just make the 4 screw holes than sticking the canon mount on there. And then films students and everyone else using these could play around with 3rd party mounts and all the lenses they could think of and the initial cost for camera would be less. To me it can only be a way to make it difference to scarlet, not to make people jump down from scarlet to raven and so on. I dont know reds strategy behind it all but if it was up to me I would make the raven the most it could possibly be, and then it would have a swappable mount for sure. Think then it would sell like hot cakes... not that it will not sell like hotcakes as is, but well... even more so with a swappable mount.

And if things can suddenly change from 4k to 4,5k.... then how hard is it to make four screw holes instead of a mount :)

I don't want to moan or piss off red but interchangeable mount is good idea

This is great news but no Pl is unfortunately still stopping me from placing a raven deposit.

As a red one mx owner, raven would be an enormous ergonomic upgrade, not to speak of the Dragon sensor, but not only have I invested in PL glass, but all the glass I would look to rent is PL (Cookes, Anamorphic's etc.).

Still though, this upgrade is edging me closer, my r1mx has a 24.2 x 12.5 sensor and this now has 23.04 x 10.8 which is awesome.

I have to say I'm absolutely fine with canon mount. All big companies like Zeiss make lenses with user changeable mounts.
And I understand why RED made RAVEN with canon mount. Canon mount is the most common lens mount I guess. There are lenses from the cheapest to the almost most expensive.
I guess 99% users that bought Raven are not going to use Master Primes or Leica C lenses with it.
If I had the money for the set of Master Primes I would definitely buy the Weapon for those lenses.
Raven is 4K4ALL :)

I would hope anyone investing $10,000 in a camera would be capable of being hired at some point for shoots where the production could afford to rent glass like master primes.

The reason Zeiss released EF mount lenses was because the 5D cine market became massive and you can't put PL lenses on a EF mount.

It seems a little backwards to believe that being restricted to a lens mount that only holds cine lenses that have been created for the DSLR/c300 niche is better than the last 30 (and continuing) years of PL cine lenses we have to choose from.

..still happy to hear about the .5k though :)

4.5KFORALL I woke up smiling today thinking about what this means for me and my career. This is truly incredible, can't barely wait to get this camera firing off shots. Any comparison to the other new offerings from other companies just don't add up. When u take the REDCODE+Dragon Color science others just can't come close at this price in my honest opinion. I think this should be the camera that every student learns how to work on. I think I've actually been inspired to look into teaching a RED course at my former High School who has a small film program. Kids should go INTO film school knowing how to use one of these. I'm sooooooo excited its insane!

This is a very cool development. Literally nobody has any reason NOT to buy one of these as a backup cam, or use as a drone, etc.

I have no really good words and can't thank you enough. This is such a great move, only RED does things like this. Love this. Others would have just made RAVEN Mark2 18 months later.

Thank you Jim and Jarred, this is huge! You are the best.

You do realize that RED makes other cameras; some with removable mounts, which allows for renting PL glass? ;-)

In the RED world, although highly capable, Raven is still the "entry level" camera and pricing is based on RED's choice to keep it "lean" in terms of certain features. If you want the full blown capabilities that RED offers, such as interchangeable mounts, then you go for Weapon - or possibly wait for the new camera that has been hinted at which would fall between Raven and Weapon.

It's a big change not only for the raven but for the whole lineup. I don't see anymore the weaponized scarlet being only 5k with a raven @4.5k 3:1.
Probably 5.5K or 6K. Then what about Weapon 6K?
