  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Raven.... Everything Just Changed.

Here's a useful thing.

New York! erm... No wait. RED DSMC[SUP]2[/SUP] BRAINS - Formats and Film:

Thanks for this Phil. Really helpful. So if I'm shooting on 16mm lenses I'll probably max out at 2.5K, so only a little improvement in that sense against my red one.

Can we please stop fighting over the EF mount?

EF is the norm for indie and beginner shooters. Far more people own EF glass than PL. (I'm assuming) Thus the decision to make that the mount for this entry-level cam.

PL is a choice for many top professionals and would be great to have. Red is really great about pulling tricks out of their hat because they actually listen to their customers. Jarred and the guys are well aware that there is a desire for a PL mount version. I would not be surprised if that came as an option later.

But this bickering back and forth is counter-productive. Raven is EF for now. PL might come later. The fact that they are even making the Raven is amazing. And the fact that they listen is even more amazing. So can we put this one to bed?

Jarred I knew The gap of Scarlet D was to be taken cared of...Thankssssss But man, to wait for march without any spilled beans? throw us one at least! hehehehehehehe

Don't sweat the haters Adam. The fact is I bought my Canon CN-E EF mounted primes because i rent my gear. Guess what? people love to rent my lenses for their 5D, Sony a7S with speedbooster, gh4 with speedbooster, I use them all the time on my epic, and now i will use them for the raven.. In a way your correct, EF glass could be considered as "starter" but only because there is so much of it around (which is prob why they made the decision to go with EF mount coupled with its compatibility with Fool Control which is a huge deal) ..

BUT i mean.. Almost EVERYONE i know who owns a Red uses EF mounts and keeps the PL mount around for when they rent glass for big jobs.. unless you own a large PL lens collection this feature on the raven should not be a concern at all. IF you have a large PL lens collection it is my suspicion that you already own a Epic or a Scarlet or an Arri cam.. in which case the raven cant replace that anyhow...

So grab a cheap set of EF CINE glass to use for your raven and look at the camera as your "cheaper option" for clients. I'm very sure that even some rokinons on the raven with a few accessories will rent for $250-300 a day.. for me, I'm just looking forward to having another red cam, and get used to the new body type, pick up some new accessories that will someday translate to my NEXT red cam with out taking the big leap to Weapon JUST yet.

I remember being at NAB last spring and walking around the RED booth thinking aww man, I JUST upgraded to Dragon and look at all this new Weapon Swag. I was still excited about my dragon upgrade, and just hoped by next NAB i would have a way to get something new.. well THIS NEW camera (raven) is pretty much exactly what i want right now.. so w/e no PL mount.. fine.. Fixed Standard OLPF... fine.. guess what its gonna look killer, and although a lot of people like the Low Light OLPF.. I have to Say everything looks better to me with the skin tone highlight Olpf, looks like this new standard one will be a nice blending of the 2...

If people can't get excited about that please please please go buy a blackmagic ursa mini with PL mount.. my thinking is you will be disappointed..

Alot of the Bourgeois will never admit it , but The EF mount ( at least our version of it ) technically is a better mount. Sure there are some great lenses that only come in PL mount ( that is changing fast though ) , but the same can be said about some great EF glass, and you can buy adapters to adapt almost everything else to EF mount, including Nikon. The PL does have a greater sheer strength ( which isn't necessarily a good thing ) and the PL doesn't require a twist to lock ( again, that argument can go both ways. )

EF mounts are smarter. They are smaller, lighter, and offer the option of powered internal motors.

The Raven won't come in a PL mount version. For those that must have PL now... you need to look upwards to our other cameras. Or wait for the new Scarlet, which is going to be one badass disruptive little motherfucker.

Sounds good. It seems a lot of love will be put in that one. I always had the feeling the scarlet was a little bit the ugly duckling here.

I've always had a soft spot for ugly ducklings.

This is probably the dumbest thing that has been posted on this forum since it started.

Of course having a exchangeable lens mount costs more money.

There are many more mechanical pieces that go into an exchangeable lens mount, Many more electrical interfaces and internal adjustments that are incredibly complex, that not only cost more on a pure part level but take alot longer to manufacture, test, assemble and calibrate.

Personally, I wish that the people who know how to manufacture a camera better than RED would just shut up and go start a camera company. Because, if those people are really that good, we could have a camera twice as good as Weapon, with every feature ever requested by a DP, for the price of an iPhone.

I wonder where this leaves weapon magnesium, now it seems like the odd product if vs this new weapon scarlet

Unless, they keep the old epic body style and basically turn scarlet into epic, keeping the new body style for raven, weapon mag, and weapon carbon, hmmm...

RED never disappoints.

this is a very good point. a close buddy of mine ordered the weapon magnesium upgrade. I was always a little skeptical of this decision as it seemed to be the same camera we already own in a new body. Granted I'm ignorant about the processing power of the weapon as it applies to compression and other things, and the pro rez feature is nice. what ever im psyched about my decision to get a raven! Weapon will have to wait for now.

Don't discount the better color of the Dragon sensor tech. It's a big deal.

Just to back what Jarred is saying about EF glass. Some of the most interesting optical designs in the last 7 years have been released and are available in EF Mount. And that trend continues to this day. For those focused on budget or entry level cinema glass, and some very high quality zooms as well, all of those manufacturers offer their lenses in EF Mount or interchangeable mounts. Also, you have access to pretty much any lens that can be easily adapted to EF Mount, which is a few decades of lenses. There are tons of options. Not to mention electronic control over iris and focus, which is handy for so many applications. I shoot with both PL and EF glass often.

And as one of the few who's been able to hold a Raven in his hands briefly, the new EF Mount has a slightly different locking collar to secure the lens.
