  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RANGER Custom Rental House Camera

Had a chance to see the Ranger in person today at February Freeze in Toronto, it's quite nice (and light, and quiet!)
Curious if that new Lemo Adapter might be available for us mere mortals to purchase (maybe a job for GDU?), I like the way the lemo is oriented and the 3/8's helicoil insert threads.

Jarred. I bought my Red one in 2007. I was on DVXuser when we were all creating a wish list for the camera Jim said he would build and we dreamed about. i still have emails between jim and Kelly and I when i was sending 1000 depsoit on my credit card and in the end couldn't afford to do it, but ended up managing to scrape it together. I shot my first feature on a red one, with no monitor, 8gb CF cards, down converters, no evf. I've been through every proliferation since then, recently purchased a new gemini and dropped the same price as the camera accessorising it. You finally build the camera i've always wanted...... and i can't have one ?. You can only imagine the frustration i feel right now. I love what Red has done, how you have pushed the industry. I never complain at you guys, at Red....but this.

You shot a feature film with no monitor *and* no EVF??? That must have been troublesome!!

Agree. I really loved it.

Hey man, these cameras as you can imagine are pretty expensive to make in low quantites. It doesnt really make sense unless you buy at least 10 of them.

Internal vote for potential interest > reservation deposits > higher quantities

Guessing more than 10.

: )

Hats off...

1) How does this camera solve any reliability issues?

2) Why don't you just build more of them? If you want only rental houses to have the RANGER to be in favor with them, then just say so instead of pointing towards the price. The Alexa LF is way over 100 grand and companies still buy it.

It says it´s not for sale. So possibly just something the rental companies get to lease. Reson for such tactics can be unlicensed gear inside, as it´s very different build a camera and rent it out then actually selling the same camera, as then you need to license the parts used.

So in reading Jon Fauer's great interview with Jarred about Ranger and the reasoning behind it I now understand the value for rental houses and I also have come to the feeling that I don't want Ranger.

I think Ranger helps make ACs happy and form a system closer to DXL2 and Alexa. But I love how I can strip my Monster to almost nothing and run around with it. I so welcome the development of the Ranger but I am not a rental house. I am a DOP who loves having a Vistavision camera in a package that would make Alfred Hitchcock salivate.

So great job Jarred and Red family my ACs are so happy

Yep -- the Ranger has specific benefits for Rental houses that are servicing crews. Will be easier for them to efficiently prep and also use on set. Will be easier for us to maintain and keep in fighting trim. There is nothing 3rd party on this camera. Let that sink in. For a rental house that is extremely helpful.

We will definitely still be keeping some Monstros for when we need the cameras to be as small as possible. And we will lean on lots of 3rd party bits (as we have been doing) to help the tiny camera shine.

Ranger is the result of RED putting considerable effort over a long, long time into hardware that will help us support the cameras on large crewed sets. We totally appreciate that level of responsiveness from a manufacturer.

One last thing -- the Ranger is very very well set up for the shoulder: best camera RED has made in that regard by a long shot. Put a couple Shape handles on it and away you go.

Likely not Brian, there's a big difference between consignment and the concept of various levels of a RED Authorized house, which even goes down to camera support. This is not a one to five body commitment, though I can see some angles in smaller markets perhaps where that might work personally.

My understanding is that a rental house needs to place a minimum of 10 Rangers. I don’t know why 10 people can’t just pool their funds together and buy them? As jarred mentioned it’s a cost issue that’s prevents these from selling a la carte.

RED had a rollout of Ranger at RSH yesterday. So sad that I missed it. It is my understanding that some rental houses have some already.

Am looking forward to seeing it. A part of me would love my Monster to look like that but I also love my tiny little package of powerful image creation!

I think this carves out an exclusive rental market for rental houses so they don't feel like they are competing against owner/operators. It also standardizes a comprehensive build for them. But I'd guess the first part is the prime directive. I don't see how this can also be sold to individuals, no matter how large a group gets together, when that will clearly dilute the exclusivity factor.

So these are expensive to make in such small quantities but buyers that are not rental houses are not able to help increase those quantities? Definitely looks like the middle finger to owner ops.

The rental houses are a very valuable set of customers. Delivering something that they find necessary for their business model is just good customer service on RED's part.

That said, I'm hopeful that some of the design and ergonomic improvements will make their way back to the models accessible to us. In the end, what I like to shoot on as a filmmaker, leans heavily towards the model I'd rent from a rental house. The flexibility of stripping things down etc., is more the outlier scenario, not the standard. I think of this every single time I end up building a frankenstein rig because so many of the basics these days, aren't part of the core body or available in a comprehensive, balanced module.

I met with Jarred today and discussed many a thing. Mostly rental houses who are ordering a minimum of 10X Range bodies are where these are targeted. This mostly due to Ranger's price and unique manufacturing requirements.

However, Jarred mentioned if he could gang up 10 or so individuals for guaranteed orders he'd entertain it and likely do it.

Personal and practical perspective. Rental houses certainly reacted to the Panavision DXL, especially those moderately or heavily invested in RED cameras. It was this reaction and listening to what they wanted and how to appropriately fit their needs that Jarred and RED went down the path to create, revise, and develop Ranger in this way. Mostly in the case of a typical rental environment a house likely would favor a body that can be quickly deployed and not be so concerned about modules, or in this case pretty much a single module.

To that point for those rental houses and individual owner operators ask yourself if you need that pre-built/rigged mindset or something more flexible in terms of modularity. Because a DSMC2 body w/ the RED Production Module gets you 90% of the way there when compared to Ranger. Remember, Ranger can never be made smaller or even larger if that's your desire. DSMC2 can do whatever the hell you want it to do rigging-wise.

I certainly see where people feel perhaps slighted by the DXL and Ranger, but you have literally the same powerful tools in your hands in a slightly more flexible package. Remember PV and others still over DSMC2 brains when they need smaller rigs.

If you're aiming for a similar day rate to a house for the feature set, grab the new module and be done with it. It actually saves you money if you already own a body if you think about it.

I'll run and hide after that, but still pretty into my DSMC2 brains for their flexibility. Just with the Production module came out before I purchased OMOD XLR Module and REDVOLT XL Expanders and all that. That's my gripe, but I'm building a time machine and smuggling the new tech and burning the 3rd party modules that didn't work or never came to be to the ground. Snicker.

And the normal (whatever that means) DSMC2 scratches the inner LEGO® itch. I've yet to see two builds that are exactly alike. Kinda like DPs.
