  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Quick Look - LG 31" DCI 4K Monitor

LG Canada cant make up their minds on a delivery date so I had to cancel.

I guess Ill wait on the Sony demo to drop for any testing with UltraStudio and REDRAY.

Based on likely specs, a second generation NeoMP cylinder should be a much better tool for what we do. The OG "trashcan" did a lot of very clever things, and , despite the PCIe bus omission, the form factor is a brilliant bit of design work. Once Apple can get enough of the newest chips/etc to release a NeoMP with plenty of PCIe3 lanes to properly support I/O along with DDR4 RAM that can keep up with everything - it becomes a different equation. In the meantime, it still does more per watt of energy consumed than any other compute device I've seen in wide use.

Cheers - #19

Eric the pattern I'm suggesting starts at 12 or 1 o' clock and continues clockwise and not at 6 as apple is showing. That's why I said it doesn't make much logical sense but that's the real life findings of my tech support.

Good to know that it works when starting at 6 o clock as the apple site suggests.

Patrick Ill give that a go.

My setup is:

Apple Cinema 30s x 2 (shared via Geffen DVI Splitter)
Black Magic UltraStudio 4K
Pegasus Promise 12TB Thunderbolt 2
Sonnet Express III (RED ROCKET) Thunderbolt 2
Sonnet Express III (Digidesign HDX) Thunderbolt 2
REDMAG READER Thudnerbolt to Firewiire Convertor

Somewhat off topic.

Received Sony PVM X300 demo today.

As far as RED RAY complete fail and can only do HD 24p.

Tried HDMI 1.4 cables (slew of them at different lengths no more than 3m and as short as 3ft).

Now the UltraStudio 4K was a bit of a ride.

Got the HDMI and SDI working.

SDI with both OUTPUT to ch 1 and ch 2 gives the Sony a nice image boost.

I lack experience on that part so if someone can chime in that would be nice.

The two apps that work so far are FCPX 10.1.4 and Resolve 11.

RCXPro will not work in any UHD format and constantly crashes.

I have the BMD Prefs set to 4K 23.976.

Now I wish I had the LG since this Sony is priced at 14K :P

RED RAY fails more often than it works. The list of displays that it does work with is pretty short and it seems totally incompatible with any HDMI 2.0 displays I've tried.

:-(

Off topic again.

Avid MC 8.3 4K UHD works with the Sony and UltraStudio test Ive been having fun with.

Wished it was the LG cause this Sony is a bit pricey for my taste :P

An Avid engineer suggested this Samsung U28D590D model to be running decent with Avid and UltraStudio 4K.

Its cheap but a bit small for what I wanted.

Anyone else have suggestions that fares as well or better than this LG?

About to order from Adorama but on the fence again.

For double price there's the NEC PA322UHD (2999$) that includes internal 14 bit LUT hardware calibration (3D-LUT) and you can expect far better uniformity and color reproduction! and posibility to for 1.5k more to add an HDSDI in/out module.

Somebody has this monitor? Still no confirmation that works with UltraStudio4K!

I'm planning to add one to my studio. I do a lot of multi-cam and its got a cool feature where you can view 4 1080p streams at once without going through another converter.

How would you set that up?

I dont think the UltraStudio 4K can pull that off?

Im just about to pull the trigger on this display with Adorama.

Anyone else have anything that bests this one?

I fear by the time I get it, a new display will pop-up and give me buyer remorse :P

LOL!

The monitor does it on its own. At least on paper it does. I've got an email in to their techs asking for confirmation.

Outside of the upcoming Eizo ColorEdge CG318-4K 31", which uses the same panel, I don't know of anything on the horizon that is a DCI 4K resolution that competes with this.

Thanks Phil for the reply :)

Are you still digging this display as a GUI or have you tried it as a ref monitor?

Were looking at it as a ref.

I've been on location on and off for the last 2 months, but I've been using it for "both".

I'll check out the Eizo at some point as well, but I'm 100% confident it's in a different price bracket. Though, the auto-calibration sounds appealing.

Decimator DMON-4S does it for $500. Pair it with the MD-HX for HDMI > SDI conversions (Up/Down/Cross) for only $300 more. Tons of multi format options and reliable hardware doing the conversions. I'm willing to bet they'll drop a 4K version at NAB.

Speaking of which, I wonder if this LG will hold its own through April because I'd really love to pick up one after looking at the other options out there currently.

Apple seemed to have updated the drivers in 10.0.2 for the LG 31MU97:
all resolutions are now perfectly supported on the MacPro2013, 4096x2160@50Hz.
Even the retina sub-resolutions are very usable. My new favorite big display !

I am behind one for 6 weeks now, can't be happier with it. (as a GUI monitor) I am seriously thinking about adding a second one as a 'ref' monitor.
