  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Pro Res?

Does this mean higher framerates have lower compression? If so... hurray!

Great on Pro Res. Please tell me that my 4 512 minis that cost 9000 will work and not have to right away buy the 1tb cards.

I am not sure I want to see the price tag on that mag! I hope they have discovered a way to reduce costs on the mags overall.

RED has always been about options IMHO.

If ProRes does come, then its just RED being RED ;)

Can somebody break down the advantages that are causing the excitement?
For example, specific data rate/subsampling specs that will create an advantage over shooting heavier compressed R3D.

Its all about workflow and delivery time. Alexa has shown that that people are not complaining about the quality of PorRes. At a minimum it takes away an excuse not to shoot RED.

:iagree:

But personally I have grown partial to creating them myself, in Resolve. It's fast, and I can tweak as much as I want before I bake. Granted not everyone can do that.

I primarily work on the Windows platform, so I don't use ProRes at all. Just trying to answer Akin's question. :) But I understand why people are excited.

And doing it well.

Windows... good point. I forget about what a pain ProRes is for Wintels to deliver.

Not that much of a pain for those using Miraizon up until it was bought by somebody. Which reminds me. NAB.

It's not really a quality thing, it's just that some productions really want prores, period, and that is that. So now there's an easy option.

Whoooo... feels good to be wrong in this case!

Not sure if simultaneous dual streams (r3d + prores) will be possible, but 4k+ prores is vastly heavier than 4k+ r3d, so that alone likely necessitates the higher write speeds of minis. Also points to real in-camera LUT support (not just RMD per output support)... Maybe we'll see official RLF>Rec709 or P3 or sRGB or what-have-you LUTs!
