  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I once again am trying to work my way through the word of abbreviations. Last week you guys straightened out on the meaning of “bump” in a posting. Now, everyone seems to tell each other to “PM” them. Sorry, I do not know what this is short hand for. An insight would be greatly appreciated.

Acronyms are an interesting and rapid developing part of the English language. These also exist in certain other cultures. With the advancement of text based communication such as Text Messaging and various Social Networking websites commonly used terms are seemingly more and more commonly shorted into an Acronym form to save time. Oddly, yet not totally unexpected, they have also reintroduced themselves into spoken word communication.

Modern Acronym Examples:

LOL = Laugh out Loud
IMO = In My Opinion
IMHO = In My Humble Opinion
TTYL = Talk To You Later

Perhaps the most commonly distributed one in related to "actual internet content" is the FAQ, or Frequently Asked Questions.

Which this question itself actually falls under.


So, in short, PM = Private Message. A Private Message is a form of communicating through public web forums similar to email. It's out of the public eye and usually between two individuals.

My dad's reaching his 70's and just got himself an iPhone. I had to explain to him how to text message. He still uses the house phone with the coiled plug.

The charger confused her whenever it needed to be connected. ------------ As for PM, the original topic, it has always conflicted me as on my side of the ditch, it means "Prime Minister" and "post mortem". There is also a colourful swear "p--- m---", which I shall not go into.

Ha, so true about that last part. I still can't mentally pronounce FAQ any other way than a swear word... Fa-Q... It just seems more fun that way.
 
I was introduced to acronyms at an early age while in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. As a company clerk I was daily typing such acronyms as USARVN, (United States Army Republic of Vietnam) CINCPAC, (Commander-in-Chief Pacific) MACV, (Military Assistance Command Vietnam) and the favorite of all U.S.es...(draftees as opposed to RAs...Regular Army enlistees)...

SNAAFU... (Situation Normal-Army All *Foxtrot-uniform-charlie-kilo-echo-delta* Up.
 
Google is your friend, you can look this stuff up yourself... as I did recently when I was curious where the phrase "more cowbell" originated from.

My dad was in the Navy, which is fond of acronyms, and as a science geek watching documentaries about the space program, you certainly hear a lot of them when NASA is talking to their astronauts.

Hah!... curiosity got the best of me and I wikied it. Haven't watched much SNL since the days of the John Belushi era. Like the Golden Age of movies that hold my attention, I think SNLs Golden Age was during that time.

Phil, my I suggested in tandem with your spec sheets on Red cameras, there is also accompanying document on modern day abbreviations and their usage on Reduser ; ) !

"OMG". Not likely. Oddly though, the man responsible for me shooting my first short film over 20 years ago was my literature teacher back in the day. So you can blame him for having me around :)
