  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picture of a Weapon

Look like Shane Hurlbut going to share all the details on the Weapon 3.11.15
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9m5USyfv1ZE
He is not, it's just a coincidence. He is launching his new website on that date, and as part of that, sharing the extensive RED Dragon tests that in his words "showcase the power of this new sensor and hot it has turned this camera from the Jack of all trades to the master of all."

I understand all the discussion about "trade-ins" and retaining legacy Accessories. We have all spent a lot of money of modules and media and 3rd party designs. I am sure Jarred and Brent and team have thought long and hard. But what is important is that this new camera's design (inside and out) is the best those mad scientists (Graeme!) can come up with and that they should not hurt that design by trying to make all the legacy parts work.

Epic was a huge departure from the Red One design and thank God for that. Let RED give the best of what they've got and not be overly concerned about the past. Yes obsolescence Obsolete but that is what we get with the trade in deals....

Please do not make Jarred feel bad for not having to reverse engineer..... Otherwise it will be a Radio Shack bread board and Arri will continue unfettered.

So true! :)

Granted. Weapon brain is actually almost half an inch shorter than the Epic brain, and when you add the modules there is no adapter needed and things get much more compact ( the base IO for example only adds 3/8" of an inch to the body ) For super compact setups, where you may not even need the base IO, just the battery module, you can skip the IO module completely.

That adaptor was expensive and it's gonna be useless now
I think we need to know exactly what gear that isn't going to work. I just ordered the quickrelease plate with the mounting plate, will that even work with a smaller camera?

So, my adaptor module will be obsolete, what else? I really think that we need some indication on what's going to happen with our gear because this upgrade isn't just paying for an upgrade it's gonna cost us a lot more if we need to replace and buy new accessories. Right now, if the side handle and the adaptor module is obsolete that's $2200 I lost in the upgrade. Almost completely new gear.

It sounds like a new eco system all together. Modules fitted on the back of camera will not work. Monitors can be adapted but most likely they will be pretty much outdated in comparison to the new stuff as the red one screens and viewfinder was outdated when the epic came out.
Same probably goes for pretty much everything else. Like cages, toplates etc. The hight of the camera has not been mentioned but from looking at the pictures it seams like its the same. So most likely the quick plate will still work. And to m it makes not much sense to make the distance between the lens mount and bottom of camera less than it is as it fits within the 19mm rod standard. And as the image can be flipped and flopped the camera can be mounted upside down when a lower lens is needed...

The ctr port and the sync port seems to be the same, and I assume the power port is also the same... The XL batteries fits and I assume there will be a Vlock module as well.

Except for that I think pretty much every thing will be new..

Jim and Jarred were always more than fair to the users when the time came to upgrade. Just think about the cut down on the upgrade towards dragon and the offer towards the mini mags which just came to be in the last few days after listening to the RU noise :)

Maybe they might consider some sort of credit towards WEAPON modules / acc for everything bought in the last 2 months before NAB which will be obsolete for weapon. (If my memory serves me right, they offered something similar to that before!?)

That said: there will still be a lot of people out there shooting MX and Dragon, who will be happy to get their hands on some 2nd hand gear. So you most probably won't loose as much as you mentioned now.

Björn it seems that, as bad as it is - if your insurance pays up - in the end the robbery was just the right timing.

Apparently some back modules are compatible with Weapon, but you won't need a module adapter or a +1 because the extra outputs are already on the main Weapon body.

Hmm. We will see. I hope you're right! Anything that I can keep my dual module ;)

I think Jarred said the number of pins are different on the new mounts from what is on the present mounts, so as you suggest, don't look for too many of the old modules to transfer, if any. Plus, some of the old modules are unnecessary on the new cam due to their function residing on the new body.

Cool.

I certainly hope that's the case and we have multiple monitoring options, fullsize SDI in for those occasions when sound department foists their responsibilities upon camera department do happen. But HDMI? Oh good lord that connector needs to stay on video game systems and blu-ray players...and nothing else!

I agree Isaac...HDMI!

Hurlbut will be Canon C-300 update. I think production just found a cool looking box (of course) to use as a prop. C-300 mk 2. Cfast cards. 4k on board.

HDMI? A Lesson Never Learned.. Sigh

Kemalettin - Jarred mentioned that HDMI is on the "legacy" side module...and has confirmed there will be other side modules with other outputs...it looks like outputs in general will become far more modular and expandable than ever before...I wouldn't read too much into this one HDMI example...as what's most important is that outputs appear to be a hotswappable part of Weapon, opening the door for a whole new level of connectivity not just for Weapon, but for the RED ecosystem in general...

Jarred, will the RED MOTION TI CANON MOUNT work on Weapon?

I was just about to order it last week, but now I'm scared it won't work on Weapon.

A little 'shouty' don't you think?
Anyway the only things I'd be buying from the REDStore until the Weapon reveal are:
-Dragon Upgrade
-REDVolts
-RR-X
-Mini Mags

Unless of course you don't plan on moving forward in the next 18-24 months and can make your money back.
