  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picture of a Weapon

So yes you've been selling your new product for a year but I've been recommending 240GB modules to people for the last year too because most people don't need the highspeed and nobody I've talked to has wanted fewer larger cards over more small cards. My only question is you mention "Big Cards" does that mean you'll only be taking back 512GB cards not 128s? I have the equivalent of one 512GB card (and then would need to buy another one to have two cards at all times). But would I be excluded from this offer since I've got 2x 128s and a 240.

Gavin, I think you are reading into what Jarred said way too much and actually misreading some of it. No where did he say it would be a trade in. In fact, he said, "It's not a trade in thing, but more of a one time discount" So not sure why you are thinking RED is going to be taking back cards.

Also, he didn't say only 512 REDMags would qualify. He said REDMags and that's it. That would imply all redmags would qualify for the discount. I would imagine RED will just ask for the serial numbers of the mags you are asking a credit for just so no one is double dipping though.

it is not called the legacy module but yes, you would be correct.
Please keep the HDMI out in all your modules, it's really useful for a lot of things. I hate HDMI in itself as a connector, but I have a small Paralinx Arrow plus Rx which lives on my camera and which I love.
Oh, but maybe wireless video is already included in that new body ? ;)

Anyway, here are the few things I'd really love to see in this new camera :
- More efficient and more silent cooling
- Lower power consumption (it's already great, but if it gets better the small Redvolts might become a serious option for very lightweight configurations)
- Built-in 3D-LUT support
- Being able to zoom 1:1 to check focus while recording
- Built-in Wifi (with a reasonable range) so we can use foolcontrol and other systems without needing an additional box
- A V-mount back module that doesn't need an adapter module

And please if the Side handle isn't compatible anymore, give us another lightweight option that allows to have a small Redvolt battery attached to the camera while using a V-mount battery as main power. Being able to hot-swap V-mount batteries without having to shut the camera down is one of the best things ever ! ;-)

Hopefully, they introduce some 256 and maybe 128 mini-mags. I am not sure I can afford to go out and buy a 4-pack of 512s and I'd hate to work off of just one card. :-(

Will there be a trade-in/discount for the new sidehandle? I've been assisting some bigger commercial DP's and they're loving the "hasselblad" style rig that I built my camera package around. Just as people are warming up to the current sidehandle you guys come out with a newer, better one.... awesome :)

I'm glad I switched to Mini-Mags last year, but at the same time I would have loved a discount back then ;P (spent about 12k on media alone!)

My first thought was probably not a trade-in for the side handle... my second thought was maybe there will be if you send it in with your old camera body since they may sell the old bodies as BT Dragons and the side handle may be part of that package. But then I wondered... are they going to transfer our sensors and boards into the new body? If that's the case then the old camera cases will just go into the recycle machine.

Maybe they give us the option of re-using our old sensor for a discount upgrade price. In that case the old box is recycled. But if they go completely new, better tuned sensors across the board, then maybe I'll get the upgrades and save back for a BT Dragon in a year or so and can reuse some of my current Dragon stuff.

based on the number of the big cards you have. So if you have 6 big cards, you can buy up to 6 minimags

TradeIn Tomato Potato it's a 1:1 discount. ;) But now that I re-read it you are correct I was interpreting the "Big cards" to mean "Big" in storage capacity but in rereading it's obvious Jarred is referring to "Big" as in inches.

We actually helped a 3rd party make exactly that about a year ago... there are some prototypes out there. Unfortunately it never came to market for whatever reason.

Oddly enough, that is actually a little more infuriating.

Alas, upwards and onwards I guess... I'm optimistic that there'll be far less of these gaps to fill with Weapon, and hopeful it'll fire on all cylinders out of the gate.

Are these going to be "Smart" modules or "Dumb" modules aka are these just pass through modules or do the modules themselves need to be a digital interface?

*Please say passive* *please say passive* *please say passive*.

It's a lot easier to design a pin-to-pin module that just is a fancy plug conversion than to need to do all of the ADC work inside the module where appropriate.

Also if it's passive and 'dumb' it would be awesome if you guys made a 'blank' contact pad like you've done with the 'blank' OLPF carriers that we could screw into our own custom side modules.

One thing I am curious about is body dimensions.

Will the Weapon be 13mm taller? Maybe a little thinner? Same or different top mounting points?

+1 Please be able to trade in the side handle!! PLEASE!!! on that NOTE Every accessory we have with DRAGON like the Tactical Plate 2.0 etc.

It's most likely gonna be a Whole new sensor. If you remember Jarred said its like having 200k miles on your car then trading it in and getting a New car with 0 Miles.. Start using your camera more and more to get use out of the fact you got your dragon first because your miles reset after you trade it in! Gotta LOVE RED!!!

It's been stated that it is not a new sensor, that just like the MX transition, the existing Dragon sensor goes into the new body. Then eventually there will be a new sensor that goes into the Weapon body, and so on.

Same question here ;)
I'm starting to wonder if all our accessories (top plates, base plates, modules, side handles, etc...) will need to be changed or if they somehow managed to keep them compatible. I have a feeling that a lot of them will need to be changed. Which may cost a few additional thousands of dollars...

I am very curious about this as well. Considering going to dragon before NAB, but I cant swing all new accessories, etc.

some will some won't. Some modules like the plus one module become redundant, since there are now 2 LCD/EVF connections on the Weapon brain itself.

I understand all the discussion about "trade-ins" and retaining legacy Accessories. We have all spent a lot of money of modules and media and 3rd party designs. I am sure Jarred and Brent and team have thought long and hard. But what is important is that this new camera's design (inside and out) is the best those mad scientists (Graeme!) can come up with and that they should not hurt that design by trying to make all the legacy parts work.

Epic was a huge departure from the Red One design and thank God for that. Let RED give the best of what they've got and not be overly concerned about the past. Yes obsolescence Obsolete but that is what we get with the trade in deals....

Please do not make Jarred feel bad for not having to reverse engineer..... Otherwise it will be a Radio Shack bread board and Arri will continue unfettered.

And that is a big (X) on one of my workflow questions. Great!

One valid question on this front since those beans have spilled. The Quickplate Module still works or is something new in the works? And if it does work and it sounds like some tinkering has happened do we even need the Module Adapter in the chain?
