  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picture of a Weapon

1/8th is a big mistake - mainly because it MOVES (turns) if you touch it - and that causes static/interference. TA3's lock and will not move - and they are very small.

110% Agree

@ Mike, some of my conclusion for the modular concept, is that if it is to be as smart as it sounds, others than RED must be able to make smart stuff and plug into it. 100% agree.
But that moves RED somewhat into having to verify (at least some) external products, and I am not sure how RED feels about that. But after a few years (like 9), I have landed quite close to you on this.

Certain things I DO understand that RED want to run tight ship on, like media, the touch LCD etc etc etc.
The arguments for those are too numerous.

When it goes to EOL'ed products (like 1) I see no biggie other than letting more people into the workflow, by letting people plug in media and other stuff "at their own risk",
Dunno if that's possible, but just releasing an API/SDK for how to control the ONE and how to access that through xxx port on the camera (USB or whatever), and maybe even a capture protocol for the sata port, could expand its aftermarket uses a lot.

Imagine hooking up a PIX or similar to the SATA port and do long takes of RED-RAW.

I think RED would only gain from such a culture. But probably based on EOL'ed products.

But I highly doubt that RED will allow anyone but RED write R3D files.

And I can follow that.

The LDS integration announced high up in the Arri-Mini alongside CDL and 3D LUT's. I hope RED has addressed these (even if it is with "i") in the new body.

And I really hope the sensor is FF 4:3, even though all the medium format stuff sounds nice.

I so love my side-handle... Hahahaha. Nostalgic.

RED have enormous credibility, and everyone knows RED media is as bombproof as it gets. Any future recording FUBARS will result in 'ya shoulda used RED' rather than 'what do you expect with a RED camera'.

Mike, I strongly disagree with you on this. Most tech specs are "optimistic" at best and I don't think RED can trust 3rd parties on media. RED will get blamed for 3rd party media not performing. On any budget shoot, you can't risk media missing the shot.

In the past you would have had a good point, as I conceded. Six years ago RED had to establish credibility. Rightly or wrongly (mostly wrongly!), quite a lot of people saw RED as 'trouble'. They crashed, they overheated, they corrupted files, they needed TLC, and they generally carried on cranky.

That's not the case any more. RED are well-established in the market, and enough big-name DPs have used them on enough big projects to pretty much shut up the naysayers. The mud of the past doesn't stick any more. RED would have, and did get, blamed for 3rd party issues back then. I stand by my assertion; that won't happen any more. If 3rd party recording devices have an issue, 1. their manufacturers will get kicked in the teeth in the market and 2. anyone who hears any bitching will say "Why didn't you just use RED media? Everyone knows that's bombproof, it just works."

That's my thinking anyway - and I'm not the one betting the reputation of a company on it, I freely admit!

Unfortunately that is not the reality we live in. If something goes wrong with a recording, Producers / Directors / People that bought the "3rd party" media that don't want to get in trouble will blame the camera FIRST. We have seen this a thousand times before with random 3rd party gear. It is one of the reasons I detest the cheap D-taps so much... you know, the ones that you can plug in backwards and blow shit up with. I can't tell you how many times over the years D-tap was inserted backwards and it blew something up and we received angry calls from whoever telling us we need to replace their monitors etc.

So yeah.. we take media very very seriously. One bad write could literally ruin a literal million dollar shot or at least one that felt like a million dollar shot. It's just not worth the risk.

Regardless... I know the whole Big Mag to Mini Mag is a jump some people are having problems with even though I have been warning about it for a year. To make things easier, we are working out a special deal for those that have REDMAGS already and need to switch to MINIMAGS. It is not a trade-in thing, but more of a one time discount when you jump over to make things a little less painful... based on the number of the big cards you have. So if you have 6 big cards, you can buy up to 6 minimags at a reduced price, only at the time you switch over. Fair?

We are not trying to screw you guys here.. With technology some things just can't live forever.

More than fair. Can you tell us what range of choices we might have in mini-mags in the near term?

Oh just show us the damn thing already!

I mean that lovingly of course ;)

heh heh sorry I don't know whats going on It looks like nobody is waiting for NAB anymore. Hope I didn't start a bad trend. Or maybe it's a good trend.

Arri looked very well at what Red is doing and has done! But RED will still be there in real 4K and beyond!! So we all learn from each other and go for the future! I ll go with RED. They made my day!!

MINI-MAGs.

I have no idea what's planned or on the horizon when it comes to MINI-MAGs, however a few users have asked for something in the realm of a 256GB model. I can also see a need for a 1TB model for other types of users.

Generally speaking in comparison to equivalent media for competitive platforms the MINI-MAGs seem to be in the wheelhouse price-wise. It's very cool you're working a deal to help folks out for sure.

Agreed. VERY COOL.

I for one really hope for mini xlr.
Damn, I even bought a Sony FS7 to get 4K and XLR in a small package as a c-cam.

I'm so happy about mini XLR and also about the mini mags.

great news!

Minimags and XLR's and (hopefully) dual OLPF/LCD connectors and more than one SDI tap, are all workflow related focuses, which I am really happy to see.

Now. Nail i-data (and LDS), built-in WIFI, CDL/3-D LUTS, ACES-proxy, individual LUTs on individual taps, hopefully even lower latency to SDI, and we're talking something that could probably have a weapon-like impact. If we stick to the same "breakout" concept for TC/sync, at least give an option like the WC breakout for TC/Genlock.

Add a bit of small form and ergonomic designs at the same time, and whoa!

I really have great hopes for this thing, from what I see

About 7 Hours ago I got a message from Jarred with this image in it. He was kind enough to include me and pay homage to the work I have done in the past to push the red's onto the hollywood Elite. I know that I have not posted very much in the last 3 years, mostly because you guys have become so much smarter than me and so much more dedicated to the what ifs and I have become much more of a utilitarian user of the gear as opposed to driver of the tech. it is quite exciting and fulfilling to see this community grow so big and so committed to this format. the cameras have continued to get better week in and week out for close to 8 years and that is the most exciting of all. how there can be 81 posts in 7 hours is beyond me and how you guys can extract so much information from just one tiny picture of a small percentage of the overall camera. it is just so inspiring.

its a great time to be a reduser...our best days are ahead of us for sure.
