  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Picture of a Weapon

HDMI 4K would be cool actually...can hook up to all kind of TVs and monitors...

Exactly. But there also needs to be 4K out via SDI.

With 4K out via HDMI, we can record to an Atomos Shogun as well for instant dailies.

Somehow this photo ended up in my in box...

Thank you Dino for posting this. I'm very happy about the Mini-XLR jacks as that solves something that's been a wiggle for many. 3.5mm jacks were a strange concept on the DSMC bodies from a production perspective and the location was also a bit odd.

I do sincerely hope that since Weapon is a 2015 product and HDMI 2.0 has been standardized and deployed that the HDMI port itself is HDMI 2.0 compatible. Or at least some variant of 1.4 that allows up to 4K signal over a line.

What is also interesting in the picture is the positioning of the A button and what it's attached to.

Modular. This would be the legacy one.

Modular is Good and Right. But, note, three years in since Epic & Scarlet became common in the wild, we still haven't seen a single module for them that isn't made by RED.

For goodness sake, with Weapon, push for open and easy to adopt standards & protocols for module interfaces and communications; if there's a bunch of clever hackers around building modules for functionality that RED never gets round to doing, or is too niche for your guys to take time on, that will really push this camera; anything you want to do with it, any way you want to rig it, someone will make a module for that job.

Still waiting for a proxy module...oh yeah that's right...

I highly doubt 4K HDMI on the new brain. On a new module ... yes, sure hope so ... but on the new skull/brain/weapon .... I don't think so - but I would love it.

LOVE.

Again.. Those can't be XLRs in that pic. They're way too small.

...gotta be 1/8" jacks.

we are all lucky that weapon exists, and that jarred is kind enough to share with us, the redusers, the ability to plan ahead. make new brains. make new modules. make new cameras. thank you RDC for making things we all want and need to make our creative output better. enough "no this and add that."

can we let the creators create?

I wonder if it's the same size as the new Alexa mini. man 30 to 40 gs for 4k ultra is insane. Can't wait to see what this weapon is going to look like.

Thanks for support. Let me amplify what I mean with two contrary examples:

Good example. REDlink. That was done absolutely right. Interface module, well-documented protocol, SDK. All kinds of good things are flowing from that; you can have any kind of control interface you desire, from smartphone app to long-range wired ethernet or RS232 control to a steampunk-style brass box. REDlink should be built-in to Weapon brain. But, so should a direct hardware equivalent for REDmote, Side Handle and Switchblade alternatives.

Bad example. Recording media. Early on, RED put in speed bumps to make it hard to use alternative recording media; firmware that refused to use unapproved CF cards and disks, undocumented external drive interface on R1 etc. And we all know why that was done, and it had good arguments in its favour; RED had to establish credibility and reliability, and didn't want to take the hit for third-party recording device FUBARs. But that is totally no longer the case; RED have enormous credibility, and everyone knows RED media is as bombproof as it gets. Any future recording FUBARS will result in 'ya shoulda used RED' rather than 'what do you expect with a RED camera'. Weapon should have an eSATA or, better, Thunderbolt port for external full raw recording. Direct to tethered RAID, cut out the SSD middle man, for those who want or need that. If people use that and it falls over, they won't blame RED any more; that won't be credible even to skeptics. This isn't 2009 any more.

Fair enough. But it's not a 1/8th. No one needs to plug their sweet stratocaster into a camera.

....ummmm A stratocaster would need a 1/4" jack....

...1/8" jacks in the pic. :boxing_smiley:

;)

1/8th is a big mistake - mainly because it MOVES (turns) if you touch it - and that causes static/interference. TA3's lock and will not move - and they are very small.

I love RED. I've backed them for a long time. I had no use for a 4K camera back in Boris and Natasha days, but I was sorely tempted. As it was, I called my wife (A Goldman Sachs VP at the time) and told her BUY!! - before I knew all the stock was privately held of course. RED have taken me places I'd never had got without them.

But I've never been an uncritical fanboy.

1/8 was stupid mistake.

Making the bloody holes in the front plate / fan support too small for threaded cable connectors to screw on to the threads of the 1/8 connectors was gratuitously stupid on stilts wearing a wig.

Jim should personally take a spade, personally dig a hole, and personally bury every single 1/8th connector left in Irvine. I've blown more takes, lost more shots, and pissed off more clients due to audio problems stemming directly from those 1/8 connectors than *every other cause put together*.

And that's all I have to say on the matter :-)
