  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Phil Holland Weapon Test

Does the weapon require blackshading?

Does the weapon require blackshading?

Yes. But it's different than previous Epic and Scarlet bodies.

You can either use the Black Shading the way you normally do now or use "Auto User Black Shade", which is what I've been rolling with.

What you do is run the AUBS, which takes around 36 minutes if I'm not mistaken, and then whenever you switch shutter speeds/angles the Weapon will automatically load the correct calibration. Usually somewhere around 5 seconds. You see the Exposure Calibration Indicator briefly go yellow, then turn green as it automatically applies the appropriate calibration on the fly. Very, very handy when shooting high frame rates, toggling between normal speed and high speed recording, or just wanting to adjust your shutter speed to something faster for whatever reason. I think it's around a 10 stop range. 1/8th-1/8000th of a second. Makes life much easier.

Question, Is it true that we still have not seen any 4k proress with coresponding r3d recordings from weapon on this forum, not a single frame to download, or have I missed it?

I understand you do not want to share these tests but could you not load up a mag and shot a second of material, preferably with some odd exposure and put it on wetransfer or something. I think there is a few of us that would be curious to see it...

If you're happy with that, let me eat dinner and I'll fire off something quick. I'll role like 5-10 seconds.

HFR, if possible Phil...depending on desert, of course...

Thank you very much

Will do. I'll snap off a few. Likely in the AM now. Just got a bid I need to go over, but I'll do the 4K and 2K ProRes stuff with HFR.

Great!!

That would be great Phil!

I'm really curious to see how noise / grain behaves in the ProRes files...

Agree, shoot out the window or such so you get some extremes both over and under exposure and some in the middle and tungsten and daylight.. all in the same frame, with a bit of high speed / compression :)

I think all weapons should be sold with a spider checker board and cube and red cineXpro should have a quick lay grid on checker, pick mid gray, pick highlight on chrome ball, click pitch back in the pit under the cube and then export perfect calbiration 3D lut to camera. If one low ress proxy frame could come across to an IOS device via the wifi then the calibration lut could easily be done on the phone... Imagine that, set camera to a choosen iso and close enough kelvin shoot redlog film and then tap on your phone to do the rest and then get a perfect as balanced lut for the scene right into the meta data folder for each clip...Must be possible and not that hard to make, no? Mikael probably allready have it in fool control 2.

What a great idea Bjorn to have a checker and pick, built in to the RedCine like on Da Vin... so if you shoot a chip chart or color chart card you can just click and you'll have the best general set up for that light.

Popcorn ready!

Uploading now, it's got a few hours to go. Just to be clear the first two 288 frame 6K HD REDCODE RAW + ProRes 4K LT samples are 7GB.

I admire your bravery in this mission young lad. You will be remembered with honor ;-)

Oh ans something I should note, under Look in camera you have control of your video signal Sharpening. I've used this in the past to sharpen up the image a hair when using the REDCAST Module on RED Epic Dragon pushing out a 4K signal in the past.

However, it's important to remember that Sharpening effects the internal ProRes Signal. Which is actually really cool. I don't like to max it out at 100%, because it looks insane. But I can see anything in the 5-25% range being used for typical ProRes baking. Probably useful for straight-to-air types of shoots me thinks.

Back home after a long, long day.

Alright. Let's get some stuff done. I thought I'd kill a few birds with one camera when I shot this stuff earlier today.

2 zip files with nasty, dirty, quick footage from Weapon featuring my ugly mug under a tree as requested.

First:

phfx_REDWeapon6KHDProResSamples.jpg

Contains a zip file with "6K HD REDCODE RAW + ProRes Samples".

There are two folders:
- phfx_6KHDR3DProRes4K422LT_DC2RG4 - 24fps, 6K HD R3D (REDCODE RAW 4:1) + 4K ProRes 422 HQ with DRAGONcolor2 and REDgamma4, 290 frames
- phfx_6KHDR3DProRes4K422LT_DC2RLF - 24fps, 6K HD R3D (REDCODE RAW 4:1) + 4K ProRes 422 HQ with DRAGONcolor2 and REDlogFilm, 290 frames

This was RED Weapon at ISO 800 with the new Standard OLPF. Additionally, because some have asked, I've left the two internal scratch mics on. So you'll have that audio. I am exactly 6 feet away from camera with it set at 0dB.

Second:

phfx_REDWeaponHFR60fps120fpsSamples.jpg

Contains a zip file with "60fps and 120fps HFR 6K HD and 4K HD Samples" and you will witness me flicking a lemon/lime thing.

There are two folders:
- phfx_6KHD_60fps_DC2RG4 - 60fps, 6K HD R3D (REDCODE RAW 6:1) with DRAGONcolor2 and REDgamma4, 288 frames
- phfx_4KHD_120fps_DC2RG4 - 120fps, 4K HD R3D (REDCODE RAW 6:1) with DRAGONcolor2 and REDgamma4, 288 frames

Also shot with the Standard OLPF at ISO 800.

Slight lighting variations occur due to the oddly overcast day in LA, but all exposures are accurate to middle gray for a standard normal exposure. White balanced to chart prior to filming. Wearing a black shirt because that will show something you might be looking for and I wear black often.
