  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Paul Ellington - New York

Supercool Paul.

Finally got myself into new livingspaces.

1st thing: Installing music.

And, a bit inspired by you...

Listening to the Duke and looking through old pics....

Hope we will meet this year!

Yeah let me know where you will be in the world... Trying to scout for my thesis... So I will with a little help from the Norse Gods be in a bit of everywhere this summer.

Hey Paul, Nice hanging out in Vegas with you. Things are going well. I need to make a trip to NY though.

Just let me know and I will show you around. Also, I may force you to come out and hang if I come to T DOT O... On the list for the summer...

EPIC X MONOCHROME

EPIC X MONOCHROME

Though is hasn't arrived yet, I wanted to post something about this. Ever since the Epic Monochrome came out I was trying my hardest to figure out a way to get one... Already a starving student, getting some play at Festivals for being a "storyteller" but I'll always be a shooter as well.

I am no longer a Scarlet X owner of any kind, had to free up cash for this. However, shortly I will be in possession of a new baby, the Epic X Monochrome... I am thinking about shooting my Thesis NYU film on it - no joke... I may be able to do something which is quite spectacular. I better because I has been doing this stuff for a bit...

I always wanna thank Jim, Jarred, Kris, Whitney!, Brent, & the rest of the technicians who work so hard delivering all of these incredible cameras to us. As well as Graeme.

I don't mean to get sentimental, maybe I do, but my life was cemented when I pressed record for the first time on my Epic M... I had played with other cameras... I didn't see that video look the Sony cameras give, nor the odd aberrations from Panasonic though they were a little better... RED went way beyond regular digital capture and at some point we will just call it film capture because that's what it is...

The Academy Awards Technical achievements PSSST! It's about time you look this was towards RED... So much invention, so much pushing the envelope, never sleeping, and always listening to the even the most snarky comments (which don't cross a line) in order to make the cameras better... Most of the time through free firmware... Other companies are trying to catch up, the race isn't even close in my opinion. New boundaries being broken is like quantum tunneling... It takes time, borrowed energy, but by the time you pass through that wall something unique and incredible will happen. REDONE - RED EPIC M & X - RED EPIC MONO - & soon RED EPIC DRAGON ... C'mon and all through upgrade paths... This company treats it's customers so well.

In any event - I have yet to chose a name, but I figure to wait just a little bit more... I will post picture as well, but in California right now so be patient.

Dragon comes out when it comes out ... My M-Dragon "Megatron" will be a beast and that's all I care about...

My Epic-X Monochrome (name still secret) is a beast and a half just like the MX sensor...

I have learned so much exploring digital tech, a lot of this credit deserves to go to my mentors and fellow shooters whom all offered advice when I was much younger.

I read an article from one of my favorite musicians, I wont name him because I don't agree with him. He said, and did I believe only want to view analog prints of films.

What I suggested in New York to Kodak (and my class @ NYU) back in 2009 was the following: restructure so that you can do a film print and squeeze out of film based capture because it's so expensive from A-->B-->C ... I am still relatively young so I understand the stubbornness some big companies and people have. Also, it's not my business to run, but where are we, Fuji is down... Kodak will make film to order in the future (they say) ... Viability as a place to store a digitally captured image was where my head was at... Now -- another boon in tech and we may have drives that will be better and safer than a film print for long term storage (it's just a matter of time).

What are we left with, well, how's it's projected... There is something that always seems better about something which is older, be is black and white films (which I freakin' love), Vinyl, Reel-To-Reel audio capture (Nagra),... But, things get better - so much so that I wager most of the films shot with RED DIGITAL CAPTURE, if colored-exposed-treated the right way, will look any way you want it to look.

There are purists out there, I get that... Hell, I shot my final project @TheVancouverFilmSchool of super-16 with Zeiss-Mark III super-speeds thanks to my instructor. I could do much better now, but what I learned from that experience served me well, and also informed me of what looks cinematic, at least to me.

I wont name other camera companies, but RED looks so cinematic to me, and if I had the money would I toy with a 35mm out print... Maybe, but probably not at this point.

I could get into way more technical stuff, which I did in an essay but I wont, these are some of the big decisions even large studios have to make. What is the best fit for you... I know the answer for me, and I am happy an incredible Canadian and an American got together to create something which will help me make sure my family and it's legacy stays safe.
