  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Paul Ellington - New York

I took the two day course @ LIGHTIRON NYC (it's free) and it is amazing. Michael Cioni has developed tech that makes life at the next level of filmmaking so much better for everyone. They remind me a bit of RED - together these two technology companies on set is a devastating force. He talked about the Outpost System and the LillyPad System and with the iPad w. Todailies (iTunes) or LivePlay (iTunes) now is a good time to start learning this tech. Much more info was given at the session so be sure to check it out if you can.

Hey I like to shoot, but I wanna learn about this stuff too, who says when I'm not shooting I couldn't be doing something in conjunction with another DP I admire.

A long journey in more ways than one to get to NAB... I had a ticket for NAB from last year. Then I find out halfway through March that I may or may not be getting 2 accolades in Vancouver, BC... I had to go but I wanted to keep my Vegas leg, so I had to transfer in Vegas and straight on. I get to spend a day and a half in Vancouver before heading off But I did receive 2nd Place Overall for "Twin Graves" out over a thousand screenplays. Hons for "Dating Alfie"... Which it turned out was also a very prestigious honor there... Walking back to a friends in the Vancouver rain I find out that "Dating Alfie" has made it into The Beverly Hills Film Festival... Then it was back to Vegas for NAB, with one good ear...

So many wonderful people from RED at the party tonight, thanks for saying hi Whitney! Tomorrow we will see what all this stuff means... Stuff I know, I wont repeat -- but it's nothing you couldn't find by reading the threads.

I leave you with these to photos to remind myself these tireless years honing both camera and the screenwriting craft could be put to good use.

All any of us want is happiness, and I'm getting closer. THANK YOU TO ALL OF REDTEAM for working countless hours.

Thanks Phil Holland for being awesome.

More tomorrow. Hope to see old and new friends there.

NAB • 2013

NAB • 2013

This has been great -- met many REDUsers who are amazing people from all over the world. I am sad I couldn't stay longer but I have an important PSA to get back to for NYU -- but that's another story for another day.

First thanks to Phil Holland for letting me crash, Festivals can get pretty crazy... Looks like I will be heading to The Beverly Hills Film Festival (somehow) as well.

Dragon is indeed here... We saw them built and tested (no footage yet).

16+ Stops of DR... A little more or less depending on how you view it... RED stated last night HDRX will stay. If it had gone I wouldn't have been too sad because I could have adjusted the shutter speed accordingly to pull the stills I wanted anyway. Keeping it allows for a separate track which is kinda nice.

It will be interesting to see how the unit performs on set with the new fan. I don't particularly care about the noise during standby but I am getting tired of explaining the tech to people.

Too many choppers in the city... Seriously... So many helicopters with cameras on them ( without people ). Look, the only way my camera would get on one of those is the following...

Option 1) Kill me put my Epic on an unmanned motorized chopper...

Option 2) Put me on a real chopper with a Tyler mount...

Thanks Whitney, Brent, Breanne, Caiti, Matt, Sean, Nate, Nick, Keegan, Ted, Brian, Jim & Jarred...

Sorry if I left anyone out but you know I love you all.

All For Kids.

All For Kids.

I was in all packed for Vegas when I got the news that our normal University allotment wouldn't be made available as usual. Anyone who knows me sees me bleed RED. And yet there I was with no support from my University, I was told just get it done. I did, and I did it by selling a PL mount. It killed me to do so. I asked for at least a soundstage be made available -- no such luck... Not the case for other students in my class.

I had to rent aluminum track which was great but expensive - the kids who shot in studio got track and a Fischer for free. I find myself angry for even complaining because what was important was that it got done, the commercial that is. What's upsetting is that with the extra money I could have done more for my Peace In The Congo campaign, but the powers that be ignored my emails altogether. One teacher responded, one.

The cause is a great one, which is really what made me upset, I'm passionate about the issue and about my filmmaking... it's not that I wasn't supported, but it was the fact that the spec ad I was creating spoke out about just this issue -- nobody caring, or taking action when it's in their power. Luckily it was within my power to complete this with the help of my team, but also with the loss of a mount which I cherished.

Classes for me end in May... I have a screenplay in The Beverly Hills Film Festival, and have done ok on the festival circuit, this is something I would think a University would be proud of, maybe even help support a project about the voiceless people in the Congo.

Some things you have a right to be mad about -- this one pissed me off. I am happy to say I believe the spot will still come off great.

Very cute candid of Baby X -- shot in near darkness on Epic MX T1.5These were the Rokinon's ... Slightly soft but I was at a T1.5 and it was dark ... Cute baby though.

Some other shots, still on Epic MX, where taken while DIT'ing... DITS don't get enough love on set - that's all I will say on the matter.

"DATING ALFIE" • Beverly Hills Film Festival 2013

"DATING ALFIE" • Beverly Hills Film Festival 2013

So my dear friend Rosely and I talked during my recovery over a summer from back surgery. I wanted to step away from Horror, Noir, pretty much anything dark - believe me going through a divorce and being one of the oldest people in an MFA program can get pretty dark. In any event, NYU has been great for me, and out of the pain during the hours in bed came "Dating Alfie" a romantic comedy, which happens to be about two women who fall in love.

It's received some love, now the latest place is The Beverly Hills Film Festival. I shoot a lot, there is a trailer I wish I could show but I'm not allowed to, however I will show my acceptance laurel from LA, and also throw up the we address to the listing.

www.beverlyhillsfilmfestival.com/gallery_2013_screen.php

It's magic when images enter the screen, but also when they enter your mind.

Happy this much lighter screenplay is getting some love, I might shoot this as my thesis film as a warm up to the much bigger task of doing the Duke Ellington bio-pic which is really a much bigger task in terms of how to deal with someone who did so much in his life-time -- and he was great, but not perfect... As someone said, that is a story for another time.

This is the acceptance for "Dating Alfie" in Cali ...
