These look fantastic Paul. Imagine what feel this would have if you had really old vintage glass. It'd definitely would have a 50's or 60's look that would fool everyone into thinking its shot on B/W film.

You're definitely putting the Monochrome to use where it belongs :)

Thanks Shervin -- yeah, it would be nice with an older zoom but, I am pretty blown away by what this machine can do. I mean, really, blown away!

Maybe see you in T DOT O this summer along with Bob...

I love both my Epic M & Monochrome ... It's curious some folks are asking to shoot and film on the Monochrome -- I can't blame them. It's got a real nice (as Phil said) buttery look to it -- and that was with the new Canon 70-200 USM II which, some folks deem too sharp but it's more the texture that surprised me... It shouldn't with RED but I do have a music video coming up which will be shot on MX and RED PRO PRIMES ... Now, I will be taking motion-stills on the Monochrome because it's a beast, and I may throw some Monochrome shots in the video itself... Either way it will be interesting to see how it all turns out.

Lastly, I am location scouting for my Thesis film -- I was going to take my M but I may take the Monochrome instead. Hmmm...

Thanks RED for being awesome -- this is one person who remembered at 14 not to question your Father, I know you have our best interests at heart and all I have to say is thank you.

In my opinion the greatest Tenor Sax player alive today.

Shelley Carrol ... And he's been like family since I can remember.

PS - Last one - I forgot to upload this shot before.

Ellington Update • 06.19.2013

Ellington Update • 06.19.2013

I am currently scouting for my thesis film for NYU. I am looking to film in Vancouver for a host of reasons, least of which is how beautiful this place is.

Before I left I shot a music video for a young Artist, Briannagh Dennehy ( here is a link to her in the studio, this is not something I shot - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=RUiDL7okxiA ).

Her single I shot is called "American Fab Kid", produced by Assal Ghawami. I DP'd the thing as well.

We had a great crew and made our day no problem.

I am up for another video for a band on a meteoric rise (just like Briannagh) but things aren't finalized yet so I will have to hold up posting photos or releasing any info about their single.

Here are a couple of shots from The Kin, who are on their way to Australia to perform with P!NK.

Best Paul.

PS - these were shot on the Epic Monochrome with available light at The Rockwood venue in NYC.

Hi Paul, I was wondering if you had any background on "Murder at the Vanities" which had some music done by Duke Ellington (I think he was one of the main actors too). I was reading some random french cinema article that referenced it, the movie seems to be clouded in a bit of mystery. This is for a bit of just random research I'm doing on pre-code Hollywood, and the transition to sound (especially the involvement of the Jazz scene, and how people were excluded as the transition occurred).

That is a large subject, and I can't sit and BS about it because I take film history very seriously. I am very familiar with pre-code but don't have any personal info on that particular movie. My Grandfather acted in a few films such as "Black & Tan Fantasy" "Cabin In The Sky" & of course my favorite "Anatomy Of A Murder"... I believe he is also one of the first musicians to be nominated for a Grammy and an Oscar for the same recording "Paris Blues".

I am delighted you are doing such research, and would love to see it when it's done!

My best to you and yours.

Awesome. I have always loved Cabin in the Sky, and Anatomy of a Murder...this list smacks of a certain crit studies program, at a certain LA-based film program. :)

Well - wrong coast, I attended NYU like my Father. Never took any critical studies courses as those are primarily MA/PHD in Cinema Studies. I would have been first in line for those classes though as I love the history or film, and anything related to it (film-stock, speeds, first developments in advanced cinema movement etc... One day when I am older and wiser I may return to study some more -- now it's time to put it work. It begins with the Thesis Film which I am planning right now.

Best!

Catching up

Catching up

Finally a couple of minutes to come up for Air ... It has been a wild ride the last couple of months since NYU ended for me. I still have to complete my thesis film but the good news is the script is ready (save for polish), and it has won a few over-all festivals, and been a finalist & Official Selection in a bunch of other. Most notably Phil Holland and myself were in the same fest (Beverly Hills Film Festival), he took home the overall cine prize -- and I went home losing to a very talented writer in Phil Schroeder.

In the meantime I shot three spots for Henley's E-Zigs, a music video for an amazing 10 year old singer, Briannagh Dennehy, and operated on a music video for Lightning Dust.

I will post some photos when I get a chance to post some images, but things have been fun and still can't believe how amazing the Epic looks and now with the professional images that Mark Toia shared with the Red community, I find myself sitting here saying, whoa I can't believe things got even better with the sensor and rig -- and I don't have to buy a brand new camera.

Thank you Team RED!

Thanks to Phil, Mark, Jim, my main man Jarred Land, Whitney, Kris, Matt, Sean, and the Amazing Graeme.

Peace & Love

- PE

MERRY CHRISTMAS • To a beautiful 2014

MERRY CHRISTMAS • To a beautiful 2014

Just wanted to take time out to thank RED, Phil, Mr. Collister, Jarred, Jim, Brent, Whitney, Jay, Bob, Gunleik & anyone I may have missed.

Have an incredible Christmas guys, and a fruitful,... That's a word right :) New Year.

Best as always.

- Paul.

Thanks Paul! The invitation to Toronto still stands even though many in Toronto, and the surrounding neighbourhoods have been without power for a few days already since the ice storm. Some may not have power until the weekend! We've been fortunate to have power through the whole ordeal. In any case, have a warm and safe Christmas!
