  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Paul Ellington - New York

Nope, but that sounds like a good move.
I could stay about a week, and I would enjoy contributing with whatever I can.
And I guess there are girls in New York, too...

Cute girls, we could plan something exotic loft style in Brooklyn, try to get Phill Holland out and do something for the sake of art. Or a real project if there is something. Sent you a PM with email and #.

NYC / AFTER THE "SAN'EASTER"

NYC / AFTER THE "SAN'EASTER"

NEW YORK CITY is cold wet and people are pissed off. I did get to meet some lovely people and possibly again in the morning, more to report later. But I did find a wonderful studio in the city with lots of space, and I must say I must have been the last person to visit. In any event, things here are still a little out of control, lots of people with water and no electricity. FEMA is doing its best but the loan thing (unsecured loans) to people affected ain't cutting it. If I could submit to any of my fellow REDUSERS, if you can donate a dollar each to the RED CROSS in New York. They will make sure people get the essentials; warm meal, blankets, and access to some heat. If you can't, then please if you already haven't spread the word.

There is an uplifting post coming in the next day or two. New Yorkers tend to be tough but some tough people still need love during hard times.

Jarred & DeBranne

Jarred & DeBranne

I got to see Jarred and Deb in NYC and it was a pleasure. Don't prod me for info because I didn't ask about anything I just wanted to say hello. Jarred was lovely enough as was Deb to share some of their trip with me, and Deb, Jarred's lovely wife, shared her artwork with me and it's simply amazing. If you are in New York make an appointment to check it out. http://tribecatrib.com/content/work-debranne-treu It's very beautiful and right up my alley. Jarred and Deb were quite busy and I am positive they made the most of their trip to NYC, though we could have provided better weather and power.

Take care, and fly safe.

Element Technica • Man-Handle

Element Technica • Man-Handle

The marriage of RED & ET with the Meizler is well known. They also make great accessories. Here is a picture of their new top-handle, the Man-Handle. It's raised which I like, also it has room built in for a 15mm rode in order to fit some kind of EVF Bomb mount. Brilliant. The extra height makes hand-held easier and also is a great grip for doggy-cam (low-angle hand-held).

Almost done with the school, a few more months left. Writing loads of letters and would kill to do a music video or 10. I have contacted a few bands I love and got an email back on Thanksgiving night -- not bad considering the email was sent a couple of hours earlier.

Nevertheless, there is work to be done, and if it means going to see a bunch of shows and talking to management in person that is what I will do. I am very, very good at what I do. Ad to that the 36 screenplay awards and counting with 4 Festival wins, in my opinion I could help ad a lot to a music video. The best part is -- the first few, I just wanna do for cost to make my point.

But like always -- "... It's hard out here for a Pimp ... "

I am also 34, agism, is it a factor, maybe. My last name at times annoys people, should I change it. These are the things that o through my head.

This is not facebook, but the gigs I see through school, are still biased but it's changing very quickly.

We now have 4 Epics at NYU ... Dope -- so guess what, the writing is on the wall. Deny it as long as you want. I live for my mother, she passed away from MS -- her nickname was RED and that's how I live my life.

TG Screenplay win • Work-Flow notes.

TG Screenplay win • Work-Flow notes.

Reporting a few things, my second year film "Twin Graves" won best screenplay at The Nevada International Film Festival.

Film, is colored (OFFHOLLYNY \m/ on), waiting for titles, I was talking to Phil Holland about how valuable post experience is in this field.

Help shoot a little film for a friend as a 1st, man, that RED PRO PRIME 300 is so badass.

USB3 MBPR 128 full card dump, about 14mins, with two maybe 25mins if dumping two at the same time.

More news to come in the future, feel free to ask any questions.

Music Videos

Music Videos

It's no secret amongst my friends I have been dying to do a music video. I may get that chance with a band I love. I wont mention their name because I might not get it, but then again, I might. I am up to the task and have a strong concept for the video, now it's using my two hats ... DP & Writer/Director ... Videos are a different beast and this should be high concept, tell a story, and last but not least whip some message at the people watching the video.

It's fine to do the medium, mcu, cu, ecu, wide etc ... but story is just as important which is what I am constructing right now while at the same time applying for an MA @ NYU. Good thing I can write a little.

When all is said and done, I may shoot my feature thesis in Copenhagen, Denmark next summer (unless the music video is pushed back that far, and of course if I get it).

All shot on RED, with the R90 and perhaps some of the new gadgets coming from RED I am excited to be moving forward with my rigs on these shoots.

Most of the time when something goes wrong, and I help trouble shoot quite a bit of RED tech (now probably more used at NYU than Alexa), it's the user - as I call it operator error - "... to thine own self be true ... " my Dean said, I say to thine camera be true and know it like you know your body, it's and extension of your body -- your eyes.

RED LIFE 2012-->2013

RED LIFE 2012-->2013

Another Production @ NYU (2 actually) are shooting RED tomorrow thanks to your's truly. I am on one set and it's being filmed in Harlem. French Filmmaker Vladimir De Fontenay is the Director and I will lend my kit and manage Data & help trouble-shoot should they need it.

I wrote a screenplay which I registered (as I always do with my screenplays) with the WGA called "Music Is My Mistress" about my Grandfather's life after my Father comes of age, and Billy Strayhorn enters Duke Ellington's life. Sent the first act to an HBO Exec who left after 30 years to start his own company and he said he was jazzed about my presentation and that I was a "Solid" writer.

They (The Producers) will do their best to vie for me as the Director on the film (Paperwork this coming week) regardless.

Also, if Jim and Jarred will allow it, "Music Is My Mistress" will be shot on RED (Dragon), and finished in 4K - Granddad wouldn't have had anything less than the best! Duke embraced new methods of writing, and rhythms; RED has shaken the industry up and that makes the choice so easy for me - Ellington will be shot on RED DIGITAL CINEMA.

The images used to create "Music Is My Mistress" via text is directly related to shooting RED EPIC, playing with frames, and of course reading, but RED has been such an inspiration for me -- it, JIM & JARRED'S camera is my MUSE ... Nothing seems impossible anymore.

I am applying for an MA @ NYU in Cinema Studies as well, we will see if I get in with so many talented people around the globe applying.

If anyone has any issues with this say hello to my little Danish Friend ... And take a look @ My Grandfather's Post-Hom Citation... Maybe I will save that shot for later just to leave something on the field.

I want to thank Peter Lyons Collister, ASC, David Klein, ASC, Jarred Land, Jim Jannard, Brent, Graeme, Whitney, The Bomb Squad ... Thanks for supporting me, I hope I make you all proud.

DIT • Listen To Their Requests

DIT • Listen To Their Requests

New-found respect for the DIT position. I did this for a few friends as a favor, one was great, the other was a good shoot and all went well, but none of my requests were listened too. This is the kind of thing that makes you stop helping out and teaching people who to use the rig, handle data, cards, lenses, etc ... Love the Director, hated the way my gear and I were treated. All of it came back in one piece even the simplest requests went un-answered, and a ride home was not offered on either day.

Treat your DIT's right, I had a union guy in Dallas tell the Director and Producer I was worth my weight in gold - and I was DP'ing that gig. People don't know what they have until it's gone - shame.

Up and onwards.

Very cool Paul, congrats!

Thanks Ketch, hope all is going well with everything ... You stay busy my friend ... Just wrapping up this last week before my last semester of classes ... There may be more to come, but my next level of expertise would allow me to have more free time to work on camera craft, while still writing ... Merry Christmas Ketch. Happy Holidays to everyone else.

It would occur to me that what the RED Epic and Scarlet cameras are now, will only be enhanced by what comes next. I know nothing anyone else doesn't know but I can see a few things pretty clearly. Some of the most advance computerized lens mounts in existance are on both the Scarlet and Epic. The path of a potential RED-MOTE pro, or drive by iPad or Galaxy Note wouldn't be that far off. The time of having a bunch of extra stuff on your camera such as cables etc will come to an end. I a still amazed at the first firmware let alone the latest version. We have seen since I bought my M, XD-Cam mini, F3, F65, F5, Alexa+ with microwave oven and oversized pixels, and yet the Epic and Scarlet still stand strong. You didn't have to sell you rig at a loss and will soon be able to upgrade to a sensor unrivaled - and if someone comes close, it will be a lot more expensive, baked in colors more than likely, and so far Sony saying they are upgradeable only counts within one camera - not model to model ... They have been left in the dust as far as I'm concerned. Change isn't cheap, R & D isn't cheap, but I stand by my purchase and doubled down more than once and I am happy I did. I am so excited for the future, and NAB. I just hope what I saved for Dragon will be enough, and if it isn't I will wait patiently. One thing I learned is this from my last few years, if you have RED's back, they will have yours.

See you at NAB maniacs.

Love you.
