  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Official NAB announcements...

If I knew that the Red Dragon upgrade for an Epic-X would offer installing a FF35 senor, I would skip the Epic-S all together.

As one of many upgrade options I'm sure, I think without speculating that this is just common sense... ;)

Come on man. Seriously? Predicting the future based solely on the "name" of a sensor? Hehe. I guess that's a bit of a stretch for me....

Joseph,

RED doesn't need to fight for more resolution (or maybe is still in a need to get more pixels for appropriate number of RGB colors according to Bayer...),

but all that means promptly RED would need first improved lowlight capability sensor then the battle for right RGB color numbers is the last one in the line...

Just have a look at the competition...right now you are at NAB...

Originally RED plan to give an option for Monstro upgrade and that's what i wanted originally in the first place. But plan change and they offer EPIC-X first and Monstro comes later.

Anyway...Monstro is great ! Full Frame - full quality R3D, it kicks in every possible way. The newly announce highspeed 120fps arri alexa, which only allow you to record to quicktime and RAW recording, it's really puts it behind RED in terms of technology achievement.

For "well under" 10k. I agree. This is huge news.

Marry this with a 4K Laser Projection, and I am sure that you will have a great way to view dailies, all your RED footage at full 4K, with the possibility of doing a nice grade, then package to DCP for full distribution - now this is SICK!

What is amazing? What you are so glad? That we will get Epic-X and Epic-S only in 2012? (it is would be good if in the begining and not in the end).
The problem is a problem. The main thing is clearification and not uncertainty!
So supply chain is the only problem to release Epic-X and Epic-S?
I meaen even 4,5,6 month and you will find the way out about supply chain it is not big delay it is ok! We are waiting 2-3 years 6-9 month delay is not a big problem! Or may be there ia something else? Something about changing in specificationg of Epic-X and Epic-S?
And Dragon? We are talking about release Epic-X and Epic-S with MX-sensor and only then in somewhen in 2012 these shipped Epic-X and Epic-S will be upgrade from MX-sensor to Dragon Sensor? We don't need to wait that you are going to change spec and put Dragon to all Epic-X and Epic-S?

What is amazing is that Red will offer a hardware upgrade. Nobody else even thinks of that. Clarification : the supply of parts has been destroyed just as mass production was about to begin. No one knows how long it will take to fix. What a complete bummer for Jim and Red. Get some perspective and stop whining!

Rarely chime in but this is getting old....

I've said it before: fanboys of any sort (cameras, cars, sports teams) drive me crazy.

But look at the facts here: the "other" camera manufacturer charges for firmware upgrades (anamorphic and 120fps are two separate upcharges), they have stated that the chip in their camera cannot be upgraded, and there is no idea of lead time on product (this was the case even BEFORE Japan).

RED, on the other hand, constantly upgrades firmware for free (including new features), designed a new camera body with plans for chip upgrades, and is doing what they can to get as many Epic Ms out there.

RED has my vote...

RedRay Pro for under 10K...This is SICK!

I don't know why people aren't more jacked about this.

Bring it on...ready when you are, need RED Ray before November. if humanly possible...

Excited for what is coming...when it comes and RED Dragon is also on my list...

Thank you very much for the announcements Jim.

Although technically announced prior to NAB seeing the ustream of all the mounts and accessories demonstrated by Matt were insanely well thought out and designed. Totally stoked about them. Can I ask though. Is there any chance rather than just having a section where all the bit are displayed at a price that someone could do a small video detailing all the parts (closer to shipping). There are so many configurations and possibilities I would like to make an informed choice on how many of each parts to buy for a multiple configurations. Or anybody else who finds the time...

4K (home) projector that is something I wasn't expecting at all. I take it that it will be able to double as a grading projector as well?

Thanks again for an official announcement. I understand the Red Dragon aspect a bit better now. I was confused by the Monstro/RDrag thing.

Looking forward to seeing the film if we can and seeing the ipad app.

Sweet!!

Not just dailies... It will be a great way to watch finished films

4. We are working on a home 4K laser projector.

Note that he says HOME. This tells me the pricing will be reasonable. I can't wait to hear more about it...

I still say BRAVO to the Red Team. Thanks for the official updates. You continue to be groundbreaking. Don't stop, please. Yes, the Dragon sensor itself is incredible news. I'd love to be a fly on the wall to see the reaction of a Sony rep if I called and said, Umm, I'm interested in swapping out the sensor and deck on my old Beta Cam for newer cine alta technology.

I can not imagine the heart stopping, frustration they must be going through. Having a full blown production facility ready to rock and wham, getting hit with the Japan effect. I think it speaks volumes that they still take the humanitarian stance and remind us that there's more going on in the world than electronic components. So many people on these boards just say...I don't care, I want it and I want it NOW! Well who doesn't?

How depressing it must feel for the Red Team. They open up a major vein of communication and many users just give back static. Who would blame them for slamming the R&D door? People keep crying about missed delivery dates? No problem, Red just won't give estimations anymore. C'mon forum members. You cry about missed dates, new features etc. You're so used to being hand-fed announcements that you're disappointed about major news? Really. What's next? Are you going to start complaining because you can't get a Dragon sensor in a fixed Scarlet? Not to mention Red gives opportunities if you gotta have a camera now, but nooo. Forum members that are crying want Epic tech for five grand. Jeesh!

Red, thank you for keeping the children informed, good news or bad. Please keep up the incredible work. I think it's safe to say that most of us know you're team is fully dedicated and working as hard as possible.

Thanks for the news. Great to be in Vegas as see all the new toys, the cameras shooting the tattoos, the new RED short film (why not make the rest of it and release it in the cinemas) that would be cool, what a great cast, sets etc...it reminded me of "Blade Runner" mixed with "DeadWood"...any way, thanks for everything.
And please don't stop giving us updates...even if it is like " we got one more of the missing parts, and now we are down to 17 missing parts...."

Red deserves a decent break. Japan has had global effects on supply chains for many manufacturers. Hopefully the supply issue will ease in the coming months.
I don't know how Red's Japan suppliers are specifically affected, but all is not complete doom and gloom in Japan. There are many manufacturing facilities that are pretty much intact but waiting for restoration of utilities to reopen. Some may not come back at all though.
Keep the Japanese in your prayers and give a bit to the disaster relief funds if you can. They still need it.

For those of you who are curious about the impact on the Japanese Tsunami on RED, this web site, although automotive related, might give you an idea of how things play out. In the case of cars, there is one company and one plant that makes most automotive computers for several companies, and the lack of that one part is halting/slowing production of all cars.

I'm sure something very similar is hitting RED.

You guys are awesome. It will be well worth the wait. It has been fun chatting with the Red team this week at NAB.
